Has anyone else heard the rumor going around campus that Matt Mooney is graduate transferring to Illinois? I thought he liked to win. That place is a train wreck.

I’d say no way. Zero benefit to transfer there. Unfinished business here. Could be a rumor started to create panic to do everything to save smith and staff.

I doubt he would leave USD for a worse team, even if it is Big Ten and his home state.

If Smith does leave I'd expect to hear a lot of these players are transferring rumors.
A lot of times these rumors start from assistants lobbying so they can take over or if you don't keep it in house the sky will fall and every player will transfer.
I don't think anyone will transfer whether its in house hire or if Herbster looks external. These players know how close they are and have to feel like they have unfinished business.
None of the players left when TJ took over at SDSU.....Why because they knew how good they would be and what they had a chance to accomplish.
I will say I'm not concerned about Mooney or any current player leaving. Now your incoming recruits could be debatable if Herbster decides to go external. Fakira for example could become a question mark unless you hire someone with Australian ties. But for Right now Herbster has been spot on in every hire.

He'd be better off transferring to Illinois State than Illinois

An administration cannot make a hire based upon any kind of a fear. If needed Herbster needs to hire the best guy for the job period. If that risks players leaving than that is on the players not on Herbster.

Holy smokes, write it down, I am in 100% agreement with CF. If players want to leave, then leave. It frees up a scholarship and a spot for the new guy to fill with his own guys.
If the players want to stay and finish what they started then I am totally behind them and I'm sure Herbster will bring in a great coach that will help them achieve their goals. This team is ready made to make a run at the NCAAs, that has to be attractive to any prospective coach.

We need to get to the level of the Women's program. We are now to a point with them that it seems like any warm body can win at USD. If the men can get to that point and coaches know of the successes of the past coaches that is going to really attract good future candidates. If for whatever reason Dawn were to leave (which I obviously don't want to happen) imagine the women's basketball coaches lines up at the door for an interview. Especially coaches that will tune in to watch the atmosphere at the SCSC that they will see today.

“Matt Mooney wishes Smith all the best...No further comment coming from USD players until a hire is made....” Mick makes it sound as if Mooney won’t be following Smith to Logan at least. t.co/9xYpyQsBkB

I'm guessing this is the tweet you were referencing. Your link goes to the Argus article. * edit: the article has the same quote, oops.
Something interesting from that article, though, was Herbster referencing the Final Four with the coaching search. I'm not quite sure what to make of it.

There is usually a coaching convention during the Final Four and it turns into a hiring fair at the same time.

A lot of the coaches in the NCAA make the pilgrimage each year to the Final Four. Not surprising that conversations would happen this weekend with the concentration of coaches gathered there.

I would assume nothing more than the fact that there are a lot of coaches who attend the Final Four. Much like anyone involved with the NFL is around for the Super Bowl. But who knows, maybe he entices someone like Jon Scheyer from Duke haha

The National Association of Basketball Coaches annual convention is held during the Final Four. Much like the annual AFCA convention, it usually is the epicenter for networking, interviews, and new hires in the college coaching profession.
