Street and Smith magazine is out and has picked USD to win the conference regular season title and SDSU to finish second. Should be a fun season for all South Dakota basketball fans. In addition the cover has a picture of Mike Daum along with two other players from the region. The link below is to the Summit Hoops twitter page so you may have to scroll down to find it over time. twitter.com/summithoops

I think it will be a dog fight between the Coyotes and Jacks. Both teams had incredible turnarounds last year. The Coyotes turned it around from the previous season and the Jacks somehow turned it around within the season. It's too bad that both were in the same half during the Summit tourney because the Jacks were not a 4 seed the way they were playing. In spirit they were the 2 seed.
The Coyotes lose a very key player in Flack but they have a lot coming back and I think the new comers are going to be good as well. Daum is obviously by far the best player in the conference but I would have to give the edge at depth to the Coyotes. I am sure Mooney and the Jacks bench would like to have a little something to say about that.

In that video it must have been rough for Kelly Stewart to have to announce that SDSU was the pre season favorite in both polls. Inside she must have been thinking "we will see about that" and biting her lip at the same time.

Conference play starts on Saturday. After watching the non-conference here is my approximation of how things turn out:
1. USD 12-2 2. SDSU 11-3 3. IPFW 9-7 4. NDSU 8-6 5. WIU 6-8 6. Denver 5-9 7. UNO 3-11 8. ORU 2-12
The top two teams look well above the rest of the conference, and the bottom few teams look significantly worse than the middle of the pack.
My prediction does assume that Hagedorn is fine. If he misses any time then we'll be in some trouble.

Here is my official Summit League Prediction
T1) South Dakota State 12-2 (wins tie breaker) T1) South Dakota 12-2 3) North Dakota State 8-6 (wins tie breaker) 4) Fort Wayne 8-6 5) W Illinois 7-7 6) Denver 5-9 (I probably have them too low) 7) Omaha 3-11 8) Oral Roberts 1-13 (I think they are going to struggle)
I think the Coyotes will be the most consistent team week in and week out but I also think there is a chance the Coyotes could get swept by the Jacks in the regular season. I am not saying they will but they could. I do think the Jacks floor is lower than the Coyotes. I think the Jacks ceiling is slightly higher. It seems like the Bison always seem to find a way and they usually bring it on the D end.

Since there is no distinction between Men's and Women's in this thread I will also put my Women's predictions here.
1) South Dakota State 13-1 (I really hate doing this so hopefully I hex them) 2) Western Illinois 11-3 (I preached that they were not getting respected, and I didn't either) 3) South Dakota 9-5 4) Oral Roberts 8-6 5) Omaha 7-7 6) NDSU 5-9 7) Denver 3-11 (this one is probably too low but I have to have my wins equal my losses) 8) Fort Wayne 0-14 (It would be very difficult to get this correct)
North Dakota comes in next conference season luckily. It would sure by nice if we could add another school to get the conference back to 10 teams by next year. I really think UNC could be a possibility.

Went through and picked each of the conference games. Here is how I see it shaking out: USD 13-1 NDSU 10-4 SDSU 9-5 FW 9-5 Denver 5-9 WIU 4-10 Omaha 3-11 ORU 3-11
Obviously I think there is a huge divide between the top 4 teams and the rest. For all the rabbit trolls who will read this, I think they will struggle in road games - it is not a well-seasoned group, and the depth isn't very good (I suspect that will be better by SLT, assuming no injuries to the top 2 players).

They got mauled at Kansas but have played well on the road otherwise. The game in Fargo tomorrow should tell us what to expect there.
I do believe they will lack consistency, but the rest of the league is just so far behind that they will coast to a 2nd place finish. Maybe NDSU is better than I realize and they make a run at 2nd, but I'm not sold after their collapse last year.

My prediction that the top two teams are well above the rest of the conference looks spot on right now. Conference play is about 5-6 games played - USD and SDSU are the only teams with a winning record, 2 games separate 2nd and 3rd place. It's a similar look on the women's side too. We may be headed for a USD-SDSU doubleheader at the Summit League championship.

For the men on Wednesday if the Jacks pick up the win at the SCSC the conference race is all but over. The Coyotes have to win that game. For the Women they could lose at Frost and still have a good chance. The Coyotes would have played at all of the three other top contenders whereas the Jacks would still have to play at USD and Western Illinois. If the Coyotes can escape with a win they would be in the drivers seat and force the Jacks to win in Vermillion and same goes for Western Illinois. It looks like the Leathernecks are either slightly or extremely over rated. They got hammered at home by the Coyotes and in Brookings. After beating Stanford suddenly they can't beat a good team or really even stay close with one other than their home win over ORU.
Ultimately the Coyotes will be judged by what they do in Sioux Falls, especially the men's team.

The rabbits haven't dropped any of the games I expected them (games where they were the better team but just weren't focused), so credit them. NDSU & FW are both a bit of a disappointment (why isn't Hunter going off every game?). Hurst is the only significant injury for the top half that I'm aware of, so it appears it will be the 2 horse race everyone expected. Kind of boring, IMO.
