My son is 12 and is on the fence about going out this year. Just wondering if there is a concensus about the "too old" age.
And as a follow-up question: What is the biggest difference you have noticed between Halloween today compared to when you were a kid?

I think I remember stopping trick-or-treating in Jr. High (7th grade), but I remember a few kids in High School still going out, especially girls. They seemed to be less self-conscious about it, and would go in groups.
Differences between the eighties and today: Parents only accompanied the very small children. most kids were on their own, which was a lot of fun until you ran into a "candy thief" type bully. Also the costumes were less sophisticated. Bed sheet ghosts and hobos were easy, and cheap costumes. My family only rarely "bought" a costume at the store. Too expensive for a one-time use. Also the fact that "slutty" costumes have become so mainstream that you are starting to see younger and younger girls wearing them. On an adult, I can't say that I mind them too much. On a kid, not cool.

I think the last time I celebrated Halloween like a child was the 7th grade. Went with my best friend at the time. This would have been about 2003 I think. I'm not sure that I felt too old to be trick-or-treating. We definitely got bored rather quickly though and went back to his place to play video games all night. His mom was not happy to see us still awake when she got up in the morning.
Were adults so interested in Halloween 15 years ago? That might be the biggest change I've seen since I was a kid, but it might be a product of me having greater awareness now. The slutty _________ has been around for a long time. I might note that the costumes you can get have gotten more niche. I saw one online the other day of someone dressed as a drinking straw. Is there some reference I'm missing here?
