As per Sam Herder at Herosports... herosports.com/fcs-football/predicting-every-2018-conference-champion-fcs-bzbzNow let's go prove him wrong!!! MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL North Dakota State – The Valley has a lot of question marks besides who’s the favorite to win the title. NDSU, on paper at least, appears to be a tier above the other teams. South Dakota State and South Dakota lose key offensive pieces. Illinois State and Youngstown State didn’t live up to expectations last year. And Northern Iowa and Western Illinois are always solid, but have been a step or two behind the Bison. Until some of these teams answer question marks surrounding them, the Bison are clear-cut favorites not only to win the MVFC, but the national title. A more detailed explanation on why can be found under No. 1 here.

Good read. Everybody seems to be picking the Bison and no doubt they are loaded. Several NFL quality players on the roster but other MVFC teams have NFL quality players too. Maybe they will start to believe what they read.
Another good link right after the article was about the 2019 draft. A number of MVFC players mentioned including Santiago from UND. The article looked ahead to the 2020 draft and SDSU had 2 players mentioned, one was the kicker.

I'm surprised Youngstown and Illinois State weren't all over this guy. He seems like their type of player.

I like at the end of that Article where it shows all the MVFC preseason rankings along with the final finishes.
Big Game Bob has over-performed his ranking for the last 4 years, and 4 of his 5 years coaching in the Valley. I like our chances to finish in the top 5, and making the playoff again.

Am I missing something on SDSU? I think they are completely overrated compared to the run they are getting on a national and conference level. I'm not saying this from a simple "hate everything State" perspective, I'm legitimately looking at their losses to graduation and don't see how they can be so highly rated, there are just too many question marks.

I concur with everything you are saying... but I am also "hate everything state". Am I missing something on SDSU? I'm not saying this from a simple "hate everything State" perspective, I'm legitimately looking at their losses to graduation and don't see how they can be so highly rated, there are just too many question marks. SDSU does have question marks but they do have some things going for them. Some people might just have them up there because they have been there and done that. 1) Special teams- They have an all conference kicker and kick returner on their team. 2) Defense- They do lose Soulik at DT (who was all conference) but they have their main players back after that. They probably have the best CB in the conference starting on one side and they have two other players that started 2 and 4 games on the other side. They return all 3 of their starting LB's. Their only loses on defense are their stud DT and two average safeties. I know that their defense wasn't all world last year but they should be better this season. Offense- Here are the main losses. You lose two receivers that are on NFL teams, your starting all-conference center and your left tackle. SDSU does have 4 players back that started on their offensive line last year. One of them started at LT as a true freshman. If all four of them stay healthy, they only need one other player to step in to start. They do need more than just their 5 starters but they have many options to find a couple of guys to step up. One of them went to Ohio State out of high school. After he left there he stopped at Cincinnati before coming to SDSU. If Ohio State wanted him, somebody must have saw something in him but will he pan out? Weinike and Goedart will be the big losses. I don't think SDSU has anybody as good as they were but now their receivers are smaller and quicker. Will they be able to play good enough to get by? I guess you could talk about their starting RB graduating but they played three RB's last year and I don't think their starter was any better then their #2 guy. This could be addition by subtraction. They have had running back by committee since Zenner left. I take that as they haven't had anybody that they miss too bad (when they leave) or the guys that they have on the bench are just as good as the guy that left.

I think 2-7 in the Valley will be a crap shoot. State will be good just like the last several years and be contending for the playoffs. I'm not sure if they are #3 in the country good, but we shall see.

State picked up a transfer from the University of Iowa today, starting safety Brandon Snyder. Iowa is doing Snyder a favor by trying to sell this as a grad transfer and like it had something to do with potential playing time. I think more of the story will come out later today. From the sounds of it, playing time wasn't going to be an issue. Snyder was going to be their starter. I won't be surprised if he brings his brother Jaden with him. Jaden was going to be a freshman for Iowa. USD and SDSU were both in his final 3 last year. He was a stud for West Lyon, IA, will probably be a LB in college.
