Well, If Fort Wayne were to leave next year, we would have less than six teams in three sports: Baseball, Men's Golf, and Men's Soccer.
UMKC would shore us back up to six in golf and soccer, so that's at least something. We could probably get a waiver for a year to find a sixth baseball school, or have a school bring it back.
This is all important for maintaining the basketball auto-bid.

First and foremost I'm a WIU fan, The other stuff that came up betweenn WIU and USD is water under the bridge (kinda). A close second is that I'm a big proponent of the Summit. The MVC sans Creighton and Wichita St. is a very average Mid-Major.
Western has not been setting the World on fire with the Summit but we are a founding member (similar to Drake in the MVC, and for a long time with Northwestern in the BIG TEN).
I would be interested to see the Summit as an all sports league with UMKC back in the fold and New Mexico State finding a home here. I would also like to see UNO reinstate football, they have a tremendous tradition. Maybe get a Big Sky school to filp.
I live in Peoria and watch Bradley Basketball, the MVC has been getting worse for 10 years.

No one else here seems to be on board with that idea. They'd raise the level of competition in the Summit.

History with the old NCC, plays football and baseball, travel partner to Denver.

I'd also love to see Northern Colorado back; New Mexico state too, but that might be a pipe dream. We're not in there footprint at all and even if they came in I think they'd always have their head on a swivel looking for greener pastures. As for UNO and football...not happening. No way the Nebraska Board of Regents allows another D1 football program in the state of Nebraska that could take even the slightest bit of attention away from the Huskers. Same with wrestling. As good as the Mav were they posed a threat to UNL wrestling and that wasn't going to fly. Hockey was the bone they threw UNO's way.

I would like the idea of New Mexico State about a thousand times better then that little metro Kansas City University. I just want the core 4 in the Dakota's to make moves that benefit them as a core more so then just appeasing what the Summit League Commissioner's Office wants. The Summit League itself doesn't seem to be a brand that wants to expand with like schools to the Dak 4. I want football schools in the Summit not wannabe schools that just want a home for basketball without much other effort to their athletic programs. To me quality of program trumps location of program.

Add New Mexico St then after add stony Brook travel in the conference is all ready to much almost as bad as when we had Southern Utah and Centenary

Would you say it costs more to get to New Mexico than Indianapolis or Fort Wayne? A flight is a flight, right?

When they were both in the Summit, yes...one flight, two games. I'm assuming Ft. Wayne is gone after next season. Does Las Cruces have commercial service or do you have to fly to El Paso and bus? Do all commercial flights all cost the same?

I'm guessing that the size of airport and proximity to the airport play a factor. Finding commercial flights to Denver might be easier than some places, that might require a charter, thus a lot more money.

I don't know what the maximum distance for busing is, (It might vary depending on the school and budget) maybe 5 or 6 hours? Vermillion is positioned perfectly in the Summit to reduce travel costs. Right in the center of the I-29 corridor.
It is about 5 hours to both Grand Forks and Kansas City. That only leaves Denver, Tulsa, and Ft. Wayne as flights. Macomb is about 7 hours, so that might be a borderline bus trip for us, too.
By contrast, the only bus-able school for Ft. Wayne right now is a 6-hour trip to Macomb. Not ideal for costs.

Assuming maybe a 7-hour max bus trip, here's how the 2018 teams would travel:
Omaha ...6 bus 2 flight USD .....5 bus 3 flight SDSU ....4 bus 4 flight NDSU ....4 bus 4 flight UND .....4 bus 4 flight WIU .....3 bus 5 flight
Ft Wayne 1 bus 7 flight ORU .....1 bus 7 flight Denver ..0 bus 8 flight
(its 8 hours from Omaha to Denver, could be a long bus)

UMKC would fit right in geographically- buses to 5 schools, and would strengthen ties to WIU, ORU and Omaha. Geography can be an important factor in stability.
