OK - one week to go and the Yotes are in first place in both MBB & WBB. In both cases South Dakota controls its own destiny for the top seed in the SLT. And in both cases it looks like the teams are playing their best basketball right now. Can the Yotes pull of the basketball sweep?
MBB Standings:
USD 10-4 NDSU 10-4 Denver 8-5 IPFW 7-7 Omaha 7-7 SDSU 7-8 IUPUI 5-8 WIU 5-9 ORU 4-11
WBB Standings:
USD 11-3 WIU 11-3 SDSU 11-4 IUPUI 10-4 Omaha 6-8 ORU 5-9 NDSU 4-10 Denver 3-10 IPFW 2-12

The men travel to WIU and IUPUI, teams we beat at home (without Flack) by 7 and 11 points. WIU gave NDSU all they could handle yesterday in Fargo, losing in 2OT, which is a bit unnerving. It may be a blessing that we got to play these teams without Flack, so they won't have that first game's worth of preparation against him.
Thankfully NDSU is also playing their last 2 on the road. They lost their last two road games while we won our last two by double digits. Advantage USD.
We won't be needing those red unis in Sioux Falls.

The women are traveling to IUPUI and WIU, the other two teams left that are competing for the 1 seed (SDSU is effectively eliminated, they can only get the 1 if IPFW beats both WIU and IUPUI and USD loses both games).
We beat IUPUI 75-62 in Vermillion but they have been on a tear, winning 9 of their last 10 games. They may be lower in the standings but I think IUPUI is the tougher opponent of the two. If we win this one I think we win at WIU. WIU escaped Vermillion 86-78, handing us our only home loss of the year. We were down 15 at halftime, thanks to 15 turnovers and 31% shooting in the first half, but still climbed back into this one late.
Just for fun: Should we lose to IUPUI and win at WIU it would likely create a 4-way tie for 1st. In this scenario the seeding would be: 1. IUPUI 2. USD 3. WIU 4. SDSU. Half the teams playing in the tournament will claim they are regular season champions. Let's just win both games and take the title outright for a 3rd straight year.

Yotes,
How did you figure that tie breaker senario or is it documented somewhere. You would think that Western Illinois would get the 4th seed as they would be the only team that didn't split with all the other teams in the tie breaker as they got swept by IUPUI.

It looks like the men's bracket is starting to take shape. There is a very good chance that The Bison and Coyotes take the top two spots. Denver just needs one more win to likely hold onto the #3 spot but I don't believe they hold the tie breaker over NDSU should they catch them. Denver ends the season at SDSU which should be an interesting game. I believe if the Coyotes can split their remaining two games that it might be enough to get it done but for momentum sake a sweep would be awesome.
Here is how things are shaping up
1) USD 2) NDSU 3) Denver 4) Fort Wayne/Omaha 5) SDSU 6) Fort Wayne/Omaha 7) IUPUI/WIU 8) IUPUI/WIU
The Yotes getting a saturday game could be very important. I hate getting too far ahead but if they end up playing SDSU on Monday Night they would be playing a team that they are a little deeper then and with a day off in between games. The Yotes have been going 9 deep and if they have a little more energy to give it will really show up on the defensive end, rebounding and in 50/50 balls. Even if the Jacks have slightly rubbery legs it will show up on 3 point shooting but more in particular on defense. The Coyotes are already very good at getting to the basket.

Tiebreaker info at the bottom of this page: thesummitleague.org/tournaments/wbkb/2016-17/bkb_champ_additional_informationYou questioned my finding so I went back to it. 3 and 4 should be flipped. For some reason in this scenario after IUPUI secured the 1 I was then looking to how 2-4 fared against the 5th place team for the tiebreaker, when I should have started at 1st then went down.

IUPUI won at Denver 83-72. Did not see that comfortable victory coming, Denver doesn't look like they are playing their best basketball here at the end of the season.
USD has now clinched at least the 2 seed and will officially be playing on Saturday night at the SL tournament.

In a weird twist, the Yotes MBB play WIU and IUPUI this week - and one of those teams is almost certainly who they will play in the first round. The middle of the pack is a mess with Denver fading, SDSU scoring, and the others being wildly erratic.

BTW - if the Yotes WBB don't win the conference outright, I am really really really pulling for the 4-way tie.

The middle of the pack is a mess with Denver fading, SDSU scoring, and the others being wildly erratic. IUPUI and WIU are the most likely first round opponents for us, though there is a chance we play someone else. The conference is so muddled outside of the top 2 that I think the only opponents that we can't play are NDSU and Denver. As far as I can tell even Denver could still end up as the 7 seed if everything goes wrong for them, but in that scenario we would be the 1 seed. Oral Roberts could still climb to 8th if they beat NDSU and WIU drops their final two to USD and IPFW. I don't really have a preference for a first round opponent. I guess I want to play someone who is coming off a loss.

BTW - if the Yotes WBB don't win the conference outright, I am really really really pulling for the 4-way tie. But doesn't that senario put USD and SDSU at the 2 vs 3 matchup potentially in the second round. Not sure I want to deal with them until the final. I would almost rather the Coyotes either sweep both or get swept. If they sweep both they get the #1, if they get swept I believe they get #4 and play in the opposite bracket of the Jacks. Then if we play Western Illinois a third time in the second round then will we hear how hard it is for a team to beat a good team three times in the same season or doesn't that apply when the Coyotes would be the team to lose the first two.

The NDSU/ORU game is on ESPN3 tonight. ORU may have checked out, but hopefully they are looking to play spoiler.
