I've heard the same thing. I also heard it was like that on the football side, USD wanting to schedule UND. Finally got something done there though.

Maybe with a former UND assistant now on staff we can get something accomplished?

Reports from the ground suggest SDSU season-ticket holders are steadily buying up pre-sale tickets for their Pentagon game against FGCU. I would expect a report in the coming days that the game has sold out. Last I heard, only 1,000 tickets or so have been sold for the USD vs. UNLV game at the Pentagon. It's a frustrating reality that underscores the importance of creating a winning culture. Frankly, we're lucky to have the extra boost of a more prominent opponent. UNLV is a household name and a solid program; there's no reason we shouldn't be well over 2,000 tickets sold. If it weren't for FGCU's NCAA run a couple of years back, we'd all be saying "who?"

I would add that this is not some throw away comment about fan apathy. The people running these facilities pay attention to ticket sales. If our fan base can't develop into a dependable revenue source, we'll be left in the cold as the Sioux Falls sports market becomes even more sophisticated.

Everyone is aware of where the program's current perception is, there is no reason for anyone but the big fans to be excited about Coyote MBB in its current state. Our culture will be changing though, we have an absolute winner in Craig Smith. I guarantee he'll have us in the tourney within five years, and with a brand new facility the buzz around the program will dwarf what we're seeing now. I do agree that we are at a pivotal point, but we have exactly who we need to steer the ship right now.

It has been my contention for quite some time that although our program has boosters willing to "pony up", that our program wasn't going anywhere unless the overall fan base increased in numbers and the level of enthusiasm for Coyote sports increased at a fairly high rate. I bleed Coyote Red, make absolutely no doubt about it, but when I read and hear that as of right now we have maybe sold 1000 tickets to a game against UNLV in Sioux Falls I am concerned about two things.
First, the Sioux Falls fan base in general. To those of you on here from SF, it obviously doesn't include you. But I have yet to see the alumni and fans there get excited about Coyote sports in general. We wasted a football game there in an attempt to rally them around the move to D-1, and now it appears as if we may do the same for the basketball game. When they announced the game, and the dates of the ticket sales, I got excited as hell, and immediately put my order in. Why on Gods green earth don't the people of SF get the same?
The second thing I'm concerned about is if this lethargic attitude continues, the boosters that pledged a lot of their own hard earned money, are they going to honor their pledge if the new arena has 1200 or less in it for a game? No one wants to bet thousands, ten thousands, one hundred thousands, or even millions on a horse that can't even get out of the chute.
Something has to be done to address this problem, and start now. I'm not sure what the answer is, but you can bet your bottom dollar that we have to try something. More visibility of our coaches, administration, or athletes? Someone has to sell this program soon, or soon it won't be bought. Not to be a Debbie Downer here, but the problem is real. Everyone always says just build a winner and they'll come. Really? Of course we want to win, but in my opinion, in order to attract the athletes we want to bring on and compete, you are going to need an excited and amped up fan base. Who wants to play in a gym 20% full that sits on their hands?
In closing what I'm asking this board to respond to is what do you think needs to happen to pump up our fan base? It blows my mind when on football Saturday there isn't hardly anyone there because it's pheasant opener. I'm sorry, but I don't get that. What needs to be done?

Hopefully, this hire has the ability, and the administrative support, to begin making some positive changes: VERMILLION, S.D.--University of South Dakota has tabbed Northwestern University's Joe Thuente as its new director of marketing and promotions. Thuente will begin at USD on Aug. 12. "It is a privilege to be joining the team at USD," said Thuente. "This is an exciting time to be a Coyote and I think we are poised for big things moving forward. I can't wait to get started." A native of Johnston, Iowa, Thuente (pronounced TEN-tee) earned a degree in business management from University of Northern Iowa in 2009 and received his master's in intercollegiate athletics leadership from University of Washington the following year. He began his professional career as a marketing intern at Northwestern in early 2010 and was hired full-time as a marketing assistant that summer. He was promoted to assistant director of marketing in 2011 and has served in that role since. “Joe’s experiences are exactly what we need to move us forward,” said USD Director of Athletics David Herbster. “He has that soup to nuts knowledge of not only in-game promotions and fan engagement, but also of developing a comprehensive marketing plan. That knowledge will keep us moving in the right direction.” At Northwestern, Thuente is responsible for marketing, promotions and event management for volleyball, women's basketball, wrestling, softball and field hockey. In prior years, he served baseball and lacrosse. He recently set program records for single-game and season-long attendance and revenue in volleyball, wrestling and baseball. He's overseen all video board and scoreboard elements for men's basketball and oversaw Wildcat Alley - a fan tailgating area before football games. At USD, Thuente will annually develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and promotions plan to maximize ticket revenue and spectator attendance for Missouri Valley (FCS) football and NCAA Division I Summit League basketball as well as 14 other Division I sports. He will also oversee game-day marketing and promotional activities for Coyote athletics.
