Heard an unconfirmed but reliably sourced rumor this weekend that this will result in no pass out and re-entry at half time. Shutting it down because of beer sales in the Dome. Pretty much called that this would happen. Most reactions I get from people is they are not happy and the common belief is this is going to result in a lot of unhappy people. Fans will just leave at half and not return. If they want to enforce a closure of the parking lot people will just leave and head home/to the bar, not attend the game to begin with, or go to the tailgate and head home/to a bar and watch the game on TV from there. Pointless. Just so a few people can drink overpriced beer during the game. That would be disappointing but I believe it. I have always looked at the alcohol sales as a way to increase attendance but if they take away the reentry after half time, it's defeating the purpose. On the other hand, people that were more interested in drinking than watching the game were already leaving at half time. Will be interesting I guess.

I'll be disappointed to see the re-entry policy change, but am not surprised in the least bit. I had wondered if even the move to electronic tickets might change things. It's been a doomed policy for a while.
This would sell some extra beer, as well as general concessions. I haven't eaten inside the dome for years because I can grab a snack in the parking lot at halftime.

There are a ton of people that go outside at half, have a beer, grab a bite, BS at their tailgate, then head back in. A lot. I've talked to a few in my crew and got a mixed reaction. Nobody is happy about it. The mix is whether they'd leave at half knowing they can't get back in, and that is largely dependent on the score and how the team is playing. So we're heading back to the 1990's and playing in an empty Dome after halftime. This is going to be a bad policy.

the counter argument is how good of a fan are you if you skip the 2nd half of the game to go outside and bs and eat some cheetos. I had never even heard of re entry until going to games in vermillion. if you're on the west side, there is barely time to get to the parking lot and back anyway.

They are fans that buy tickets to get into the game. Go ahead and make policies that negatively effect ticket sales. The "true" fans will still be there, right. Boy, now I sound like someone that used to post here, debating fandom. Another place famous for re-entry into games is Iowa State football, you can re-enter anytime between kickoff and start of the 4th quarter. USD isn't the only place that allows re-entry.

Here’s what I would say. To many people have “sources” that say this or that. Often not true. Reserve criticism until that policy is official. If our policy has been open door then I don’t think we should mess with it. Let Herbster get a feel for what will happen if he indeed changes it. I trust David to do the right thing.
I know for a fact that the University of Iowa has a policy to let people in and out. I’m assuming it’s for everyone but maybe it’s just the donors that park beside Kinnick. That I don’t know for sure. And I’m not even a Hawkeye fan but have been down there with a group of friends where I witnessed it. In fact I went in and out. I’ll ask people at Iowa State what their policy is, I don’t know.
Let’s assume and hope we do the right thing whatever that is.

Everyone that I have talked to is happy about the alcohol sales at games. They say they were leaving at half to go drink, with intentions of coming back, but almost never made it back in. They are really happy that they will now just be able to grab a beer inside. They feel this is going to lead to them seeing a lot more 2nd halves this year.

Didn't know that about Iowa but that is another to add to the list. Iowa State is taken directly from their website and first hand knowledge. Nothing wrong with having a discussion and providing feedback at this point. In fact, before implementing policy changes feedback should be solicited to see how those changes would be received. We've heard from multiple sides in this thread already. There are a ton of people that go outside at half, have a beer, grab a bite, BS at their tailgate, then head back in. A lot. I just read that Clemson also has the re-admittance policy, but the article I read it in said it was rare in CFB. Also, it said Clemson has always had a hard time keeping the stadium full in the second half of some games. Just some food for thought.

I know I'm OLD and fashioned but I go to a fb game to enjoy watching the game. If I can have a beer fine but would still go if I couldn't. When I was a student (eons ago) I don't recall a lot of students leaving at half so I guess times have changed.

I think most that leave at half (and don't come back) aren't desperate for a drink, they're bored. Entertainment options have increased dramatically in the last 10, 20, 30, etc. years. There's a lot more competition for everyone's attention. If you aren't the type of person who likes spending 4 hours of your Saturday devoted to football then it is easy to find alternative entertainment at home.

This right here is the underlying issue that I don't think we can overcome. Putting on my old man hat for a second, but it's true. Kids these days aren't interested in sports like they used to be. I coached high school football up until a couple years ago and when you'd ask them on Saturday mornings at film what they were doing the rest of the day, the answer was never watching a game. The youth of today would rather watch someone else play video games on YouTube than watch a football game.

If re-entry is shut down, I know people will whine about it. But I won’t miss wasting a ton of time walking from the west side all the way to tailgate only to barely have time to finish a beer (or two) and high tailing it back to try to be back in time for kickoff. Hopefully people will just buy a beer inside and congregate and discuss without all the walking in/out. Kinda like we do at the SLT or any other event.
