I think fans of both schools are going to have to get used to the fact that the days of coaches like Boots and Nagy as fixtures are long gone. Both of us are in the upwardly mobile sweet spot for ambitious, young coaches looking to climb the ladder. The bunnies have the old guard in wbb and fb now, but that's unique and will probably end when their times come to a close as well. The bright side is that usually means that your programs are having success.

That was quick. SDSU has already named assistant Eric Henderson their as new head coach. Probably a smart move in that this might be the best way to keep any player defections to a minimum.

Let’s hope staying in house works for them about as well as it did for us even though Billy was gone For a year it was pretty close to an in house hire.

Unfortunately I do think this is a good move for SDSU. I was hoping for a prolonged search and hire someone with no ties to the team and they would lose a bunch of recruits and current players in the process. It seems that the team and incoming recruits are excited about this Henderson guy. I think he will be able to steady the ship. I would really like it if they lost their big time recruit, Grill I think, but I don't think that's going to happen now.

Yeah, I'm going to guess by the speed of the hire that either: 1. Sell had this in the works for a while, knowing TJ was possibly/likely going to leave. 2. Sell acted quickly to salvage any roster defections, or assistant coach defections. Either way, Sell acted quickly and decisively. Continuity hire. Definitely has its pluses and minuses. If they are able to hold on to their star player/ recruit, then it will have been a big plus. Another plus is that as a no-name hire, he isn't likely to leave after three years. Even if they have success. I'd guess this guy will be there for at least 4 or 5 years, win or lose. On the other hand, Henderson is a first time head coach. Hopefully for them he is the real deal, and can coach and recruit at a championship level. If not, maybe they shouldn't have played it so safe. Brookings IS an attractive job, so it's not like they would have had to scrape the barrel to attract coaches there. Could be a missed opportunity, who knows? I don't think Otz was there long enough for us to really say he was an outstanding coach or recruiter. He might be. We will see how he does in a big boy conference. Just like Coach Smith. Personally I question his schemes and in-game coaching a little, but with the talent he was working with he won a lot anyway. He also scheduled very weak. He only played a handful of power conference teams, and never scored an upset. Defense was never a forte with him, and he tended to keep starters in for long minutes, even in blowouts. He DID score on a couple of outstanding recruits in three years, so I guess you give him props for that. I'm not sure how stocked the cupboards are outside of those two, though. I guess we will find out.

With Tim Miles on the market I am kind of surprised by this. Maybe a phone call was made to him, maybe not, don't know. All I can say is I am glad Miles isn't in Brookings.

Miles without Smith has not seemed like a coach to be feared.

I doubt that Miles is looking for a $2 million pay decrease either.

I doubt that Miles is looking for a $2 million pay decrease either. Not necessarily. It would be Bo Pelini situation. Nebraska is still on the hook for paying his contract.

Uh oh... and so it begins... Looks like I'll be making a schadenfreude visit to their board (the only reason why I'll ever visit). From my visit, I haven't even made it to the Grill decommit. I keep seeing a strong loyalty to Sell's decision on a replacement, no matter who it is. Who exactly has he hired? A guy that USD passed on and didn't elevate their program, and.....? I'm always enamored by the delusion I see on that board. Whole lot of people with vocal opinions who have no idea.

AD Sell is similar to Herbster in that they both have made excellent hires when jobs were open. He no doubt weighed the possibility of this very scenario happening when making the decision to quickly hire from within in an effort to maintain continuity and keep current players and recruits together. However, if this continues to go south and they end up losing Jenkins as well, you have to wonder if the new coach Henderson would still be the selection if a full national search were to take place.
Only time will tell.

Only time will tell. Herbster hired a football, WBB, and 2 MBB coaches. The jury on Lee is out after 1 season, but the other three hires took each program to their highest points thus far. Sell has 1 MBB hire to his name, who at best kept the status quo with another coach's players, and it happens to be a guy USD passed on (great hire nevertheless). I don't get the hype for Sell.

I my opinion, Herbster has done many very good things for USD, the least of these things is the hiring of the coaches. He has elevated the Athletic Department. Thanks Mr. Herbster.
P.S. For those wondering... I do work for the University and am not a relative. LOL!!!
