This is actually an interesting topic, because of the history of eggnog as part of American history.
Initially in England, this drink was only for the rich, because the ingredients were eggs-spensive (farmers did not own their own land, nor the products of it). The typical spirit used at that time was brandy, or another fortified wine like Sherry or Port.
In the Colonies, farmers owned their land, and milk and eggs were cheap and plentiful. Wine was taxed heavily, but rum was very cheap. Rum-spiked eggnog became very popular in colonial times.
After the Revolutionary war, Rum was taxed heavily by England (spiteful), but the drink was still popular. They just switched to their domestically-made products: Whiskies and moonshines. Bourbon came to be the most popular for the drink.
So there you have it. Multiple "traditional" ingredients for a drink that is distinctively part of American history.
...And some of you probably still hate it. Try some spiked nog this season if you get the chance, and get back you your roots!

I think the only eggnog I've ever had is Tom and Jerry's. Used to get them every Christmas Eve at Wiebelhaus Recreation in Crofton. So I guess I'll vote for rum.

Good poll question, and thanks for the historical info kiyoat.
I voted Bourbon, because I knew my favorite had Bourbon, but then I checked the label and it has Bourbon, Brandy, and blended Whiskey. Now I know why it's my favorite!

Eggnog is gross. Why ruin perfectly good booze by mixing it with that disgusting sludge?

Voted for brandy. Make Tom & Jerry's with brandy too.

I love eggnog, but have never had freshly made. Just the pre-mixed stuff with a few unpronounceable ingredients. Might have to try making a batch...

With the mere mention of Clark Griswald, fellow poster Cousin Eddie might have something to say, maybe. Personally, I think with Tom & Yerrys (sorry, it's the Yogi Jorgensen in me I guess), you simply must have brandy or rum. As for eggnog, booze is optional. In any event, you folks living east river, you might want to stock up on either or both if you can. A storm is headed your way. It's been snowing here the past few hours. Stay warm and hydrated, friends. We don't want anybody cramping up.

After seeing this poll I tried a combination of brandy and rum in my T&J and egg nog over the holidays. Like both of them together. It adds another level of complexity to the drink.
