I've noticed a lot of NCAA WBB players the last couple of years modifying their shorts to hike them up in various ways. (including our own Lamb, Duffy, Kunzer and some others) I never understood the reason for it, but when I saw Sofie Cunningham from Missouri with her very unique way of tucking her shorts up, I started to wonder if this was a trend.
I came across this article (a couple of years old) from USA Today that was speculating about an overall change in trend to shorter basketball shorts. I thought it was interesting, and wondered if anyone had an opinion.
bullet points:
1. the only reason long baggy shorts have become standard is for fashion reasons, led by MJ and Michigan's Fab 5 in the early 90's. Basically bringing street fashion of the times on the court because it looked cool. There is no competitive advantage to long baggy shorts in basketball.
2. If fashion trends brought it to the court, the same could trend it away.
3. Many influential players are starting to prefer shorter shorts for comfort reasons, including prominent NBA players
4. Many players over the years have had to "self modify" ill-fitting shorts either because of size or preference.
5. For whatever reason, more women than men in basketball are modifying their shorts through rolling waitbands, tucking the edges up, etc.
My take: Surely there is enough money in NCAA budgets (and NBA of course) to have custom-fit uniforms for those that want/need them? There aren't any rules about short length in either place, so who cares if some players choose longer or shorter shorts? I think it's silly that we are forcing players to do their own "modifications" rather than just letting them play it the way that is most comfortable to them.
I mean, I understand the rules related to uniform color and accessory color (shirts and sleeves have to all be the same color on a team). There are practical reasons for that. But short length? Who cares?
