The 25th ranked Coyotes (24th in coaches poll) take on NAIA Northwestern Oklahoma State in the home opener Saturday. The Rangers are 0-1, having lost their season opener 55-13 to D-II Colorado State - Pueblo.
I was just at coaches corner tonight at Callaway's in Sioux Falls. Ed was there along with several coaches and players. There was great electricity in the room, with at least a couple of hundred people in attendance. The main topic of the night, of course, was a recap of the Minnesota game. I felt the same goose bumps tonight that I felt all weekend. Wow. Just wow.
Anyway, not much was discussed concerning our next opponent. Ed mentioned the fact that his staff has been reviewing film for the last couple of days, but that he's been doing non-stop media interviews concerning the Minnesota game. I think this game is ideal for USD. While the coaches can talk all day about doing what it takes to avoid a hangover, college kids are college kids. Hopefully we can have a clean home opener and head into the NDSU game week completely focused.
I also hope USD supporters fill the Dome Saturday. Not the sexiest of opponents, but I bet there were lots of Minnesota fans thinking the same thing about us. And the Coyotes definitely deserve a big crowd!

I had always planned to go to the game this saturday eventhough I could have easily just skipped it. With the win in Minnesota I feel I owe the program my attendance for what they gave me as a fan on Saturday.

Is there a chance the Yotes could get caught looking past this game and get stung?
The character of this team at the end of the season last year and the beginning of this year tells me they'll be ready.
..but...what do you think?

No chance. NW Okie State was hammered this year by D2 Colorado-Pueblo. Talent wise I think the Coyotes literally just need to show up. The coaches, however, will not let that happen. I guarantee they are all over the players this week, not letting them mentally slack off. Physically, I'm sure practices were a bit softer this week so we can recover. This game is most likely going to be used as another chance to tweek the machine for next week's game in Fargo.

I heard Coach Ed on the radio yesterday and he said the guys had Monday off and they were supposed to get all the handshakes and pats on the back that they could as they deserved them but...starting Tues. they needed to be ready to prepare for Sat. game

Anybody know what type of offense or defense NW Okie runs? Also, who else here thinks the Yotes will be establishing their power running game this Saturday? Watching that Minny game and how our offense was so wide open, many of you can remember back to the D2 days and our power running game and how much it has changed. Nice to be flexible but I'd like to see us get that punch-you-in-the-face swagger back.

I don't care what USD end up doing in the game vs NW Oklahoma as long as they have a reasonable performance. I am just gonna be looking forward to when they make their initial entrance onto the field.
It would probably be my preference to see alot of running as well. I would also like to see the defense get things going. They haven't done alot of stopping this year but granted they have also been up against two very good teams.
I think the timing of this game is very good. I don't think anyone would blame the team if they were just a tad flat so at least it's not a big game. That may have been done by design when doing the scheduling. More than likely it just happened to be where the buyin game ended up falling.

I think that USD comes ready to play and puts together a dominant showing.
69-0
The defense will be relentless and the #2s and #3s on offense are going to really finish the game big.

Big victory as expected. Hard to follow up the emotion of the first two weeks for the team. The did what they needed to do to control the game. Obviously need to tighten some things up for the next game and the remainder of the season. From here all games could go either way - will be fun to watch. Missed extra point and blocked fg during the game- that is still an issue and shouldn't be. Good to see the number of students at the game. Most I can remember in a non- D Days game. 8700 official attendance reported by USD. Hard to tell on what the actual number would be. Either way, good start. Seemed like there was a lot of audio problems during the game. On to Fargo. For those not going to the game up there - the local NBC station in Fargo is televising the game. I remember a few years back KDLT of Sioux Falls picked up the feed from them and televised it in SD when SDSU played them. If they get enough interest from people emailing them, perhaps they will do the same for the USD game. to email them: www.kdlt.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=24&Itemid=71

It was just great watching the Yotes runout of the tunnel to take the field. If there was one suggestion I would have liked to see some of the highlights from the Minnesota game on the big screen or at least incorporated into the Yotes intro video.
I was impressed with Northwest Oklahoma State. They don't have much size but have quite a few quick guys and it showed during instances of the game. Even at the NAIA level the Southern Speed is apparent. When USD got up 20-7 I was thinking to myself that the reason USD was ahead to that point is because they came out ready to play. If they would have come out flat I think the game could have very well been a different story much longer into the game. the Rangers had the talent to hang for awhile but the Yotes just simply wouldn't allow it. Despite the big win in Minnesota I saw a Coyotes team really ready to play. Meierkort and staff deserve alot of credit for getting the guys ready for this one. When Ed said that the Rangers had a few guys that could play for the Yotes he was right on track. #1 for them returned a first quarter kickoff for a touchdown and he wasn't even close to being caught. Once he had the seam it was history on that return.
The Students did show and that was good. They cheered quite a bit and they will all be needed at full force for the remainder of the schedule.
On a side note I was able to go into the Coyote Student Center for the first time since it was open and that is one nice facility. Alot of open window space for the students to sit down enjoy a lunch and just stare out the windows. The campus is getting a very nice makeover and down the road athletics will definately get their turn.
The buzz in Vermillion about the Yotes is obviously at an all time high. To get nearly 9,000 for what many would consider a mismatch game was great. There is no reason USD shouldn't be able to get 10,000 + for games in the very near future.
Outside the dome I noticed a new parking area just south of the tailgate area. I have a feeling that will eventually also be used for extra parking for basketball games once an new arena is built. I imagine a new arena will go in the grassy area between the new lot and the large current Dakotadome lot.
A very exciting day in Vermillion on Saturday and the meat of the schedule hasn't even gotten going yet. This is going to be one fun year for athletics at USD.

Just a couple of more notes. Right now the running game concerns me a bit. It took until the second half to really start getting big chunks on the ground. NW OK St did a good job of shutting us down on the ground while the game was still in doubt. They did much better than I expected. USD is making their hay in the passing game no doubt. I just hope against the tough FCS competition that the Yotes can run it effectively to keep defenses honest. Right now if I am game planning against the Yotes I am much more concerned about the passing game and Dante running himself more than anything else.
The defense to me is still unproven but we will find out alot about them in the next few weeks. I think it's apparent that the D-Line is very young and raw. Not much pressure on the quarterback and that is an NAIA (not real large) line protecting him.
The D is young and that is very much a factor but Chuck Morrell is going to be tested as a D Coordinator right out of the gate. The Yotes will need to be well schemed this year, at least until the guys get more PT. Special team also needs to tighten up a bit and hopefully the kicker will be able to kick the ball deep on kickoff a bit more often. There have been too many kicks only reaching the 15-20 yard line this year.
USD is a good football team but there are some issues that if not improved could end up kicking us in the butt. If the Yotes get some of the little things straightened out this team no doubt has the ability to be a top 10-15 FCS team.

I can't agree with you more on getting the running game going coyotefan. The first two games I just thought since they were FBS teams, they were a little tougher run defense. Then yesterday they stuggled to run the ball until our offensive line wore down their much smaller defensive line. You are right, the only time we had success so far running is with Warren. They need to get this figured out before heading up north.

This team is coming up to Sioux Falls and playing USF in the first round of the NAIA playoffs. They have won 8 straight since playing USD.

I'd laugh if they beat USF. Doubt they will, but it would be funny.
I work with a lady who has a senior on Morningside's roster. They want so bad to beat USF, I hope they get their chance and do win.
