The Coyotes were swept at Fort Wayne on Saturday to fall one game behind Denver in the loss column. If USD beats Denver at home that would only force a tie with the Pioneers assuming both teams win out. Depending on the tie breakers (and both teams would have split) with the loss to Fort Wayne the team may no longer control their own destiny to being the top seed in the volley ball tourney. Could be a damaging loss to Fort Wayne but we will have to see.

We are about to find out a lot about Coyote Volleyball. The Coyotes host a crucial match against Denver on Friday night. If the Coyotes win they would move into a tie with Denver for first place. The defending Summit champs have gained 3 games on the Coyotes in about a month. They have been hot coming into this match with a 8 game winning streak. The good news is that Denver has to go to NDSU on Saturday to play the 3rd place Bison who have won 5 in a row themselves. If the Coyotes lose to Denver they would be at best the #2 seed for the conference tourney and could still slip below NDSU. The Coyotes play the hapless Jacks on saturday so that should be a win. I want to say that in volley ball the team that wins the conference gets to host the post season volley ball tourney. I went to the Denver web site and apparently Denver owns the tie breaker over USD if they beat NDSU. So for USD to get the top seed they need two wins coupled with two Denver losses. If USD wins on Friday they will be huge fans of NDSU the next night.
Denver has now won every home game in the Summit for 3 straight years so having to go out to Denver for the conference tourney is probably not a good proposition.

It really doesn't matter if you are #1 or #2 seed for the tournament because if it goes the way seeding works, 1 vs 2 doesn't happen till the championship match. I actually prefer that we've been beat a couple of times because I think it would be tough to head to conference tournament with a huge target on your back. They now know they have to play well to win it and get the auto-bid. Home court in our league isn't that big of deal at most venues. Average attendance, although I haven't looked it up, can't be over 300-400 fans. That's not enough noise to be big momentum changers. If we play well, we have a shot. If not, like any other sport, we go home. What the gals do know is they do have the talent to pull this off. It won't be an upset if they do.

Coyotes with a ginormous win vs Denver with a 15-13 win in the 5th set. Now the Coyotes can clinch a share of the conference title with a win over the bunnies. We need to be cheerleaders for the Bison to allow the opportunity for the Coyotes to win the title outright and be sole conference champs. #1 seed on the line tomorrow.

Denver won at NDSU tonight in 5 sets. The Pioneers and Coyotes tie for the league title but Denver will be the #1 seed by tie breaker. Actually Denver was already the host site regardless of whether they would have been the #1 seed or not. I guess the #1 seed does not necessarily get to host. The Coyotes get a first round bye and will play the winner of the NDSU vs IUPUI matchup in the semi-finals.

I was not able to find that tidbit of info while doing research but I think one of the pages at the Summit site may have been down at that time. Well that Denver win tonight did end up being important then.

So I decided to find out how the VB team did in terms of attendence numbers. Here is a recap from last year's averages for the summit league:
2015 Summit League average home attendance: 443 2015 Summit League team's averages:
719 - NDSU 630 - Oral Roberts 494 - UNO 473 - IPFW 402 - SDSU 398 - IUPUI (had to use 2014 numbers, website is messed up) 346 - Denver 278 - Western Ill 243 - USD
Here are the 2016 numbers for the Yotes: vs UND ----------2401 vs UMKC ----------656 vs Oral Roberts ---430 vs NDSU ----------695 vs IUPUI ---------1013 vs Fort Wayne ----501 vs Iowa State ---1397 vs UNO -----------674 vs Western Ill ----453 vs Denver --------457 vs SDSU ----------683 Average ---851 Average (minus opener) 696
So the official attendance puts us from last to first in the conference! even if you exclude the first game, since it was the opening of the Den, our average puts us in the top 2 from last year's Summit averages! Obviously winning helps, and the new arena helps, but I think the fans did a great job supporting the team this year.
Maybe we will start a longer-term rivalry with Denver, and get into the playoffs on a more regular basis. Kind of like how we are challenging State for WBB dominance. It would be great for the school, IMO, and could help draw in the alumni a little more.
