Year 3 for the coach and no championship. Better fire her, right?

25-12 to Denver in the first set. This Coyote team looks nothing like they did yesterday. I don't want to hear that home court doesn't matter because it does, and does quite a bit. Denver's experience doesn't help the Coyotes but the Yotes just beat this team at home a week ago. Denver is playing well but the Coyotes don't look ready to play or the moment is just too big being that this is the first year they have made it this far. USD either responds early in the 2nd set or it is going to be a long but short afternoon. I'm telling you home court doesn't make a big difference. 300 people there, and they always pad that amount. Crowd noise and the momentum that comes from that on;y applies where there's more than 25 people. We just got beat by a better team tonight. Great year for our gals and a super job of coaching by Leanne and staff. Kudos on a fantastic year

Just look at Denver's home record and look at USD's home record in conference games and tell me again that it doesn't matter. It does matter and the records prove that point. I believe Denver has gone 3 straight years without losing a conference game on their home court. I believe USD won every one of their home conference games. You cannot say with a straight face had this game been on USD's home court that it would not have made a difference. It's more than simply the fans but the travel and other factors as well. If the match would have been in Vermillion I am guessing it would have been very loud in there as well. As far as being beat by a better team, that team did not beat the Coyotes last weekend in Vermillion.
We will just have to agree to disagree like we do so often.

I've never understood why it's such an advantage (in all sports) but it clearly is.

There is a level of comfort you have from being in familiar surroundings that allows you to perform at peak levels. Going on the road comes with the distractions of having to live out of suitcase, sleeping in an unfamiliar bed, traveling takes something out of you so that you can't perform at peak levels.
The only recent case I can think of where it was better for a team to be on the road was this year's World Series. The Cubs played better on the road because there was just a suffocating level of pressure playing at Wrigley. Such a crushing level of pressure that it was actually better for them to be away and the team played looser on the road.

One sport where there doesn't seem to a be a big home advantage is hockey, at least at the NHL level. I have not quite figured that one out but a theory I have is that home teams might play a little more fee and offensive minded and in hockey it seems like a conservative defensive minded approach can play to a teams advantage. Road teams would tend to take a more conservative approach. Also in hockey you are generally only as good as your goal tending and net minders seem to play just as well whether at home or road. I don't have the analytics or any real numbers but it seems like home teams don't have as big of an advantage in that sport.
The pressure one faces at home can sometimes come into play but more than often the energy a team draws from their home fans seems to win out most of the time. Also less experienced/young teams tend to be home heavy teams where they have a much better record at home than on the road.

Its actually the opposite of what your NHL theory is, home teams tend to play more conservatively while road teams play loose and offensive minded. Being at home is actually a detriment. The reason for that is because it is very important to score the first goal of the game at home, but it's even more important not to get scored on first. Scoring first gets the home crowd into the game and creates momentum. Taking the lead early on the road takes momentum away from the home team. Momentum in hockey is huge. Falling behind early can turn the rink into a morgue.
Thing is teams will say they don't play any differently but human nature dictates that they do, and they don't even know it. In hockey there are about a million different decision going on at once since there are no "plays" ("plays" like in football, there are plays that are inherent in the game like give & go's, scissor plays, drop plays, etc.) and the game is free flowing. The difference in a game can be as simple as providing puck support by positioning your body a few feet to the right versus a few feet to the left. The game is that fast and the decisions are that numerous. This is what makes it the greatest game in the world and I just don't understand why more Americans don't "get it". Fast paced, free flowing, tactical, athletic, skilled, violent. It's actually the perfect American sport.
Enough thread drift. To get back on topic, great season out of the Lady Yote Volleyballers. Are there any post season tournament opportunities or is the season done?
