I love the Winter Olympics. Get sucked into it every 4 years and it becomes about the only thing I will watch for a couple of weeks.
Last night was awesome, watching Shawn White nail it on his last run to win the Gold Medal. His first run was awesome and was severely underscored. Probably can't rate it too high and end the competition right there but it almost came back to bite White.
Anxious for some alpine skiing tonight, more curling, and men's ice hockey starting up.
Team USA men's hockey team stunk it up today already. Dominated the first half of the game just couldn't put the puck in the net. Got up 2-0 after two and then blew it in the 3rd period, losing 3-2 in OT to freaking Slovenia. Slovenia! This is not a good sign of things to come and Team USA better figure it out or they won't even make it to the medal round. I hate how USA Hockey constructed this team. I would have rather seen them go all young and send a team of college kids and just made a statement that if we're not sending NHLers we're giving the kids a chance and let them experience the Olympics. This team is some retired guys, AHL (NHL minor leagues), KHL (Russian professional league), and a couple of college players. No surprise that the college boys are the ones who stood out this morning. Would have loved to see an all-college squad.

I like the Olympics of both seasons because it allows me to appreciate certain sports that I don't pay much attention to otherwise. I thought the half pipe was pretty cool as well. Did you see the younger competitor that came down pretty much right on his backside from about 15 feet up. It will take him awhile to sit comfortably. Some people just can't stand curling but I love the strategic aspect of it. I would love to be in a curling league some day. Anyone could play. Hockey is about the only main sport that I watch outside of the Olympics that I also care about during the Olympics. I am looking forward to the downhill because of the risk these guys take on every edge of their ski.

Shout out to CF... I have some concerns that South Korea and the Olympic Committee are not announcing the correct attendance figures for the events that have already been run... They are just hurting themselves by not reporting the correct numbers... JK...

Okay, enough of that. Let's try to stay on topic.

I agree I gotta chuckle out of it to. The USOC is trying to work out a contract with me to investigate potential attendance fraud. :-)

Voice inflection doesn't come across the internet. I knew you were just joking, and my tone was more of an "okay, let's move on guys" than it was a harsh comeback. Keep in mind I just finished reviewing that other thread which was NOT fun, so I just didn't want anymore flare-ups in other threads.
Yeah, it was funny.

as a reminder the women's hockey team plays for gold against Canada tomorrow night and the men play the Czech republic tonight in the quarters.

It's a shame that elimination games are settled with a shootout. It's a team game, the team should decide who wins/loses, not a breakaway competition.

I agree that a shootout should not have to decide a game but on the other hand I wouldn't want a game going into 4 or 5 over times either because that would not be real fair to the team that advances and has to play 2 days later. I would go with the first 10 minutes as they do with a 4 on 4 but after that I would change to 3 on 3. In the NHL and USHL the 3 on 3 is really entertaining to watch and at least somewhat fair. Certainly more fair than a shootout.

Tonight turned even better as the U.S. Women's Hockey team came from behind in the 3rd period to force OT. The 20:00 4 on 4 ended without a goal and in the sudden death shootout round 6 the Americans scored a beautiful goal and the goalie barely stopped Canada to bring pandemonium to Team USA. The Canadians have won the past 4 gold medals but this year it was meant to be for the Red, White and Blue. Canada has been far from dominant but they always seem to score big goals in big moments. This time the celebration and gold medal goes to the home land.

That was a late night but worth it. Don't like shootouts. No reason for a gold medal to be decided by a shootout. Got bit with the shootout in the men's game, but were the beneficiaries in the women's.
Seriously, most hockey people hate shootouts determining games. In the regular season it is tolerated because teams are playing for points and they can't be going all night. It's a way to bring the game to a conclusion. But for playoff/elimination games, no way. In basketball terms, how would we feel if the SLT tournament championship game (men's or women's) was decided by a 5 minute OT followed by a free throw shooting contest? Basketball people would be upset about that.
Team USA has made it a rough 24 hours for America's Hat with the hockey women beating Canada for gold and the men's curling team knocking them out in the semifinals this morning. Hockey and curling are the sports the Canadians care about the most.

I remember when the announcer mentioned that the 4 on 4 would favor Canada and I totally disagreed at the time. As it turned out the Americans had the edge if not dominated the Canadians in that OT. I thought the Canadians were lucky that it went to a shootout but luckily that didn't help them either. I cannot believe an American Curling team is playing for gold. That never seems to happen.

FWIW, I turned on the Olympics just now instead of MBB on ESPN because the Olympics (!!) seemed less seedy/corrupt. Go figure.

The United State Men's Curling team has won gold. That is unbelievable. They are so over matched that they might want to call this the "Miracle on Ice Part Deuce".
