Here are today's RPI rankings for the Summit League Women
USD 99 SDSU 131 IUPUI 143 Western Illinois 231 Oral Roberts 245 IPFW 266 Omaha 285 Denver 310 NDSU 344 - Wow have they slipped
Overall other than the top 3 not very good for the league in general.
In the Women's mid major rankings SDSU is #13 and no other team is ranked or even receiving votes. Those ranked and receiving votes adds up to 48 teams and the Coyotes are not even mentioned. I can guarantee the Coyotes are in the top 48 and probably in the top 25. The USD program is not very respected nationally as of yet. I wonder if a win over Washington would change that in the next poll.

Also, just an FYI, that poll is pretty much a joke. No one who votes does the due dilligence it takes to rank 25 teams. It seems to be mostly based on name recognition, prior polls, and prior year(s) success. Example: USD beats Drake last week and goes from receiving votes to not receiving a single vote and I think Drake fell 5 spots. Great Poll though

SDSU had a great win this week. Will certainly help the Summit League attract a higher seed in the NCAA Tourney and is another step towards a two-bid league (really only a possibility this year if SDSU nearly wins out and then loses in Sioux Falls, since USD lost to Washington and had a bad start to the season).

Just wanted to point out that the RPI is not really a poll at all. It is a calculated ranking based on wins/losses relative to strength of schedule. While you can certainly debate the merits of the way they calculate the score, realize that there is literally zero human element to the poll. No opinions. No voting. Early season rankings can be a lot less accurate than late season ones, since there is less data to go by. Other than that, it is considered a good tool to help select tournament teams, so it can't be all that bad.

I would be careful because anyone that claims that the RPI has any relevance whatsoever will be burned at the stake. :-)

Well, I suppose I could be swayed either way on the relevance of the RPI. I would have to first hear an intelligent argument, though.

Of course RPI isn't the be all end all but it does have some relevance after the non conference is over. Once league play starts the league in general isn't going to move up and down as much as a whole. The Women's RPI will probably hurt the better teams once the Summit starts because the league isn't very good. The men on the other hand won't be hurt much at all once the league starts since it comes into league play very strong.

I was referring to the mid major poll which is voted on by coaches in mid major conferences run by collegeinsider. And yes I would guess the RPI is still held in higher reguard by the womens selection committee whereas on the mens side, its used less and less.

Pretty amazing turnaround from one week to the next. The Yotes go from not even receiving a vote to being a ranked team in the College Insider Poll. I am guessing they pretty much came out of no where in the ESPN poll as well. 9th is pretty impressive. The poll write up talked a little about Seekamp and said that they would have more about her later. It will be interesting to see what they say about her.
I believe some of the national people make too big of a deal out of the win over Illinois. I don't sense an over the top sensation from either the fans or the team from beating the Illini. Sure there were alot of smiles involved but I think alot of people just think USD is the better team. Just because Illinois is from the Big 10 doesn't make them some sort of great team. They are solid and a challenge no doubt but I think the Yotes beat them 7 out of 10 if both teams have home court in half the games. The Coyotes are a very impressive team watching them game in and game out and they played just a solid game to defeat Illinois. Very poor first 15 minutes and a very nice last 25.
I believe that USD and SDSU are so far above the rest of the league that it would be a surprise if either team didn't finish at least 12-4 in the Summit but 13-3 is very realistic for a league record for both. If one manages to sweep the other that team may end up going in the neighborhood of 15-1. I would suppose IUPUI is the 3rd wheel in the league and maybe they figure out a way to defeat one of the big 2. At the end of the day I believe both South Dakota school are amongst the best 64 teams in the country but both may not make it in the tourney because the Summit overall is a very weak women's basketball conference.
