I really wonder in this day and age of technology and social media if the best days are behind us (and I mean all live sporting events) with getting big crowds to come to games anymore. There is always something to do now a days. Just the internet alone gives a person so much more to do then there ever was in the decades past. I remember when I grew up in the 80's I was outside constantly with friends just doing whatever as there wasn't anything much else to do. Now it seems like kids grow up completely different. Everything is at their finger tips. There are so many more options now for entertainment value.

Here is another thought about why the attendance used to be so much better back in the D2 days. In the NCC, they were all men's and women's double headers and on Friday's and Saturday's at night. With this scheduling, I think more people would travel to Vermillion from further distances and spend the weekend and go to 4 games. Now there are rarely double headers and rarely at night. And the NCC was all more local teams so their fans traveled to road games better. Now there aren't enough local teams in the Summit that their fans travel well to road games.
I'm not trying to make excuses for anyone, but I think this could have a lot to do with the attendance problems. People aren't going to travel the distance as many times for 1 game.

In fact, I'd say technology, for all of the good things it does, is also eroding our society. I'll put it this way, do you want to go out and live? Or do you want to watch somebody else go out and live on a 4.6" screen?

Ok so without everyone freaking out on me, let me bring up something brought up earlier by some. I know we haven't played the best competition at home yet, but most single game tickets are $15. I know season tickets are $300, so they are a better deal but maybe that is stopping some from coming. Did anyone watch when we played Arkansas? There was hardly anyone there. They kept advertising on the game that tickets were all general admission, and were $5 all year long or you can get a season pass for $50. That sounds like a high school to me. Then I watched sdsu men play Oklahoma. They were advertising season tickets for women's games for $100 and men's season tickets for $160. I don't know. It's just a thought I guess. Just gonna throw this out there without any research but I'm guessing they can do that because their big money maker is football

But how much is a school like USD pulling in from selling 800 tickets at $15 for a game compared to if they sell them for $5 and have a significantly larger fan base that shows up because they are $5. I know some feel like this is just how "DI Sports" works but its not working.
Ticket revenue has to make up a very small portion of what covers the budget at schools in the Summit League. I do like splitting the men's and women's tickets up. $600 for a couple to get season tickets is too much for a Summit League team IMO.

OK - so I'll the question that begs to be asked. What can we (you) do to get more butts in seats? Advertise more. If I didn't know about games from being a big fan I may not even be aware that a game is going on. This may sound a bit strange but have people call phone numbers that are on record that have come to games in the past or from whatever list they may have. Make a quick 15-30 second call welcoming them to the next game or future games. Sometimes something simple like that could make a huge difference. Have people at the entrance ways to thank the fans for coming whether that is for fans coming in or for them leaving. Not everyone is technically a VIP by the book but make everyone feel like a VIP. Open up a few more good seats for regular people that just want to buy season tickets and make those packages a good deal. Allow mixed season tickets and also allow season tickets for just either men or women. Sell smaller ticket packages to be used at ones discretion. Maybe they already do this. Maybe open up a few more parking spaces for everyone. At the same time reach out to the Howling Pack members and explain the strategy to them so they understand what is going on. I can't think of one donor, even a big donor that would have a problem with that for the overall good of the program. Do not raise ticket prices for sure. If they ended up raising football season tickets or individual game tickets that might end up costing fans. If they raised them enough I probably would have to make the tough choice not to go either. It is tough for basketball to get ideal game times and dates but if there is anything that can be done to do that it would only help. Maybe the Summit could consider a Friday Saturday arrangement like the NCC did. I know the travel might be a little tougher but I think that could work somehow. Also double headers and more double headers. Oh did I say double headers.

Robodialing? Do you want people to hate the school?
That said there isn't enough publicity given to when there are home games for basketball. Football is easy, it's Saturday afternoons in the fall, you just need to check from week to week if there is a home game that coming Saturday. For basketball the dates and times are all over the place. You have to be looking for it. Much easier for the casual fan to plan if they are aware of the schedule, or if the fact there is a game is plopped right in front of their face.

I would love more parking and double headers.

Who said anything about robodialing?
I am talking about calling people that have already been to a game and not using a dialer or an automated call. Real voices, which would maybe be a good work study job. So let me understand, it is ok for the University to call trying to solicit donations to their school, but it is not ok for a call just simply welcoming a a fan that has already been to a past game to come back to a game. I am not talking about soliciting howling pack donations or selling anything. Just simply letting them know about a game or future games. Nothing at all about selling unless the person that answers brings up wanting to buy a ticket or something. To me that is kind of a personal touch that is a good thing and not a bad thing. Has anyone ever heard of killing with kindness. That tends to work on a lot of people.

Bastards started calling from restricted numbers (unblockable) to prevent people from doing just that. I like where your head is at though. A great way to do that for younger people is through Snapchat but most of our fans probably don't even know what Snapchat is.
