Is there a timetable on this discussion and then the votes tallied or can it go on forever?? Just curious... Agreed. ^^^ On a related note, saw this in an article, and thought it applied to this conversation. CF isn't the only one who uses 'honesty' as a blanket to behave without consideration of how it can effect others (but he is the league leader). "Social media has taught the world it needs to have an opinion, on everything, at all times, and that this opinion must be delivered in a forthright way, so we seem assured, confident, smart. Reality television has taught us to celebrate meanness, so long as that meanness is delivered as “honesty” — an awful get-out clause designed by the truly rude so they can say truly rude things and then expect us all to applaud them for it." - Recent Time article time.com/5135513/rude-people-danny-wallace/

I think a downvote feature is the answer. Especially if enough downvotes automatically hides the post from public view, requiring one to click on the downvoted post to read its content. I think there is a potential negative that can come from down-voting in terms of a competitive and negative tone, or environment. However, OTOH, what could it hurt? We can always go back. It might be an interesting social experiment.

what a totally stupid idea for this downvoting thing. if 8 people don't want to read something and 4 people do why should the minority not have the option to read something. Is this becoming a communist board. if many people vote to not like a post and it comes down because of it does that is called cencorship. people have the right to read or not to read but having an opinion poll that can delete posts takes away the right of the minority to read what they want. An opinion poll for censorship is exactly what higher education would be against. is this board for inclusion or is it for exclusion.

The moderators have been discussing options.
One thing I can say is I don't have time to babysit, yes babysit, this board. Moderating is one thing but having to read through pissing matches like this, well, I am not going to do that. It's been getting pretty bad lately. We have received so many complaints recently and feedback from posters, now former posters, who just aren't going to contribute anymore because of what this place has turned into. It's turned into a place where instead of being about the sports, it's about the posters. This place is not going to be about the posters. When we've gotten to that point it's time to do something about it.
So here are the simple rules going forward. No offensive posts. No inappropriate posts. No inflammatory posts. This board is about discussing USD athletics, if posters derail threads/posts and make it about themselves, those posts will be considered inflammatory and there will be suspensions issued. Verbal sparring matches are going to happen, it's what happens when you debate. If the sparring goes on too long suspensions will be issued, and it will probably be both parties getting the penalty. Know the line, ladies and gentleman, and don't cross it.
Think of it this way, most of you have watched a hockey game. Two players start going at it, the referee will let one shot go, maybe a second, then it should be over and the players should move on and get back in the play. When it escalates beyond that and a player has to get that final whack with his stick in or one final jab, that's when penalties get called, and like most referees I'm probably going to send both of you to the box.
From now on, if the chippyness continues we're just going to start putting people in the box. 2 to 4 days for your first penalty should get you to cool down and think about your posting. Next offense and we're getting into misconduct territory, 10 days. Another one and we're looking at 30 days or more. The final one is a permaban.
There are some posters that have crossed the line in this thread. You will be hearing from me. A couple of days off to cool down may be coming. Just take it in stride and learn from it.
THIS THREAD IS NOW LOCKED.
