Wasn't able to watch the game, but it looks like this was another absolute heartstopper for those who did. Very impressed this team was able to navigate another pitfall to come out 4-0. These first 4 games might have been the toughest stretch on the schedule given all the travel and quality of competition. Time to come back home, relax, and take an easy homestand against... *checks schedule*...Missouri and Missouri State. Alright, well at least they're both at home and there's time to rest up. FWIW, Missouri St. is playing Oregon St. (#7) for the preseason WNIT title on CBS Sports Network today at 3:30.

Missouri State knocked off Oklahoma by 6, Boise State by 3. They’re a really good team. Big and physical

80-69 was the final. Missouri State led at halftime. They might be a better team than Missouri. It might not be close either.

Do you realize that with the Utah win, our Yotes have won 4 home openers this year? Each team they played away was a home opener, usually marked by larger and more boisterous crowds. So this is a big accomplishment, especially against the caliber of teams that they were playing.

So this is a big accomplishment, especially against the caliber of teams that they were playing. We’ve also beaten two conference preseason favorites in GB and Drake. Both those teams will be guaranteed to have high RPI ratings.

That game kind of reminded me of the loss at wyoming a couple of years ago where nothing came easy. the officiating was bad as was the commentary from the utah announcers. it was funny how they said they finally had a chance to pronounce the name Kunnnnzer, then they got it wrong. it escapes me who but they were brutilizing another name as well. how many times was the video doing replays during live action missing key moments of live play. I’ll agree with you somewhat, especially on the replays and refs. I’ll add that the score sometimes wasn’t on the screen, or wasn’t updated. Super annoying. I wasn’t as annoyed with the announcers though. They did a pretty good job pronouncing our starters’ names (let’s face it, Ciara, Sjerven and Arens aren’t easy to get right without having looked at the liner notes). They added some color stuff about the Coyotes that had to be researched, like about all the Arens sisters, or our players’ free throw percentages. We don’t always get that level of respect. Hell, the fact that they pronounced “Coyotes” correctly was great. I also wouldn’t call them homers, either. I remember them talking about how poised the senior-laden Yotes were playing in OT, contrasted with the panic on the Utes side. I’ll take that over many terrible broadcasts I have heard in the past from opponents.

Re Sjerven:
She just needs to cut down on the fouls. She’s fouling people. A lot. (No, putting your hands over your head isn’t a free ticket to run into them.) And usually at least a couple of those are just bad decisions. She’s so disruptive that she’s always going to be in danger of foul trouble so she really needs to avoid the cheap ones. She’s picked up some really bad ones this season away from the basket that she just has to avoid.

I've seen her block a lot of shots flat footed straight up and down and get called for fouls a lot (I'm including last year). It seriously seems at times that the refs feel bad for the players she's guarding like it's not fair. If McKeever was doing the exact same thing she wouldn't get called for those fouls. I didn't see the fouls in Utah, so I can't comment on them.

I watched the Utah stream and a few of those calls were just horrible as the Utah player that she was guarding was dropping her shoulder and driving into her (as she stood flat footed with her hands straight up). Perhaps she just needs to learn to flop like you see so often on the mens side. The only other option that she had was to just back away and give up the layup.

She's averaging four fouls a game in 20 minutes a night. She's fouling too much. We can homer it up all we want but she needs to start moving her feet a little more and into better position.

I know exactly the kind of play you are talking about. So many times last year (especially State players) I would see girls just throw themselves into Sjerven and she would stand there and block their shot and they would get the foul call. She rarely jumps to attempt a shot block as she has the height advantage on about everyone she plays. And it's not like she's out on the perimeter guarding quick guards and she still has the four fouls a game in 20 minutes that were mentioned in another post. That tells me that she is definitely getting screwed.

I know Coach P specifically mentioned in the preseason about working with Sjerven on defending well without fouling. I don't know specifically what that entails, but I hope we get it figured out. With her frame and post presence, I'm sure taking her out with fouls is almost always part of our opponents' game plans. We just have to be better. It is what it is. On the plus side, if opponents are spending time game-planning how to remove Sjerven, that's just less time and attention they have towards stopping Duffy, or Arens, or Lamb, ... etc. Both in game-planning and in the game proper. Of course, I'd rather have her playing more than 20 minutes... I think Dawn will get it figured out. I'm actually more concerned with the number of points we have been giving up. Maybe that's just a function of the level of competition.
