Let's not make this into something it isn't. The team last year simply wasn't very good. Point guard play was one big change from the beginning of the year to the end. Trey Norris should not be a starting PG for a division 1 team and should not be playing 36 mins a game. Not to say that Mccleland was that great, but Norris is an 8 minute per game role player. Smith was forced into that with the exit of Mccleland. Arguably our best player was DJ Davis and everyone (apparently) thought he was better suited for division 2. Outside of him and Flack, we were not an athletic group by any means. The biggest disappointment last year (to me) was the development of Jech and Hagedorn. I can't remember which game it was earlier in the year, but Hagedorn was more assertive and made some nice plays. He was a large part of the reason we won. We never saw that player again the rest of the year. Expecting bigger things from those two this year. I'm with Cousin Eddie. This team is much more talented than last years and I don't think it's close. Will be fun to see how well they come together. First game is just over 2 weeks away.

I don't believe it is. Since it is a free exhibition, I think they want to encourage folks to come to the SCSC and also do not want to give anything away to Drake (not that they couldn't just have scouts attend the game).

Just curious, what exactly was the reason that Boots left so late in the off-season in 2013? This may be topic for a new thread, but I never did hear an actual reason for him leaving at the time that he did. If someone could answer that for me, I would appreciate it.
That being said, I'm more in agreement with Cousin Eddie here. I have a lot of optimism for this team, but I can understand why others do not. This team had some serious issues last year, and I think the large of that stemmed from three transfers sitting, and a coach/player dynamic which led to some animosity between said coach/player(s). I do not believe last season should be an indication of how this team will perform. Instead, I would look at Smith's first year.
The program won its first Summit League tourney game in Smith's first year. Smith had a little more talent that year than he did the next season, and further, that was relatively the same players as the James year (I also like to not think about that season).
Anyway, I think the consensus is that this isn't a make or break year with Coach Smith, but I believe it is when we truly start to see how he recruits and coaches his players in a tough league.

www.goyotes.com/news/2016/11/2/mens-basketball-inside-2016-17-coyote-basketball-media-day.aspx?path=mbballLink for media day interview with Coach Smith and Flack, Dickerson and Hurst. Of course Smith is optimistic and the first thing that he mentions is the length and athleticism. Eventually that should translate to better defense. Smith did mention that the focus is on defense and rebounding as both seem to be lacking so far in the small sample size that is available to the team. He mentioned that the players have all gotten better in the off season but that is a pretty generic statement because what somewhat dedicated athlete will not? This is kind of a funny observation but without even seeing these guys play both new comers Dickerson and Hurst actually kind of looked like that were more athletic just sitting at the press conference. Both definitely have some nice muscle tone and deep voices. They kind of look more like developed athletes ready to make an immediate contribution and had no kid like appearances that maybe some of the past players might have had. In other words they looked like high mid major type players and not players that looked like they were kind of in the D2 mode. So maybe the talent will make a significant difference this year. I am very much looking forward to making the trip for the SCSC debut double header a week from Sunday. Should be a great atmosphere. BTW, Coach Smith mentioned talking to someone regarding the facility. He metioned Pinacle Arena which I believe is the one in Lincoln NE. I believe that is the home of the Huskers and built by the same company that build the SCSC. Coach Smith said he couldn't believe how loud that arena was down there. The individual that he was talking to said that if you like the way things sound in there just wait until you hear the noise that will be generated in the SCSC. If that isn't exciting I don't know what is. After all the first purpose of a facility is to give the home team as much of a home court advantage as possible. Sounds like it's gonna be a noise pit. People that think the Dome gave the Yotes a bigger home court advantage then the SCSC will, well you know about that swamp land property that is always for sale for the suckers. It's not even gonna be close.

Went to the first half of tonight's exhibition. Starting lineup was Dickerson, Hurst, Mooney, Burch-Manning, Flack. Saw a lot of freshmen Simpson, Peterson, and Armstrong. Team looks far more athletic but did not have a good half against this D3 school, having to rally to take a six (I think?) point lead at halftime - something like 50-44.
It really didn't hit me until I was in the stands looking at our guys on the court and bench that this is just an entirely new team. So many new faces. Four new starters. New facility. One thing I enjoyed and didn't notice at the volleyball game I attended was that the lights on the upper rows of seating were dimmed. It was pretty cool to kind of be seated in dim light with the new court and ribbon boards above glowing. Going to be a fantastic place to watch basketball.

As much as I would like to try to get last year out of my mind something like this makes that kind of hard to do. It sounded like the UND scrimmage didn't go very well either. Even as a not real motivated team they shouldn't be having to rally to lead a D3 team scrimmage or no scrimmage. I can see a veteran team not taking a D3 team seriously but these guys should be in the mode of trying to earn PT. Will this group be a collection of individuals or a team? Hopefully both. The real test will be against Bowling Green. Which players looked good and which players were kind of not looking the best?

Stayed for all the game. I'll post my thoughts Monday. Simpson though..impressive Final score? 106-76 according to the athletics website ( www.sidearmstats.com/usd/mbball/). Simpson led the Yotes with 20 points, coming in 19 minutes of play.

That is cool about Simpson. That is a nice surprise for him since he is a true freshman. I figured with him that maybe he wouldn't make a huge impact so early but it is just one game. Good sign though.

Good sign though. All 3 true freshmen will contribute this season no doubt(first 3 guys off the bench tonight). Get excited cf....seriously man? Comparing this team to last year after one half of exhibition bball that you weren't even at? Team rebounding and offensive flow were issues. Offensive flow not really concerned about since we played 12-13 guys. Understandable in that situation. Rebounding and post d was very poor and need to be cleaned up. Coach smith was visibly upset all game about both. For positives, I was really impressed with burch manning and simpsons all around games. Burch manning does a little of everything, including bringing he ball up and being able to guard 1-5. Very underrated in the way that smith wants to play D. I know Simpson won't always shoot that well, but he's a smooth true D1 pg. handles it well, he's long, and he creates offense for teammates. Curious to see how the rotation plays out. I see us leaning heavily on our strength, which will be guard play based on tonight's small Sample. Couple other quick tidbits: hurst is crazy athletic and Peterson can stroke it. He has such a pure stroke, but looked so hesitant and unsure. Looking forward to seeing a bigger sample size from both of them.

Simpson clearly impressed me the most tonight. Did not look like a freshman coming off the bench. Our only senior, Flack, struggled early on to find the hole... they are gonna go through some serious growing pains before they find their stride this season.

Hard to judge by this game, but Simpson and Burch-Manning looked pretty impressive and athletic.
