This is an honest question, mainly because I don’t really follow the recruiting too much, but how many players do we have on the roster that were true HS recruits?

This is an honest question, mainly because I don’t really follow the recruiting too much, but how many players do we have on the roster that were true HS recruits? I count 8 out of 15, but two of them are walk-ons. The rest (7) are split between D-2 transfers and JC transfers. It’s all listed on the roster. Keep in mind that our international players are all “5 years to play 4” guys. So I consider them “true HS recruits” eligibility-wise. Sometimes those guys are listed as coming from a “collage” but that’s just because different countries call secondary education by different names. They are coming in as 18 or 19 year old kids.

KPH, Kamateros, Zizic, and Goodrick all came in as "true HS recruits". The only other player in this category with any minutes is Burchill, who has 20 minutes on the year. I think he is a walk on.
Walker, Cassoutt (walk on), and Kutcher are the other three. They appear to be true freshmen taking a redshirt this year. If I have my walk-ons straight, Walker and Kutcher hold the distinction of being the only two scholarship kids that Lee has gotten domestically out of high school.
Lee had insisted on going abroad for recruits but has one in the past two classes (Zizic). I can't tell if the pandemic torpedoed this strategy, or if he decided it wasn't working. Either way, he started looking at US high schools a few years late.

Former assistant coach Davidson was from Australia and had the international connections. Since he has went to Hawaii I would foresee the international recruits to be less.

I don't know if that's necessarily the whole story. Sure, Davidson had some contacts, but Lee has used international players everywhere he has coached. Especially from Australia. I'm pretty sure Lee has plenty of contacts with or without Davidson.

I'm all for getting HS kids from the local region, but at the end of the day, just field the most competitive team. JC, D-2, International or domestic. Whatever. Just get the best kids on the floor and win games. Of course you don't want an entire roster filled with 2-year transfers, but there is a place for them. I have zero problem with international players if they can ball. Some of our best players in both the men's and women's teams have been either transfers or international. Mooney, TBM, Seekamp, Trimboli, Fogg, etc. That's part of the game, now.
I think it's more about proportion and balance. I'd like to see more 4-year guys than 2-year guys, and I'm sure Lee would, too. I think he is working towards that. All the redshirts this year point in that direction, I think.

That is the whole problem though, these kids aren't balling as good as their Summit competition. I also could care less where the players are coming from but right now it is not working. The players are off the radar players, Lee was an off the radar coach. Everyone can judge for themselves how it is working right now and over the last few years.

I don’t necessarily disagree. Just commenting on the desire for a traditional program that never has to resort to recruiting transfers and international kids. For most mid-majors that just isn’t realistic anymore if you want to be competitive.

I agree that it would be nice to land more regional high school players and I think we will be. I am very excited to see Steven Kramer in red and white. He is a stud.
I also think we'd be judging our guys differently if we had AJ healthy. He just makes everyone better.

I think Kraemer will be a stud as well. I’m hopeful Kutcher who apparently is redshirting is a player. If you watched the sdsu and ndsu game last night even with AJ offensively we really aren’t close. We have several players who get minutes that you simply don’t have to guard. I feel like this is a turning point for our program and Lee knows he needs to build differently but what do I know.

I don't care where the recruits come from if the team wins. My suggestion was that switching recruiting strategies so dramatically so far along seems like a red flag. If local high school kids are going to be the target it seems like Lee would have been doing himself a big favor to have been building those recruiting connections from day 1 rather than focusing abroad so heavily.
I expect we are going to continue relying heavily on JUCO transfers for a while. We've had some quality players from the JUCO ranks, but depending on so many minutes from these guys isn't going to win us any titles.

Really not surprising as has been alluded to, but it is interesting to note that USD offered before the bunnies and was his first D1 offer. Seems like SDSU might have then felt the pressure to offer him which he immediately accepted. That right there tells he was a bunny fan to begin with. I heard recently that both USD's and SDSU's offers were for walk-on. Not sure how reliable the source is, so, ... take it with a grain of salt.
