**DISCLAIMER: POST MAY CONTAIN SWEAR WORDS** So corporate pushed us as a program away from doing previews and such so you won't see many of those. However, in regards to attendance we did post this today (a little off target but kind of relevant to this thread.) Although I do not disagree with the overall argument of the article, it is unfair to compare USD to the likes of Villanova or Duke. Duke/Nova have already been major programs for decades. The difference is that Duke/Nova has built a national fanbase completely surpassing just students and alumni. Fans who likely have had nothing to do with the schools their entire lives. Many of these fans are even willing to donate money to the schools. Speaking of donating, these schools have an alumni network that is FAR beyond anything USD has right now. If you wanted to compare USD to any school in the ACC, it should be Wake Forest, a school with an enrollment a couple thousand students smaller than USD's. However, Wake Forest averaged around 9,800 fans last season. Wake has nothing close to the type of fanbase that Nova/Duke has, yet its attendance average is still larger than the school itself. Why? Their location and alums. Wake Forest is located in Winston-Salem, a city of about 270,000 people. Winston-Salem is a part of what is called the 'Piedmont Triad.' The Triad consists of Winston, Greensboro (a little bigger than Winston), and High Point (about the size of Sioux City). The entire Triad metro area consists of around 1.6 million people. So with 1.6 million people, all Wake generates for basketball attendance is 9,800 fans (exception given to years they have someone like Tim Duncan or Chris Paul). Additionally, living in Winston for the past year, I have noticed more people wearing Duke/UNC shirts than Wake shirts (though I have no empirical evidence that there are more or less). Wake, being one of the lowest funded athletic programs in the ACC, still has an incredible alumni network. So why is this relevant? USD, with an enrollment of around 10,000, is located in a town of 10,000. Vermillion is an hour away from a city of 170,000 people (where many USD alums reside). Vermillion is 30 minutes away from Sioux City, where although there are many USD alums, Sioux City is not necessarily considered a haven for USD fandom. It is not just students, but many alums who have likely never even watched a game since leaving Vermillion (by way of not wanting to drive an hour to catch a game). Vermillion has to compete with SDSU, which is also an hour from Sioux Falls, and a school which also has many alums in Sioux Falls. With that said, USD/SDSU are also competing, regionally, against Iowa/Iowa State/Nebraska/Minnesota, all Power 5 schools. I 100% agree that there needs to be better attendance by way of students. A lot of blame should be geared toward students. Many classes generate 'die hard' fans (who ultimately end up here on proboards), but turning casual fans into die hards is difficult. However, students can't be the only ones to blame, they have the choice of going or not. It is up to outside factors to make the students feel they have no choice but to go. It starts with creating traditions, which includes winning. USD is experiencing new success right now, but have not necessarily established a tradition of winning yet (like in the D2 days). The adage 'if you win, they will come' applies here. Students, although given a beautiful arena in which to attend games, are not as excited as we believe they should be. The State/U game should not be the only sell out, and more can always be done to fill the arena. Essentially, the way to do this is for USD to attempt to become the "Witchita State" of the Summit (which probably sounds far-fetched). In short, it comes down to three things: 1. Alums willing to donate money 2. Winning 3. Tradition Apologies for the terribly long post. I am sure there will be some disagreement, and I welcome other perspectives.

To go off of the discussion in this thread, I went to the Duke/Wake Forest game last night in Winston-Salem. One thing I noticed that, to me, is a great way to keep fans (especially students) in the seats through the end of the game:
Wake has a sponsorship with Chic-Fil-A. They have what is called the "Fowl Shot." If an opposing player misses two consecutive free throws within the last 8 minutes of the game, every person in attendance gets a free chicken sandwich from Chic-Fil-A.
Not only does this get students to stick around so they can see whether or not they get to eat a delicious chicken sandwich for free, the place goes absolutely NUTS when the opposing player misses the first free throw and the entire place (save for opposing fans) joins to try and get the player to miss the second shot. Even Duke fans were (secretly) hoping Wendell Carter Jr. would have missed a second consecutive free throw.
The students stay engaged, and it creates even some excitement toward the end of the game if, overall, the game is not that exciting to begin with.
I don't know if USD would be able to mimic something like this, but I think something along these lines would be a great way to keep students from leaving at halftime.

I love the idea of promotions that involve all the fans. I was calling for a 100 point promo against the lower division teams, free food for everyone if USD scores 100.
OLC could do something involving boards. If a Yote gets 10 points and 10 boards everyone can get a discount or something. I'm just spitballing here but there's gotta be a great promo to be had with our local businesses.

I bet if someone asked the coaches they would have a good idea of a stat like that they would like to see as a promotion point. (I like the "fowl shots") Also, starving college students will do just about anything for free food. Remember ramen noodles, chef Boy-R-Dee, baloney sandwiches, Hee Haw pop, etc? Combining leftovers into strange bowls of mush? They'll do even more for beer, but I digress....

I am guessing they will announce a paid attendance of over 5,000 but there will probably be no more than 2,000 in attendance tonight. OK it was a joke, this is the game where there will actually be 5,000 heads at the game and would be hard to criticize attendance for the Yotes and Jacks. Now it's time to get more people on a game by game basis.

I'm moving away from South Dakota soon, feel like I should go to a game in Brookings before it is too inconvenient, and looking at tickets I am just laughing looking at their seating. Stated capacity is 6,500 at Frost. I counted, and their "bowl" only seats 895 (does not count students). That leaves roughly 4,000-4,500 to cram into the awful wooden bleachers up top. What a dump. I've been to Frost 4-5 times, for my sister's graduation and my own work as an intern at Daktronics. My brother-in-law, who is a state alum, says there aren't many places worse to watch a game. I'm inclined to believe him.

Didn't get to watch all of the WBB game, so I likely missed it, but it looked like there was about 7500 people in Frost, with about 20% of them wearing red. Do I have that right?

actually this thread is for announced attendance figures and doesn't say anything about estimated attendance figures so by the subject of this thread all announced attendance figures should go here. kiyote your original post should have gone here instead of the basketball thread.

Does anyone on this forum have a good relationship with someone in the coyote's athletic administration? If so, maybe you could ask them about how they report attendance. They might tell you and maybe you can report back here.
