Not a horrible way to have to spend Thanksgiving weekend being in California. The Coyotes take on UC Riverside tonight at 7PM Central. They are 1-2 with a win vs San Diego State and losses vs USC and California. The Highlanders are no joke as they won the Big West Conference last year and were invited to the WNIT. On this Thanksgiving I'm thankful for their free stream but holy crap... I'm very thankful for the quality of USD's streams!!

35-32 Coyotes at half. Riverside led most of the half. It seemed at first like the Coyotes were just not going to have it tonight and with the long trip to California with the jet leg it was somewhat understandable. But they hung in there and snatched the lead just before half time including hitting a 15 footer at the buzzer. It is nice to hear other school's broadcasts and hear "Defending WNIT Champions" associated with their description of the Yotes. This Coyote team just keeps playing and pecking at you until next thing ya know they are beating you. That is how I looked at the first half. It didn't seem like for much of the half that the team had their A game but the Yotes have to be good to be winning this game at Riverside. If the Coyotes can elevate their game just a little more they should have a decent chance to pull out a win but it certainly won't be easy.

On this Thanksgiving I'm thankful for their free stream but holy crap... I'm very thankful for the quality of USD's streams!! I feel the same way as the refresh rate doesn't give a clear picture at full screen. Riverside has kind of a small gym but not as small as some of these Big Sky and western programs have. We should be thankful to have as nice of an arena as we do now and have a better overall video production as well. It wasn't that long ago that neither were true. Win or lose tonight I hope we get a rematch in Vermillion next year or soon thereafter.

53-44 Coyotes after the 3rd quarter. The Coyotes are now winning most of the hustle plays.

These refs are atrocious! The Ricky tack fouls they are calling on the Yotes are way lopsided. They are not calling the same crap on the UCR girls.

Coyotes win 61-55 but they went through a 10:00 span of not scoring according to the Riverside announcer. The 4th quarter was rough but the D held them in and allowed the offense to score just enough to get the win. I though a key play was when McKeever was being trapped but found a cutting Alison Arens for a huge layup that increased a 2 point lead to 4 with about a minute left. Very nice and very gritty win. The Yotes can get ragged at times but their will is almost always there and they pulled it off. Off to Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon.

Dawn happy with the effort. Coyotes outrebounded them by 16. A few too many offensive fouls. Dawn happy with Duffy's defensive effort. She said that UCR is athletic and a really good team and they may go on to win their conference. This is just another example tonight of why this team continues to be a pleasant surprise. This team is so tough both physically and mentally.

Gritty win by the Lady Yotes!! An amazing amount of offensive fouls against USD especially in the 4th several of which were very questionable. UCR was very tough defensively and athletic. Good tough win for the Coyotes!

Right before that play I said that the Yotes just needed to get the ball to Allison. Every game I'm amazed at how she is playing to start the year. she is a kid that doesn't get rattled and has come up big in the end of games all year.

During the offseason I remember chatting with someone who had the standard thought that this team would be WAY down. His question to me was "Who is going to be the next Seekamp?" I replied with "No one, but it looks like the younger players are a ton more athletic then the seniors we just lost." Allison Arens and crew are making that observation look accurate.
Great start to the season and win last night!

Great start to the season and win last night! I expected a huge letdown as well, especially after learning we would be missing two senior starters in Duffy and Trimboli. No game seemed safe and I was expecting the team to be about 2-3 at this point. I also was not expecting Alison Arens to go from playing a meager 8 minutes a game as a freshman to only sitting out 9 minutes in our first 5 games her sophomore season. Last night she played all 40 minutes, shot 10-13 for 27 points, and snagged 9 rebounds - and that's almost a typical stat line for her as she is averaging 22.6 points per game. Looks like we've got another special player from that Crofton pipeline.
