Can you post the full article? Agreed. Don't tease me with subscription only content. Pony up! The Athletic is well worth it. Here is the part of the mailbag about the Summit League, but the entire article lead was a giant picture of Umude. Who will win the Summit? — Luke B. Straight and to the point, Luke. I like it. South Dakota State has been the easy choice the past couple of years, but with both Mike Daum and T.J. Otzelberger moving on, this is probably a rebuilding year for the Jackrabbits. Did North Dakota State, which made the NCAA Tournament despite finishing the regular-season 15-15, turn the corner with its late run through the conference tournament? Or did the Bison just get hot at the right time? They do bring back pretty much everybody and were picked first in the preseason poll. I’ll go out on a small limb and say the Summit still goes through the state of South Dakota, just not Brookings. South Dakota has an experienced nucleus led by junior wing Stanley Umude and a couple of interesting international transfers. Let’s see if the Coyotes can make their first NCAA Tournament since joining Division I in 2008-09.

I hate being all sensitive, but this quote is mildly irritating. Yes, we joined D-1 in 2008-09, but we weren't playoff eligible. We didn't join the Summit League until 2011. I don't think we were eligible for the SLT until 2012-13. Whatever. The point remains, we are due and need to step up!

Nice KDLT piece on Stan and the Yotes Some misleading quotes in here: "Coyotes are off to their best start in years" 17-18 started 12-3 and went 26-9 that year "One of those historic accomplishments would be leading the Coyotes to their first SL Championship in program history." won the Championship in 16-17, never have won the tournament though.

Yeah, that's one of those things that can be a point of contention. For Major programs in men's basketball, the "Tournament Champion" title holds less weight than the "Regular season Champion", but for one-bid leagues it is the reverse IMO. When people just say "championship" it's not always clear which one they mean. For example, the Jacks' women's team mention on the title of their twitter account they are "nine-time Summit League Champs", despite the fact that they have only won the regular season championship six times, and only once in the last six years. The Summit League doesn't help this confusion with their banners. Compare the 2019 banner: with the trophy:

Its not a huge deal I am just nit-picky. How about the MBB team win the regular season and SLT titles and then I won't have to worry about it!

If you just say "championship", technically speaking that 's the regular-season title. The tournament title should have the modifier word. In practice, it's more common to be the reverse, though. Especially for mid-majors that focus on the auto-bid.

As I've said for years the league champion should go the big dance in all D1 conferences and if there are open slots then local tournaments fill the slots. A team could go winless in a one bid conference, win 3 games in the local tournament at the end of the season and go to the big dance which is dumb!! Put another what if the NFL had 21 preseason games then a tournament at the end of the season to decide who goes to the Super Bowl??
Different example--I'm not interested in the BCS 4 team "tournament" until in is expanded to at least 8 teams otherwise "experts" some years determine the top 4....

I get your point, but I do like it as it is. Everyone has a shot to make the big dance and Tournament time is exciting because of it. Yeah it sucks not getting in like WBB has a few years. The flip side is the Yotes have the same opportunity to knock someone off in a down year.
