Oh, and Trimboli was her normal self off the bench again too. She is such a sweet player to have coming off the bench. Thanks for the info.

Arens kept the Yotes around offensively early as Duffy was scoreless in the first half. ORU went on a 13-2 run in the third to go up by double digits and USD went to almost a 2-1-2 look with Duffy in the middle. McKeever and Arens got really active defensively and made some big plays and Duffy had a couple of big buckets late. Great win. Arens and McKeever were probably the on the floor MVPs but I really thought the switch to the zone was the difference. Just a great strategic decision that totally changed the game. I agree, a gutsy win. And the difference I think was also the zone defense. Still, the biggest thing I'm worried about is that I'm still not sure we can win big games with McKeever taking so many shots (led the team in shots again with 12). It seems like teams are inviting her to shoot more. Good/smart teams seem to try to take away Bradley and Duffy because they are the best passer+scorers. That's what happened in the first half and we struggled, but we were able to overcome with the zone defense in the second half. I could be wrong on this, but would be interested to hear your thoughts on that cityleague. But what a win, these are what make great not just good teams. Another interesting stat and apparently smart coaching maneuver from Dawn is that the posts aren't playing as much lately and we are winning more (Liveringhouse with 12 minutes and Frederick with 2).

She just changes the whole dynamic of the game with matchups and such. No post player can guard her on the perimeter and no perimeter player can guard her in the post. Ditto this for Duffy and it creates some real defensive quandaries for opponents.

I tend to agree that McKeever's shot selection can be questionable at times but I don't know if that's something you're really going to totally eliminate in a kid who scored over 3,000 points in high school.
Plus, that aggressiveness is what makes her valuable at this level. You tamp it down and you're risking taking away what makes her good. I'm sure the coaching staff is kind of constantly looking for that balance with both McKeever and Arens between making the smart play and staying aggressive ... because their athleticism and determination are vital components to this team. At the end of the day you're going to have to live with some wild shots and drives into the teeth of the D and trust that it'll be outweighed by the good things they do.

I think it may just be my focus on winning the summit league tournament and beating SDSU that has me apprehensive, and our losses in that situation over the last 7 years or so. I agree that Arens and McKeever are valuable, and their style will make us a top 4 team in the summit, but I just think it's possibly a recipe for losing against the best teams/winning the league. If our goal is to win the league then I think we will have to rely (as El Coyote said above) more on Trimboli and Duffy and the matchups problems they bring. I also think we need to get more open shots for Bradley. But I hope I could be wrong about this and we win either way!

State is probably going to present problems for USD with their overall size off the bench on both ends. I'd imagine the starting match ups will go Alexander-McKeever, Arens-Miller, Guebert-Bradley, Duffy-Selland and Thompson-Liveringhouse. Duffy and Bradley/Arens (whoever Guebert is guarding) will have to play well offensively because those look like the two places (to me) where they can take advantage a bit of great offensive players who may not be quite as good on the other end.
And then you've got Trimboli doing her thing.
I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the South Dakota schools play three barnburners this year.

Then again, maybe Johnston agrees with you and puts Alexander (a great defender) on either Arens or Bradley and tries to coax McKeever into more shots by putting Guebert on her. I really have no idea but it's all interesting.
It's why I'm looking forward to next week's game between two really well-coached teams.

Very well said in regards to McKeever. She was 5-12 with 2 three pointers in there and she scored 14 points on 12 shots which isn't that bad. Her aggressiveness is a tone setter for the team and she had 5 steals today. Her defense is solid. The team has players that are really complimenting each other well right now. They have different skills and are meshing very nicely. After the Tulsa game if anyone would have told me the Coyotes would be 5-0 in the Summit with wins at WIU and ORU I would have thought they were quite a ways off their rocker. In the Women's game I would rather have shorter skilled players than taller clumsy players any day. I really like it when the team plays small and even when they do it is not like they are getting killed inside.

I just love Trimboli. I call her the junkyard dog of the team. MadMac might be the Bulldog but Jaz is the junkyard dog. She plays with attitude and toughness. She wants that ball when rebounding. She will fight you for it. She gives them an identity they could have lost when Bridget graduated.

Looks like our defense wasn't quite as stifling as normal (as a whole). From the sound of it, we made adjustments when it counted in the end. Maria Martianez played one hell of a game!

Late posting, but that was some comeback win on the road! 3-0 on the road, with a couple against top-half opponents. Nice work!
