Read the thread and have a few thoughts, observations.
-James is playing with Boots players. While James may have been heavily involved in the recruitment of these kids the bottom line is Coach Boots had the final say as to who got the scholarships and who didn't. Hence, we see a guard heavy roster.
-Given the first point, it might just be that James is doing one heck of a job with the roster he has in keeping games as close they have been. He may truly be a wonderful coach who is getting a lot out of what he has to work with. Now, I'm not saying this team doesn't have talent, it certainly does, just the make-up of the team may leave the coach handicapped with what he can do.
Give James the head job or move on to another coach? That's a very tough call. One thing is certain and that the AD and Coach are both feeling the pressure and both understand the reality of the situation. A couple of wins last week against the State schools and this subject might have been put to rest. If only the players could have executed on a couple of possessions and we might be having a thread about our new permanent head coach.
If you agree with the last two sentences then you have to ask yourself whether we are buying the coach or buying the results? The coach is the same coach, the outcomes may have been different if not for a few inches here or there.

This is the problem. It's hard to fire Joey because he's Joey. Great guy, I love the guy myself. But if we were asked to assess the situation, and the Coaches name was Joe Blow at Mid Tech University, would you start a search or not.
Regarding the Craig Smith idea, that is exactly the kind of coach that's out there ready to take this job. I don't know him but his profile is exactly what I was talking about. There are several dozen big time schools that have these types of guys ready to go. And with their connections, and things they do to schedule up is exactly what I was referring to.
I have a question I do t know the answer to. How many freshman do we have on roster and why don't any play? Every school has freshman that play. That scares me about tomorrow.

I have a question I do t know the answer to. How many freshman do we have on roster and why don't any play? Every school has freshman that play. That scares me about tomorrow. We have four sitting on the bench, all redshirting. Two guards, a forward, and a center. I can not say whether they are sitting because they aren't good enough, or if there is just that much talent ahead of them. I looked up their profiles and can only say I recognize one of them. Would Boots have done any better with these guys? Is that even a good benchmark? Joey is trying to bring change to the team, finally playing some man defense. I think that our best-case scenario would be bringing in D-1 talent at HC, while keeping Joey on as an assistant (though that may not be a possibility). He may not be ready to be a head coach, but he is certainly an asset that may be ready five years down the road. If no attractive candidates come up, it seems easy enough to give Joey a couple years to show what he's got.

I know That Sparks and Thomson the coaching staff is very high on and were debating playing them. The question is do you play them a few minutes a game or do you red shirt to keep a year of eligibility. At this level were you don't get superstars you win with experience with lots of upperclass 5th year srs. Just look at NDSUs team this year and the year they went to the tourney.

We should be thinking objectively. What D1 program would have hired Joey James to be the coach of their program at the time USD named him interim coach. Zero programs is the answer. James simply doesn't have the resume to be a D1 head coach. I don't want USD to continually be the place that coaches learn. They should learn elsewhere and then come here when they are seasoned. Joey should take a D2 job, prove to be successful and then move to D1. That would be the natural progression. We already have one example on the football program of Beschorner learning on the job instead of getting his seasoning elsewhere. Boot's wasn't really showing an ability to be a true contender in the Summit and with the recent trend as well as many road games ahead James is just not doing enough to keep the job in my opinion. USD with an unbiased national search would be able to get a coach with a much stronger resume than what James currently has. It's impossible to tell exactly how much of this year is on James and how much of this year is acquired from Boots.

Not the first time I've heard the name Craig Smith with this situation.

Why would we be surprised he is the only other Center on the roster besides Gruis?

Why would we be surprised he is the only other Center on the roster besides Gruis? There is no certainty that he's a starter next year just because he figures to be the only guy labelled as a Center. It's not like Gruis has been playing 40 minutes a game just because he is the only Center. I assume Flack and Robertson will be the 4-5 guys next year, but for all I know Keita is ready to jump right into the starting lineup.

Based on his video highlights, he appears very athletic but not necessarily a post player. As I understand it, he had some type of injury in the fall and had surgery. Does anyone know if he is now healthy and participating in practices?
