The 2-1 Coyotes host Grambling State (0-2) Saturday night. FB season ticket holders get in to the game for half price. ESPN's Matchup Predictor gives USD a 93.8% chance of winning, so there is that.
Grambling is certainly not TCU, but it is still hard to know what exactly Grambling is. They have been blown out by VCU and lost a pretty close one (11 points) at Iowa. Obviously that is solid competition. There were up 3 halfway through the 2nd half at Iowa (game was Thursday night). They appear to be balanced scoring and shoot/make a bunch of 3's.
Of note to watch from the Yotes: - How do they rebound from dropping a game they could have (should have?) lost against a fringe top-25 team? - Who will step up to score outside of Mooney/Hags? - What % of the adult fans in the stands will have high blood alcohol levels after the State/U FB game in the afternoon?

I don't think the Coyotes will have any hangover at all from the TCU game. I actually think they will gain confidence from it. Now if they had lost to a team like Bowling Green that would be different but after about 10 minutes after the game I am sure coach Smith had the guys feeling pretty good about themselves and they should.

USD won. By a lot. I can't believe Grambling hung with Iowa.

I kind of had a good feeling about this game in warm ups. Grambling was struggling to make 50% of their warm up dunks. It seemed like being flashy was goal number 1 for them and whether they won or not was secondary. The Coyotes played really well tonight which is a carryover from the TCU game where they also played very well. The Coyotes are WAY, WAY ahead this year as to where they were a year ago. I know that seems obvious but these guys have a sense of purpose about them that is very encouraging.
It would have been nice if more people would have come over after the football game. There were maybe 1500 people there but you would think with the football game that a good number of fans would have wanted to catch both games. Sitting in that arena watching the basketball team kick some tail took some of the hurt away from the afternoon.
Hagedorn has improved so much from mid season last year till present. He is a multi dimensional player that basically now does it all and his defense is getting better and better. Tyler Peterson is one of those guys that you cannot appreciate enough. He is a smart player and someone that may have some open looks with teams guarding Mooney and Hagedorn first. There are guys that just have a knack for the game and he is one of them. Mooney had to go to the bench with 4 fouls early in the 2nd half and from that point on the Coyotes just kind of ran away with the game. No Mooney, No Problem. Kind of like the song "More Money, More Problems". The Coyotes handled Grambling much better than Iowa did. I think we need the Hawkeyes to come to the SCSC so we can pay them back and kick their butts.
These guys are really buying in and it is nice to see.

From the box score, it looks like a bunch of guys played with a bunch of productive minutes. We will need that depth against Mount Marty on Monday

Turns out Umude is not redshirting. The 2 minutes he got last night were his first of the year.

Turns out Umude is not redshirting. The 2 minutes he got last night were his first of the year. Coach Smith talked about it after the game in his interview with JVG. Said that Umude was on the fence about redshirting during the end of one of the previous games, but after that decided that he wanted to play this year. Had a nice drive to the hoop for a score. Looks to be very athletic.

I am actually glad that Umude is not red shirting. The Coyotes recruiting is going to continue to be at least as good if not better going forward assuming Smith stays on board for awhile. I would rather have a little too much depth then a bit too little. Since he is going to play I would rather see him get decent minutes to see what he has especially in games where the Coyotes would be considered double digit favorites. With the Pentagon classic coming up next weekend it might not hurt to see him help take some of those minutes to keep some of the other guys fresh. The Coyotes have 3 games in 3 days with the third leg being an afternoon game. Having him will not hurt. I would think the Coyotes will be at least slight favorites if not heavy favorites in the games in Sioux Falls against Youngstown State, N Colorado and S Mississippi.

Wasn't Umunde in a walking boot 3 or 4 weeks ago? That probably slowed his development a bit at the start of the season. Could play a good role a month or so from now when he gets up to full speed.

It would have been nice if more people would have come over after the football game. There were maybe 1500 people there... 2054 was the official number, which was just below our season average from last year, and pretty darn good for a non-marquis non-conference game IMHO. Can we do better? Sure! No reason to call anyone out, or under-estimate the attendance, though. Right, I forgot, you consistently assume that any USD sporting event will over-report attendance. I think a good rule-of-thumb with you would be to add between 1/4 and 1/3 to your estimate to get the actual number. For example: Basketball Game: CF says 1500 x 1.33 = 1995 (actual was 2,054) Football Average Attendance: CF says 7,400 x 1.25 = 9,250 (actual was 9,347- highest in many years)

I don't know why people are questioning my figures for football attendance. It's not like I am making some type of guess. I projected some of my total capacity but if any I over estimated, not under estimated. I counted the seats so what else more does anyone want. The Dakotadome does not hold enough people for it to average over 9,000 per game, even in paid attendance. Do you trust what the athletic department reports (which is inflated) or do you trust someone that actually counted the seats. I guess that is up to you. I do not believe there was 2054 in attendance at the SCSC and my original post did not state how many seats were paid for but how many people were actually there. There were many people in section 106 but even so there were probably still a third of the seats without bodies in them. Many sections barely had anyone in them. The paid attendance may have been 2054 but many season tickets holders were not there or anyone else that had pre paid for a ticket.
For the Dakotadome to have a capacity of over 9K there would have to be at least a thousand people standing on the sidelines or by the end zones for it to reach that number.

Do you trust what the athletic department reports (which is inflated) And yet you always take the official count of our opponents (See Nicholls State) at face value without question. Its fine to be a skeptic, but at least be consistently skeptical of all attendance counts, instead of consistently negative about your own school.

When I reported the attendance for Nichols State I actually was thinking about whether they inflate their numbers I just didn't happen to mention that.
