Good point. How about the SDSU game last night. Does the NIT pay a share to the Summit? It is my understanding that the NIT reimburses participating schools for travel expenses, and they also get a share of the profits, once expenses are determined. This is based on # games played, like the NCAAs, but the amount is far smaller. Another distinction is that it is a one-time payment, and is NOT shared with other conference members. So it only benefits SDSU this year. Apparently host-schools also get a % of gate revenue. This is different than the WNIT, where the host gets to keep all gate revenue, but must pay a "bid" for the privilege of hosting. Most schools will lose money on the bids, but the pooled bid money gets re-distributed for all the teams's travel expenses reimbursement. I don't think Texas turned a profit off the gate last night. There might have been 50 people in the stands that were not cheerleaders or in the band. That place was empty.

Our WNIT crowds in Verm looked like the Super Bowl in comparison. We should be proud the way we support things around here. My guess is that if the game was in Brookings there would have been 10 times as many in attendance. Sad when a school like Texas shows that pathetic of support and it's really a shame that the NIT can't do something to prevent that from happening.

I’d day more than 50, but I get your point. The expansive stadium doesn’t help the perception:
Texas averaged 9,182 for home games this year. The box score said 1,739. (19% of average attendance) I was gonna guess 1,000 to 1,500 based on that picture. Obviously pretty sad given the number of Texas basketball fans. That stadium holds 16,540 for basketball...

I'll give Brookings credit, they would have dang near sold out Frost for that game.

I'd say that's pretty typical of P-5 programs, though. If it aint' the Big Dance it's a colossal failure. They are just so let down by an NIT appearance the fans (and team in some cases) fail to show up. Look at the Clemson fan board that coyotecrazie5 linked in the Women's NCAA thread. You can't find the Clemson women's basketball thread on that Clemson site anymore because it is buried by 3 or 4 pages of crying and whining about the humiliation of their men's team having to play in the NIT. And to be fair, we didn't show up well for the men's CBI appearance last year. Fans or team. It felt like Coach Smith either had one foot out the door, or was too deflated by the SLT loss and NIT snub to fire up his team. That's not saying Smith is a bad coach, just that he is an emotion-driven coach, and he wanted that championship for his guys so much that it destroyed him. JMO Compare that with the way the women responded in 2016 and 2018 after a crushing SLT loss. That's sports psychology at work.

NDSU down 5 with 5 minutes to go. This is embarrassing.

NDSU down 5 with 5 minutes to go. This is embarrassing. this does seem like it is a battle to determine who is the worst conference in college basketball. Please don't be us.

I'm sure our athletic department can use the extra 30k or so this year. Nice job!

Maybe not relevant here, but Nebraska had over 10,000 for their NIT opener against Butler. Makes Texas look sick and I like anything that makes Texas look bad.
