With Softball season beginning, I think it's time to bring this up....why don't we have baseball?

My years at USD don't go back far enough to know for sure, but I believe there were a lot of politics involved. Title IX was one excuse I had heard, but I don't know about that. I remember my freshman year back in 09/10 we had a club team, and they were playing teams like Kansas State, but that was probably their last season. Prentis Park doesn't deserve to host a D-1 team anyways, not in its current state.
Personally, I have to question if universities this far north should even bother with a baseball team. The season starts in early February, and by the time that it's late enough into the year that good weather is assured the season is over. Look at our softball team, we only host three opponents. There are large universities out there that decide not to field a team, Wisconsin, Iowa State, UCLA, and Syracuse all don't have teams.

Agreed. I love baseball but the climate here is not conducive to fielding a team that can compete with southern schools. We should focus on the northern sports like hockey. ...or maybe even wrestling.

Forget wrestling and hockey, they will never happen and neither will baseball.

I'm a huge baseball fan, but I get so tired of this argument. USD is not bringing back baseball. Not in my lifetime, though I'm not exactly the youngest guy out there. USD isnt about to undertake a project like that, where it'd have to build from scratch. Nope.

Title IX was not the real reason it was removed. Most of the team was academically ineligible under Coach Itchy Scratchy. They caused more fights and problems on campus than the football team did back then. If I remember right some smart guys turned a car over at a party. Itchy Scratchy brought in a bunch of recruits that were as bad or worse than Ed's problem children. Was not a good time publicly for USD baseball at that time. Rather than face some of the public issues Title IX was an easy way to get rid of it. At least this is what I was told several years ago. Baseball had maybe one or two scholarships split among several guys. A bad bad hire as a coach is what ended that run of USD baseball. But given the cost of bringing it back - not ever going to happen. Also there are way more female students than men students at USD right now so adding a guys sport is next to impossible. If high school seniors knew that USD is like 60%+ female right now I bet more would go to USD.

They should start capping enrollment for females at the U. The underserved minority on this campus is male students. The admissions office really needs to get on the stick about getting more guys to enroll here. I believe the female enrollment rate is over 60% now, I heard in recent years it was dang near 65%.

Well, to be fair, more women attend college than men. 58% of all U.S. college students are female, and USD happens to be above the national average, but probably not by as much as you would think. I don't know exactly how Title IX works, but it sounds like it could use some reform.

I had no problem with more women attending USD then men when I attended. I don't think any man would be concerned with that.

Found this old article. Public reason. But I maintain behind closed door reason was on and off field problems of players and coach. And academic issues. www.goyotes.com/genrel/040604aaa.html

Not too long ago I heard from someone directly involved that the program was a "cancer", that the program was out of control, and when the budget tightened it was a pretty easy decision on where some room could be made. Title IX may have played a part in the cutting of the program, but if they were a clean program then they may still be around.

There were numerious off the field issues with both coaches and players. I know an assistant coach who was accused of stealing from the legion team when he was coaching them during the summer.
