You'll never convince me he made this decision on his own. Someone contacted someone (AAU team coach?) to put a bug in his ear. All part of the basketball underworld anymore. Wonder if any "sponsorships" were involved?

The first fan of any team who complains about the lack of talent in the Summit League next season needs to be flogged. A coach could build a very competitive P5 team with the players that have left the Summit the past few years. I'm sure they do, but I hope SDSU fans truly appreciate that Mike Daum stayed. Says a lot about that kid.

Hard to respect this decision. I could completely understand someone giving the new coach a chance and finding it wasn't a good fit. That couldn't be further than what happened here. Umude went from averaging about 1 minute a game to 1st team all-conference under the new leadership.
Will not be cheering him on wherever he goes.

Add to that Lee’s comments throughout the season about how much Stan has to learn, and that we were “just scratching the surface” (paraphrased) with him. I hope he ends up in a situation where they will spend more time developing him. Otherwise he would have been better off staying. I’m guessing his destination will count on him being a finished product.

He's from Texas and it's reported Texas is interested. At the end of the day, he's a kid trying to make it as far in basketball as he can. If he can do that in his home state for a program like Texas, he's gonna do that 10 times out of 10. This situation is a little different than the Mooney situation but you can't fault the players for taking advantage of the system in place. Wish him well, but if it were me and none of those schools showed a lick of interest 2 years ago, I'd want to stick it to them. But that's just me.

USD gave them an opportunity when others would not. Once put on that stage they repay the program by abandoning their teammates. It reveals their true character.

When an offer is made on the same day a player enters the transfer portal, almost like the recruiting started before hand. H'mmm.

Yesterday KWSN had Jay Elsen on to talk about Umude and the transfers coming in. It's worth a listen. **** Jay said in the interview that Kanon Koster agreed to walk-on next year while he sits out, and will be a three-for three guy on scholarship after that. Basically what Freidel refused to do. I like the commitment! That gives Lee another schollie to give for next year (now has two). I'll assume we hear about another transfer or two soon.

It sucks to lose Umude. For those that are wondering if this is the new normal, I'd say that if we can get a little stability in coaching, we will see more stability in transfers. For example, if Smith stays we likely keep Mooney. If Otz had stayed, they likely would have kept DJJ and their big recruits. (at least until he left)
Lee didn't recruit Umude. Yes, he stuck around and got some very valuable coaching from him, but at the end of the day, I think guys that Lee brings in will be less likely to bail after they have some success. Keep the coach around, keep the recruits around. At least to a greater degree.

AAU basketball is turning a lot of players into mercenaries. AAU hoops is an absolute cesspool. Players learn nothing skillwise, but do learn that it's all about them all while the "programs" make a tidy profit. It's a nightmare for high school coaches too.

When an offer is made on the same day a player enters the transfer portal, almost like the recruiting started before hand. H'mmm. They're a P5 so they have nothing to worry about from the NCAA. Cal Poly, on the other hand, might have to forfeit a few more game for giving 20 some athletes too much in book money, anywhere from $5 to $175 too much. Stipend was a flat $800 per player, but some didn't spend that much on books and these cheaters used the extra money for other things like food. They should have attended North Carolina where they don't have to worry about books because there isn't a text for a fake class that never meets.

Company A (P5 school) overlooks you, you go to a smaller Company B (Mid-Major) and work hard to prove yourself, then company A sees your work and offers you a better opportunity. Mooney wanted to elevate his status to play professionally. Playing at Texas Tech gave him the opportunity to play in front of NBA and other professional scouts on a nightly basis. Matt is going to make a lot of money playing basketball after college now because of it. Would he still have had opportunities if he stayed in Vermillion? Yes, but he improved his stock immensely. Until the NCAA starts paying players and/or contracts become a thing, it's not going to change. It's the world we live in and it's no different between an average Joe and a college coach, so why should it be any different for a student-athlete?

My take: Stan only has 2 more years of basketball because of the wasted freshman year, so I don't fault the kid for leaving. I was really quite surprised when his name didn't pop up earlier - he would be scoring option # 2 or 3 behind Hags and sometimes Simpson, while knowing some other scoring/shooters were coming in that are "Lee's guys". Why spend one of your two years in that position where you still have to avoid an upset and win 3 in SF just to make the tourney? I don't like the system and AAU/shoe company influence, but I don't fault Stan in this scenario.
