Not a great career move, IMHO. Herm is going to fail spectacularly.

I also agree that the Herm Edwards hire was a head scratcher. Watching his introductory press conference and it was awkward. The silver lining for WIU is that since Fischer isn't taking another HC job they should retain all of their assistants and will probably promote from within.

Not a smart move. Herm is going to destroy ASU. Feel really bad for those kids. Hopefully some get let out of their LOI's.

I just hope they hire a new coach quickly they have a few in house candidates who most WIU fans I think would be pleased with in fact its rumored that our Co Offensive coordinator interviewed for the Tennessee Tech job in Doug Malone.

Western needs to find a way to keep Fischer. He is the right fit. Western needs to find a few more $ and make a sincere and enticing counter offer.
I guess I'm not really that upset or disappointed. I'm just surprised, I guess I thought He really liked what he was doing here in Macomb putting his stamp on a program. Doing things his way. If he's just going to be a position coach at ASU why did he come to WESTERN to begin with he's been a position coach for P-5 programs already. Side note 300k in Macomb will get you a Mansion. 300k in Tempe will get you a very modest living arrangement (very). Headed out their next week incidentally, well Mesa anyway.

So, not intimately involved with all things USD. Was this thing with Nielson and Kent State a ploy or ligit?
Compensation certainly enters into the equation. I think Kent State gets the prize for being the lamest MAC program, although, Miami is pretty bad, as is Bowling Green. Incidentally, how the heck did Eastern Michigan turn the corner? Having a weak FBS program 5 miles in proximity to a Power-5 is beyond bizarre. In what world do people go to EMU games, and who want's to play there? Seriously.

I've heard, from "people who know other people", that Nielson never intended to leave and that USD is his last coaching gig - he and his wife really like living in Vermillion. While this is all good news for Yote fans, nothing is ever "for certain" in the college coaching world (unless your head coach is Stig). I never did hear anything about Nielson's new contract... Anyone have any insight into that? Also, what is the word on Fisher? I can't find anything new on the internet about him staying at Western Ill or leaving for ASU.

I can believe that he never intended to leave USD. What would be harder to also believe is that he never intended to use Kent State as a way to get a larger and longer contract with USD. What I think probably happened is that someone that represents him probably put out a rumor that he had interest in the Kent State job, but than again there is certainly no guarantee that he didn't have interest.

Everything that led to Nielson coming here seemed to indicate he was looking for a good situation to finish his career. As you said plans can change though. The consensus was that Bohl would retire at NDSU but a million dollar salary has a way of influencing people. No idea what was or is going on with Fisher to Arizona State. They never introduced a different WR coach so it is still open for him to go. Wouldn't make any sense, given that he has already held such a position at a Power 5 and ASU is set up for a disaster with Herm, but it is open still. Maybe he leaves yet this offseason but definitely not for that job.
