Today should be a national holiday to encourage everyone to get out and vote. I'd happily trade for Columbus Day.

Saw a really sad thing today: went up to Sioux Falls so I could take my 90 year old mom to vote. While I was there a group of senior citizens came in on a minibus from what I assumed was another senior center. One old guy wasn't allowed to vote because he didn't have a picture ID. He said his kids had taken his drivers's license away from him which, in my observation, was probably the right call as he was quite elderly. I eavesdropped, and his name was on the voting registrar and he did have other cards on him, what they were I have no idea, but the workers said no picture, no ballot. They weren't rude by any means and were even somewhat sympathetic and I know they were just doing their jobs, but, still, it was sad. Poor guy was really upset and just couldn't understand why because as he kept saying, "I've always voted before" in a quavering voice. I think everyone who witnessed the ordeal felt terrible for him. Lots of parties responsible here: his family, the senior center where he lives as well as laws that seem to make voting as difficult as possible. (editorial note: I think all the talk about widespread voter fraud is crap, especially in this state) The percentage of people who do vote is this country is an embarrassment, but then again, we seem to make it as difficult as possible. I like Australia's model where election day is a federal holiday and a citizen is issued a citation and fined if they don't vote. I could go on and on, but this isn't AP government class and most of you are probably asleep already. Any Questions?

If we made voting mandatory it would be too much work for politicians to appeal to everyone. Much easier to do what we can to limit voting and campaign towards those most likely to vote.
I have zero faith in our elected officials in case anyone's wondering.

I really wonder why senior centers don't just assist their members in getting an absentee ballot instead of going to the polls. Going to the polling station stinks. I have to work, kids, their activities, busy life. In 2016 I went to the polls before work and it caused me to be late for work. I went absentee this year and will be doing it that way from here on out.

Unfortunate situation with the elderly man not being able to vote. Is the fault of his kids. I absolutely believe in having a picture I'd to vote! Try getting on a plane without one, cashing a check, opening an account, etc. Absolutely necessary in today's society. And they are easily available. Those saying it's voter suppression are wrong.
There needs to be control. Unless you favor what longtime Democratic mayor of Chicago Richard Dailey said "vote early and vote often"!

I don't want this thread to careen into a political debate. Please limit discussion to voting turnout rather than voter fraud/voter suppression, which are partisan and contentious issues. Maybe I shouldn't have started this thread in the first place. Mods, feel free to end it if necessary.

I think many do; they did where my mom lives, but she had a medical appointment the day when officials came to help the seniors so that's why I took her to vote. People who work in senior living facilities have a lot on their plates in places that are often short staffed. For the most part those workers are angels.

Almost 63% turnout in SD! That is better than recent years, but not a record. The Governor's race in 1986 between G. Mickelson and Lars Herseth was a similarly close race, and produced over a 70% turnout (of eligible voters).
