There were two traditions relating to football back in the 60s and early 70s that I remember. The first was immediately after the football game with SD State wherein the student body president of the losing team had to take off their pants and present it to their counterpart at midfield. This was done in Vermillion, but don't know if that was done in Brookings. The other was the Sitting Bull Trophy, which was presented to the winning football team after the annual game with UND. The trophy was a buffalo skull with the dates/scores painted on it. Not sure when both traditions were discontinued. Another tradition that continues to this day involves the consuming of alcoholic beverages before and after athletic games. In the interest of moderation, however, this applied only to football and basketball games, I believe. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sitting_Bull_TrophyRetired 2000 amid controversy involving Native American names and symbols in sports. Started in 1953 by Al Neuharth. I wouldn't mind the trophy game being resurrected, now that we will be back to playing them in 2017 and yearly starting in 2020. We could rename the trophy, if that is an issue with the Sioux Tribe. I would also like to see a travelling trophy just for football with the Jacks. Not sure why we never had one.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEBpO0deYhMUSD/SDSU have a rivalry trophy called the Little Brown Jug. Stig talks about it a little in a Jackrabbit Journal after the game last fall. Check out the video at 3:35 when they start talking about it.

There is a traveling trophy for SDSU-USD football. It is the little brown jug, and it made an appearance on Midco's Jackrabbit Journal with Tom Nieman after we lost to State last fall. Also, the following thread from Bisonville from 2003 mentions traveling trophies. Post 11 mentions the Sitting Bull trophy and post 16 mention the USD-SDSU little brown Jug. www.bisonville.com/forum/showthread.php?4745-Trophy-game-with-SDSU/page2

^^ Wow! great find. I wonder what the story is behind that Little Brown Jug? I can't find anything as far as history. I hope that the Athletic Departments don't try to marginalize it because of the corporate-sponsored "Showdown Series". That would be tragic.

Probably Davis Pharmacy. Still open for business in Vermillion.

Great work on the tradition thread.
My vote reinstate the Little Brown Jug (just attach it to the Corn Showdown Series promo), bring back the Sitting Bull Trophy, and if North Dakota wants to bring back their 'traditional' nickname, all the better!

Not really sure where to post this but when watching the Jacks at Bison tonight in men's basketball there isn't even a comparison to how fired up the fans get in opposition to when the Coyotes and Jacks get together and that goes for both Brookings and Vermillion. I am not sure how the old UND vs NDSU games were but a huge question is being answered tonight and that is that the fans in Fargo are just a little above average for their game vs SDSU. Certainly not the raucous type environment that is apparent for the South Dakota rivalry. This kind of reminds me how Coyotes fans would cheer when they play UND or NDSU. It's a nice game and a good game to be at but there is a totally different level of enthusiasm when comparing the rivalries. At least when compared to the D2 days. The days of the SDSU games in Vermillion and Brookings were very similar to what it was like during the WNIT championship game in April.

I've been following your discussion in the Dakota Dome thread. It appears to me that you are looking to establish some traditions. Have you ever considered auctioning tasty edible animals or dressing up in ragged old clothes? ;-)

You can also keep this one:

So has this jug been resurrected as a trophy for the game? Or has all the discussion about it been that we want it brought back?

So has this jug been resurrected as a trophy for the game? Or has all the discussion about it been that we want it brought back? Here's the video that was linked earlier in this thread: They talk about it from the 3:40 mark to 4:50 1. I was wrong about it being "lost" because SDSU has had it since 2001, the last time it was exchanged. It's just been somewhat "forgotten" in the D-1 move. 2. Coach Stig seems to be a proponent of promoting the rivalry, so I am going to assume we would get the trophy if we win on Saturday.

I posted this in another thread, but I thought I would put it here as well. It took me a while to look up the years on this, so I wanted it in a more "permanent" thread for future reference:
Some perspective:
1862 USD founded . . 1881 SDSU founded 1883 UND founded 1889 first USD-SDSU football game (oldest public in-state football rivalry in the nation) 1890 NDSU founded 1894 first UND-NDSU football game . 1903 first USD-UND game & SDSU-NDSU game . . 1922 NCC formed 1927 Little Brown Jug Trophy . 1938 Nickel Trophy . 1953 Sitting Bull Trophy . . . . . 2004 Dakota Marker Trophy
