I would not hold any sort of ill will towards Mooney if he makes the choice to leave USD. The basketball program will still be battling for the top spot in the Summit with or without him. There will be other players that step up and get opportunities to score. Will they be the talent Matt was...no but, a couple players can replace his 18 points a game.
That being said, if I'm close to Mooney I'm letting him explore the options but, strongly encouraging him to stay.
He's familiar with what he's been facing in the Summit as far as defenses go...scoring against a defense from a power 5 conference school is not going to be nearly as easy when an overwhelming majority of your games are played against a bigger, faster, stronger and more talented defender. A drop-off in offensive performance your final year suddenly makes you look a little less dominant. Playing as a guard on a power 5 team means you're, theoretically anyway, surrounded by more athletic and talented team mates...teammates that may have played their entire career at that school. The offense is less likely to go through a grad transfer than it is a senior that's a program favorite. Some of the media covering power 5 schools can be unrelenting...i live in the Omaha Metro and trust me...they can be brutal on not only coaches but, players as well. Looking back on the humility Mooney showed after the loss to SDSU how does he react to an over-critical media if they start piling on after a bad game or 2? That's not something you're going to face in the SD. The opportunity to to be the marketing star for an entire mid-major conference...that exists for him at USD. With hard work he can win the league MVP, he can win the tournament MVP and he can make a huge contribution in the NCAA tournament. The are no guarantees here, or there for that matter. The media spot light shines on the underdog especially when it's a good story. Last year we had a point guard transfer to Georgetown...one of the most historically successful basketball programs in the country...how many times do you think Georgetown fans heard about Trey this year? How about outside of their market?
There's a time to go and a time to stay for everyone...Coach Smith waited one more year and if he had left for Drake he doesn't get the Utah State job. If Mooney stays he'll be the star of the Summit League...that's a certainty. SDSU has shit the bed in the NCAA tournament the last couple years and the Summit will be cheering for us to make it. The grass is not always greener and you should think long and hard about walking away from a chance to be a legend.
My 2 cents.

No one is taking over his star of the summit league regardless of stats

No one is taking over his star of the summit league regardless of stats I think Daum is also a great player...and the league has done a great job of promoting him in the past but, they haven't gotten much out of it. I believe if Mooney comes back, combined with our knew coach, USD is the better story next season. Mooney is a more marketable personality than Daum and people like new stories.

Arizona St, Oregon, Iowa St, Texas Tech, Creighton, Nebraska, Indiana, Virginia, Arizona, Memphis,TCU, Northwestern, Missouri have all reached out to Mooney Matt meets with Iowa St today. Creighton and Memphis tomorrow. Indiana, Texas Tech, and Northwestern on Sunday. Goodman is saying Mooney might end up being most coveted grad transfer in the country. If Mooney has a list like that reaching out to him (with about 1/10th of the hype/media attention Daum has gotten the past few seasons), kind of makes you wonder what Daum must be thinking right now.

Daum is contempt at sdsu and I believe he will stay. I do think it will hurt his draft stock some by not proving he can beat P5/NBA players every night, but I commend him for his loyalty. Who knows what his plans are after school, I would think he is going to try the NBA. Things may have been different if TJ would be coming in this year as Daum would be a grad transfer with immediate playing time vs. last year he would have had to sit out.
I disagree with Daum not being marketable, there were 10x the articles on him vs Mooney. Daum was also the best player in the SL, Mooney was clearly #2.
I don't know what Matt will do, I think he could lead the Yotes to the NCAA's next year and he knows he could be the star player here, vs. a role player elsewhere. It's his life and I will be disappointed if he going, but not angry. I do think the Yotes will be a great team with or without MM, but I'll hold my thoughts on that until I see how this shakes out.

He won’t be a role player somewhere else he will be a main contributor. He is very good and that’s why those schools are reaching out.

I think you misread my post. Or I wasn't clear enough. My point was that Daum has gotten about 10 times as much attention as Mooney, so you would think even more (or even bigger/more highly regarded) schools would be interested in him if he were to grad transfer. Also, I don't believe that impressive list of schools would be reaching out to Matt if all they were looking for was a role player. My guess is he may not be THE star player at these bigger schools, but I doubt he will be a guy chipping in 6 to 10 points per game off the bench. My guess is that at least a few of those coaches see him as a key player, not a role player.

We've seen what he can do against power conference schools. Now imagine how much more effective he would be with a supporting cast that takes pressure off of him. If he isn't starting at the mentioned schools then he is at least their 6th man.

He had very poor body language from what I saw on TV. I'm pretty sure he sat a lot of the second half at UCLA as well when the Yotes mounted their comeback

Not impressive. Against UCLA he was playing very well but no one else was. Some call bothered him and he drew a tech, then our bench players started shooting out of their minds. Finished 10/18 with 23 points in 28 minutes. In the TCU game he went 12/22 with 31 points.

It is really impressive the schools that have already come to visit and the schools that have visits scheduled.

Rabbit fans seem more interested in Mooney's potential transfer than anyone else.
