It's going to be very interesting to see how things shake out. As deadly as this team could be offensively, there are significant concerns defensively and on the glass.

FWIW, it sounds like the score from the secret scrimmage was Gophers 95 Yotes 87 at Williams Arena.

Thanks. They're still a bunch of snots over there whining about "a South Dakota team putting up 85" on their defense. It's not like the women didn't kick the crap out of them last time out scoring over 100...or the men winning last time they met...and the football team for that matter.

Sounds like about what we were expecting. Fast game, high-scoring for both teams, and when playing a power-5 team, they are going to out-physical our defense. I'm guessing the ISU game might be similar. No reason to panic. Our defense may just have to go through some growing pains. We saw a learning-curve last year, too.

Just because a team is a power 5 team in itself means nothing to me. The Coyotes are better then a significant portion if not half the power 5 teams period. Oregon and their power 5 team got walloped by the Coyotes when the game wasn't in their gym. The Coyotes were also significantly better then Illinois and they played them twice home and away going 2-0. The Coyotes should win in Minnesota half the time and beat them two-thirds of the time if they would play them at the SCSC. Exhibitions mean less than they mean more but if it was a real game I wouldn't consider an 8 point loss as a good loss. It wouldn't be terrible just not something we should be happy about. Right now the Coyote program is a little better than Minnesota's. Minnesota only went 5-11 in the big 10 last year. The Coyotes I think would do at least that well. Iowa State was 9-9 in the big 12 last year. The Coyotes should at least make that game competitive.

Iowa State is in the NCAA tournament on a regular basis. Coach Fennelly is a good guy that gets a lot out of his team. The Coyotes are certainly capable of pulling the upset, no doubt about it.
Prediction: Cyclones 79 Coyotes 81

Looks like you have to pay to watch online. That's disappointing.

John Thayer will be my eyes in that case. Is the audio stream offered on the Goyotes website the same as the Learfield radio coverage? (Coyote Sports Network)

Prediction: Cyclones 79 Coyotes 81 I agree. Fennelly is one of the most respected coaches in D-1 WBB. I don't care what their record was last year, they have all the pieces to turn around and be a top-ten team this year. Talent, size, coaching, tradition, expectations, fans, ISU checks all the boxes. This will be a challenge, no question. With that having been said, our experience, depth and skill at guard should play a major factor in this game, I think. This being the first game of the year plays to our advantage, too. Will it be enough to counter their size and athleticism? I don't know. I concur on it being a high-scoring, close game. Coyotes 85-82

www.cyclones.com/watch/?Archive=9165&type=LiveThe video didn't link, but this is Fennelly's preview of the game. He talks a lot about his recruiting class too (top 20), but here are a few quotes on the game: " A lot of it (ISU's line-up) will depend on who we're playing. South Dakota, for example, is a very guard-oriented team. They're very skilled. They have a lot of kids back from a team that won 23 games. They not only have a lot of guards, but they have experienced guards. That's a good combination for them to start the season and a concern for us. That's where we don't have experience, in the guard corps...." (when asked about if they showed everything in the scrimmage) "We just didn't want to do it. The good thing about Cylone-TV is: we get a lot of attention. The bad thing is, South Dakota can watch that game. We can't get ANYTHING on them. We're watching film from last year, ... watching film from two years ago, because they had kids who redshirted last year. It was by design not to show a whole lot. [...] That's kind-of an odd advantage of the first game. Your scouting is based mainly on personnel, not plays. Hell, our kids don't know our plays, let alone the other guy's plays!" "If you look at South Dakota, they're really good off the bounce. They do a lot of one-on-one, spread you out, just put your head down and go. They shoot the 3 like crazy. They all shoot it. You gotta chase them off the 3-point line. But as soon as you do that, you have to be careful - We're a pretty good free-throw shooting team, third in the nation. Well they were first! They're very skilled. And they've been there, done that. [...] usually your home opener is ... I don't want to say EASY, but, (besides the time we played Iowa) this is the toughest opener we have had. We're playing a good team. an experienced team. They had Iowa on the ropes in the NIT last year. You have a 6th-year kid. You have a 5th-year senior. For us, its: Keep them in front of us, chase them off the 3-point line, and try not to foul them. We're usually a team that doesn't foul much, but early in the season the refs tend to call more fouls. So we gotta be careful, be smart, and keep our hands off of them. Make them earn points. If you put them at the free-throw line, they're not gonna miss them."
