I have to say they do an outstanding job. One of the coolest things about USD is the accessibility to the school and athletic department. By accessibility I mean that the organization isn't so big and impersonal. Fans and alumni aren't just faceless consumers. A person can actually reach out and talk to somebody at the U and they will respond.
Case in point, today is Valentine's Day and the marketing department is running this promo where Charlie will deliver a Valentine's Day greeting to that special someone on campus. One phone call to USD marketing and Charlie, most graciously, said he would pay a visit to a local daycare. "No problem" was the response we got. Well, Charlie just visited that daycare and I just got some awesome pictures sent to me. The kids were so excited to have Charlie visit and he just made the day for one little girl who always talks about him. I will hear all about it tonight and I'm sure she'll never forget this day.
Thanks Charlie, and thanks USD!

I don't know how different this year is from past years in terms of how our marketing department, administration, fine arts and athletic departments have attempted to involve the incoming freshmen and "indoctrinate" them into a "Coyote culture". I have to say, though, that this video gives the impression that they are doing more this year. If true, I think that's awesome. Maybe this is what Coach Lee was alluding to earlier this year...
When I went to school in the mid-late 90's there was some of that, but I don't remember much. Mostly I remember focusing on D-Days, partying, women, fraternities, and school, with very little sports interest. I went to the football games because I was in the marching band, but never any other sports. The student fan culture needs to change, and I think it can with involvement from the athletes, and marketing that targets incoming freshmen (like we see in the video)
And for the record, the Charlie Shuffle is still cringeworthy. I like the effort, though, and as part of a larger push to get students there, they need effort and new ideas.
