Your thoughts?
Personally, having attended the school in the late 90's, the "SCSC" just reminds me of the "CSC" and doesn't ring well, IMO. Nicknames, like any tradition, can't be forced of course. Better if it comes about organically... but I don't care for Corporate purchased names, either. Like the "Old Armory" wasn't sponsored by a company called the Old Armory, for example.

A friend of mine came up with "The Hen House", i.e. a place you don't want to be dealing with Coyotes in....

Is "Why Can't There Be A South Or West Entrance For Winter Months Building" an option? Can be WCTBASOWEFWMB for short.

Is "Why Can't There Be A South Or West Entrance For Winter Months Building" an option? Can be WCTBASOWEFWMB for short. I don't know the logistics involved, but in my experience architects often design interiors very well, balancing form and function, facility and user needs, visitor experience, etc... but ... often pay much less attention to how the building functions in the context of the site. (Site Planning) Vehicle and pedestrian circulation are more of a Landscape Architect's and Engineer's focus, and they are better at it. LA's and PE's are often not consulted for site planning, though, since that is an area of overlap with architects, and typically Architects are the lead, or primary contractor for the design. In the case of the SCSC, knowing where people park and where they are forced to enter the building was obviously not a priority. Take the Sanford Pentagon, for example. There is a very obvious, and well-designed visitor experience. Starting at the main entrance, and progressing through the building. It's beautiful. Unfortunately, the Architect valued forcing that experience over other important factors, like vehicular and pedestrian circulation. There is no parking in the front of the building. No drop off there either. The side entrance that is kind-of close to the handicapped parking in the rear is a "VIP" entrance, so if I want to drop my elderly father off at the front door that just isn't an option. We have to walk a good distance. I assume that the architect thought providing parking in front of the building would be ugly, and detracted from the architecture. I don't disagree with that, but at least provide a drop-off. JMO

And on a related note, how many of you know that the original design of the SCSC was to have the court level with the football field? It would have been a similar feel to "The Pit" that New Mexico plays in. Would have been really cool, IMO.
They decided to nix that plan due to the savings of not excavating it. No idea how much they saved, but to me it was a missed opportunity. I think the low ceiling is part of the result of the design revision. That's kind-of unique too. It probably affects the acoustics and feel. Maybe the temperature, too. It might be hotter in there when its full of fans.
Fun fact of the day...

The original design was scrapped because the water table was too high.

The original design was scrapped because the water table was too high. Gotcha. My sources mentioned cost being the major factor, but the answer might be "both" I'll check with them again... Wouldn't the water table for the arena be the same as for the dome? There are already sump pumps being used (for decades) to keep the dome dry. Unless the arena is sitting right on top of a spring. I could see different soils, but you would think the water table would be the same as the dome.

with only 7 votes in, there is a clear favorite...
I've always liked "The Den" as well, but I remember some poster(s) saying it couldn't be a nickname for the SCSC because it belonged to the old Volleyball court.... Somehow I don't think the Volleyball team would mind at this point. The old "Den" will be demolished this year.

some images of "The Den" I don't know how long the team played there, but before that they were set up like the basketball teams in the Dome, from what I understand. The capacity was 300 or 400 in The Den... My guess is that the new digs have helped recruiting...

I have kind of grown used to SCSC, but another option might be The Abbott, since the court is now names the James & Colette Abbott court. I don't care for the Den. The Red Square is synonymous with Russia.

I still just refer to it as “The Arena”. SCSC works in text as an abbreviation but I feel like a dork saying it out loud.
