Todd Lee interview from just before the Bahamas trip. John waited to release the full interview, because the third recruit hadn't signed yet.

kwsn.com/podcasts/sports-talk-with-kwsn/5093/mick-garry-on-the-phog-experience-mens-womens-noncon-wrap/Here's John Gaskins interviewing our Argus Leader reporter, Eeyore, on the end of the non-conference season for the Yotes. Here are some fun quotes: JG: Bill Self has played the complimentary game well, for any opponent that comes in there. Was he doling them out after the game (for the Coyotes)?Eeyore: ... Well, there were a couple of questions asked, where he was given the opportunity to attribute the fact that it was a 9-point game after 30 minutes... to say that the Coyotes had something to do with that.... In my estimation, he decided (to say) "nope". Let's talk sense, here. (He) said it mostly had to do with Kansas's poor shooting to that point. And I would agree with him. They were getting a lot of opportunities to score, and they just weren't doing it... [...] JG: As we've now completed non-conference play, how have the Yotes navigated life without Hagedorn? How does it look?Eeyore: Well, they can point to five games where they had leads in the second half, and they didn't win the games. And you could (look at it) like that.... and see that maybe there's not that many problems here. That they're just gonna need to tweak a few things. Or you can go the other route and point to the persistent problems with being able to shoot the basketball, and think that that's not gonna translate very well as the season goes on. I guess (being more of a realist), I think they are going to have to overcome the fact that they just don't score a lot of points. Even when they WIN games, offensively they struggle. They would say their best win so far was Colorado State on the road. And even in THAT game they were really rugged from the field. Listening to Todd Lee after his last game, (he's proven to be a very straight-shooting straight-answering type of coach) But (he said) after the loss at home, that they're gonna have to play really good defense this year, because it doesn't look like the rest of their game is gonna come around. They get open shots in their half-court offense. Their new offense produces open shots. Some of that is just because (the opponents) have decided they don't really need to cover these guys anymore. *Gaskins laughs* But... a lot of open shots. They just haven't been knocking them down. They went into the season without any of these guys being college scorers. Their two college scorers were Matt, and Hagedorn emerging as somebody .... you make darn sure he gets 15 shots type-of-player. In their absence, you're getting what you're gonna get. Maybe someone is gonna get a little more comfortable in the offense, and start becoming a consistent producer. But until then they are gonna have to win games by holding teams to under 60 points.

I think that for the most part, Zimmer and Garry try to both be objective with just a hint of homerism. But Zimmer is far more of a homer, and Garry is... well.... not a homer at all. He's not wrong that this Yote team needs to figure out what is going on with shooters and offense. My problem is that he always seems to dismiss or explain away the positives.
That's why I call him Eeyore.
The bolded phrase above is locker-room fodder, IMO. Consider the fact that this trolling came from our own beat writer. Can you imagine the blow-back from Jacks fans if Zimmer had said something similarly snarky about the Jacks defense?

Eeyore, that is perfect.

I know a lot of yote fans think Zimmer is an unabashed homer, although I don’t. Does everyone not remember all the crap jacks fans were laying on Zimmer when Otz was playing zone defense, had them in last place in the league standings, and people were questioning the hire? Zimmer wasn’t necessarily a cheerleader but a realist through that ordeal. Saying only 3 games in March mattered.

Yeah, I wouldn't call Zimmer an unabashed homer. I would say he shows a good balance of objectivity with some homerism. I would also say that he is more knowledgeable than Garry in both football and basketball. I don't really feel like I have gained any additional insight after listening to a Garry interview or reading a Garry article.
With Zimmer, he knows he can only go so far with criticism of the program or coaches. He didn't take a strong stand on the Joose situation, for example. Or there is the article he wrote about USD and cramp-gate where he basically said "it didn't happen, and if it did happen, it doesn't matter because it didn't affect the outcome". That's not what I would call the highlight of his journalistic career.
But he knows his stuff, picking the Yotes women to win in Vermillion last year, facing a good deal of criticism. I also recall him explaining why 2,000 fans at Frost feels like a sellout due to the way the arena is set up.
I'll even give Garry some props for acknowledging how good the Women's team is this year. He even explained away the Indiana loss to a "bad shooting night". At this point you'd have to be a complete idiot to not see the women's team as good, though. Not much of a newsflash there. It took an undefeated regular season for him to come around completely on last year's women's team.

kwsn.com/podcasts/sports-talk-with-kwsn/5093/mick-garry-on-sdsu-showdown-mean-gene-okerlund-vikings-flop/Eeyore again interviewed at KWSN about the upcoming Showdown games. He talks USD from 5:15 to 9:00. I don't necessarily disagree with anything he says in this interview. His pessimism or "realism" just gets old to me. Like at the end of the USD section, Craig Mattick pushes Mick to identify "something positive" about the men's team, since Mick wouldn't offer that on his own. Also, I'd like to see him stick his neck out and throw out a prediction for the games.

Here's Craig and John's take on the scheduling of the rivalry game as well (starting at the 10:30 mark):
John: Mick, It's always a pleasure. We appreciate your time. Talk again next Wednesday.
Mick: Great. Thanks guys!
John: There he goes. Covering the "big ones" between USD and SDSU ... What do we call that now? ... the "Showdown Series". Are you on board with the "Showdown Series"?
Craig: Not really. I like the old rivalry series. (this week) The women will play Saturday afternoon and the men will play Sunday afternoon. Not a fan of Sunday afternoon games. It should be double-headers, which I believe the rematch will be a double-header up at Frost.
*he actually has this backwards, Vermillion is the Double-header*
John: And I understand the HQ of the Summit League is now in SF, so the chances are, they listen to this show. So before i bash them for that Sunday scheduling of the Men's game, I understand there are a lot of factors that go into putting schedules together that we don't know much about. But do they realize that 3:30 is exactly when the double-header for Sunday's NFL games start? A lot of people like watching that.
I get that Jacks and Yotes fans might flock to Vermillion on Sunday, because it's always a big game... and that game will be on MidcoSN if you ... don't want to go ... but COME ON! You could schedule that game any other day of the Week than the Sunday of the NFL playoffs, for people who are not hardcore fans that might want to check in on that game. Including me, and probably you as well, Craig.
Craig: Well, the Northern Sun also had Sunday games last weekend, and I think they have another one coming. I just don't like Sunday games for college basketball.
John: I don't mind them after the NFL season. That's fine. The Big Ten has a lot of them because all their conference games are on TV.
Craig: I'm with ya. Once the Superbowl's done.

Normally I agree with Gaskin's takes, but I guess I disagree on his take about Sundays. The Superbowl is in early February. If they waited until then to schedule any Sunday games, they would have about three weeks. Sorry to inconvenience you sports-casters, but seasons over-lap. The double-header is just about sold-out, so that argument is moot.
And while I'm at it, I may as well mention that the football season for both NFL and FBS is way too long, anyway.
Get rid of the bowls nobody watches, and the long layoff, and have a normal playoff in December. End it January 1 as God intended.
Get rid of the NFL preseason games and start the season earlier. I'd rather see the Superbowl in mid-January.
I'm sure many of you will disagree with me on this, but in a sport like football, where you can't have multple games in a week, no playoff should be more than three or four rounds. It takes too long. 8, 12 or 16 teams is max in my book. The only reason the FCS Championship is played so late is to avoid being overshadowed by the bowls or the FBS playoff. It should have already happened IMO.
I love football, but greed is the reason the season keeps getting stretched.

I don't think the games should be a doubleheader, or during Winter break. Maximize total attendance for your one rivalry game (or is it two with UND joining the fold?). Running up against NFL playoff games is a non-factor to me unless it's the Super Bowl.
Unrelated conversation: The FCS field is good for me. 24 teams when there's 100+ makes sense to me. Every conference should have a bid, and then at-larges for major conference teams that are head-and-shoulders above other conferences. I don't like the timing of the title game though. We really couldn't have squeezed that in before Christmas?
