Regarding the NDSU/EWU game: If I'm not mistaken, the game will be played under quite smoky conditions due to all the wildfires in the vicinity. I don't know if that will have an affect on either team but it's an interesting question.
Even out here in the Black Hills we've had some days the past week where it has been unhealthy to venture outside due to smoke.

EWU's prep for the game is probably being affected. They can't practice outdoors, probably don't have an indoor field to get good reps on.
I believe NDSU got that treatment in 2015 in their opener against Montana too. I don't know if it had a big effect on the game or not, but they played much better in the rematch in Fargo during the playoffs.

Out for season might be premature. Other rumblings that there was an injury but not serious and he may still play Saturday. At this point I don't think anybody on the outside knows.

This person can shove it. We can't catch a break? First time in 6 years they aren't defending champions, I think breaks were caught.

I know, it's laughable. I remember us playing a game against NDSU with no running backs a few years back. Everybody hurt. That is what a bad break looks like. Hell, in the history of USD football have we ever caught much of a break? I'd say "no".

Since I've started watching (D1 era), I'd call the win at Minnesota, double FBS payment last year, and hiring of Bob Nielson as breaks. Far and few between though.

I have watched or paid attention to Coyote Football since the mid 60's. It seems like for every good break the Yotes have received over the years they have gotten about ten bad ones. I don't think I am too far off either.
Maybe the 'breaks' are starting to swing this way for awhile.
Go South Dakota !!

I agree that the breaks rarely go the Coyotes way and I have witnessed that from the early 90's. Some of it is just how good the team wasn't and some is just rotten luck. There were about 3-5 plays during the Western Illinois game that if just one goes the way of the Coyotes they wrap up the win and play after play down the stretch just kept going the way of the Necks. I still can't believe that fumble by the Yotes when they were almost in the end zone for the clinching score. That was just plain old rotten luck that cost the Yotes that game. The offense was staying aggressive trying to close out the game and just couldn't catch a break completing a pass down field and some of those plays were open where a receiver just missed catching a ball. One of the worst breaks I have ever seen in a football game was in 2006 when the Mavericks in Mankato beat the Coyotes in a critical game for playoff positioning when the Coyotes blocked a tying kick seemingly ending the game but MSU picked up the block behind the line and made it into the end zone from about 10 yards out to win the game. Not all the bad breaks have been that ridiculous but the program has been jinxed for many years.

Thought of UNI when reading Stewart Mandel's mailbag this week:
How many games would Texas have to lose this year to not be included in next year's preseason poll? — Jeff, Flourtown, PA Eight is probably the magic number. Texas lost seven last year and still made the cut, while Notre Dame lost eight and did not. Though it only took one home blowout of Temple for the Irish to crack both polls.

Last year Texas beat Notre Dame in the season opener. At the end the commentator shouted "TEXAS IS BACK!". My eyes nearly rolled out of their damn sockets, justifiably so given the rest of their season and who they actually just beat.
The voters must pay a lot of attention to how much the head coach is paid. Why else would UNI be in the top 25 right now?
