Some good chat about USD on the live chat at the P&D today more especially the Women's Basketball team. There was some talk about Seekamp and how the Yotes would have fared without her this year and in the future. My opinion is that the Coyotes would have been obviously worse off without her but ya never know who would have stepped into her shoes to fill her spot and how good that player would have been. It certainly would have been filled by a scholarship player. I believe the Coyotes would have probably finished 2nd without her. They had a pretty big gap between themselves and the teams tied for 3rd. Not to take anything at all away from Nicole as she was obviously a very valuable player but I see a theme here. How will the Coyotes replace Mandy Koupal? How will the Coyotes replace Amber Hegge? To a bit lesser extent how will the Coyotes replace the Hoffman twins? Now how will the Coyotes replace Nicole Seekamp? There will be another player in the next 2 or 3 years that we will say the same thing about and on and on in years to come.
Next year the Coyotes will still have some very nice players coming back in Hemiler, Stewart, Arens, McCloud, Liveringhouse and Hoff. That is a nice nucleus to build around. From the current roster they will be adding Duffy and 6'4" Abigail Fogg just to name a couple of newcomers that didn't play last year. That is 8 players that should see substancial playing time and that is not even considering Jaylah Jackson who saw limited minutes. That is 9 deep without even considering the players that are coming in that are not currently on the roster. Duffy can somewhat make up for the loss of Seekamp and Fogg can somewhat make up for the loss of Loffler.
Pure scoring may take a dip in what the departing seniors brought to the table. The scoring will need to be spread around and certain players will need to take more of a scoring role on the team. Hemiler may need to look for her shot more and Stewart will need to keep improving from the wing. The inside play shouldn't take a dip and if anything with the length of Fog the Coyotes interior defense should be improved. The front court will need to share the burden in scoring next year as well. In the off season the focus needs to keep being on defense. I would give up a little bit of scoring for a little bit more on the D end. Maybe that will be the reality next year at least lets hope so.
Based on their injuries mid season and how they finished out this season SDSU is probably the pre season favorite but are you really going to put another team over the Yotes other than the Jacks. I can't think of any. Western Illinois loses Ashley Luke and I believe Oral Roberts loses McIntyre. Those are huge loses for teams looking to overtake the South Dakota teams.
I am not predicting much of a fall for the Yotes if a fall at all. There is still going to be alot of depth and the players coming back will improve during the off season.
