No center scoreboard?! That is disappointing! If plans are not with full 360 degree seating and a center scoreboard, I'm not sure how it would outclass any arena in the region. Not what I was hoping for. I don't want to see an oversized gym! I hope this isn't the reality. Any other details?

Sayler had mentioned he wanted a lower ceiling and a louder - more closed-in environment for games. I really liked the design personally and if the renderings as drawn are actually built it will be a quality small Division 1 arena.

It has seating all the way around the court. If I remember right multiple scoreboards. It is pretty darn nice and built to be expanded but pretty compact at the same time.

IMHO those that want a low ceiling compact arena that is basically a noise box wants the Coyote to win first and want luxury as a second priority. Many that care more about luxury boxes, a center scoreboard, etc care more about luxury first and winning second. If the Yotes played in a dump and had success I would choose that over a great arena and a losing team. Of course we can have the both of best worlds but I am hoping winning is the #1 priority of all fans when thinking about what kind of arena to have. I will be the first to endorse an arena with a low ceiling if it meant side scoreboards which are just fine by me. If this thing is the South Dakota version of the Pit at the U of New Mexico than we are doing this thing the right way. If we are doing a smaller version of UNI than we are basically on the right track but not too much smaller since UNI seats only about 6 or 7K I believe. I hope we have a new, beautiful, modern, cracker jack of an arena. Something to be proud of and something to be loud in.

I looked at Arkansas Little Rock and hope that the seating angles are not set up like their arena. The high up seats are too far away from the court and not high enough. In the back row of their main section where alot of people would be sitting is simply too far off the court by the looks from the panorama. UNI has a better angle and every seat seems to be a good one in their facility. www.ualrtrojans.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=7400&ATCLID=1435835&KEY=&DB_OEM_ID=7400&DB_LANG=C&IN_SUBSCRIBER_CONTENT=The corn palace is a great example of what to NOT do. If you sit in the back row the seat is not very good, way off the court.

The arena will be dug down 3-4 foot lower than normal so the seats will have a steeper incline, and when you combine that with a lower roof, the. Arena has the possibility of being extremely loud.
Student section will be on one end on bleacher seats whi the rest of the arena will have chair back sitting.

Thanks for the details. Sounds great!
Coyotefan....I could care less about luxury boxes! Didn't know that center scoreboards equated to luxury boxes...shows you how much I know!
But I do know that a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity like this should not be left to mediocracy. Our outstanding and historically successful teams deserve the best that South Dakota can offer them! Despite some disadvantages in facility, our teams/coaches have overcome them and proved successful year after year. Time to pony up and return the favor!
My wife and I traveled to Normal, Illinois last season to watch the men's bb team play in a tournament. I loved their arena. It's way too big for our needs but the way it was designed and setup was great! 360 seating on two levels with steep angles for great views. Even from the second level you felt like you were right on the court. It too was built below ground so that main entry was actually around the upper section and you could access any section from a 360 exterior concourse. Even though it was never close to full it was a fantastic atmosphere!
This goes for the track teams as well! It's long overdue for our outstanding track & field teams. It's embarrassing that they have to host in Yankton! I would hope that no expense would be spared to create one of the best outdoor tracks in the region!
Thanks again for the details and dialogue.

Roman,
I didn't mean to say or point to you in particular that you cared about things like luxury boxes etc.
I think the point I was trying to make is that you take care of the important things first like everyone getting a seat that they feel like they are close to the action and secondly an arena that is really built for home court advantage. We will hopefully go from one of the most quiet arenas to hopefully one of the loudest. If common sense is sacrafised for luxury I don't like that. If luxury is added on as a tie-in than more power to it.

If you sit in the back row the seat is not very good, way off the court. Yeah, the UALR seats are too "flat" in a sense so I agree with that and the fact that the Corn Palace is awful. I am okay with no center scoreboard as long as there are ones on the side that are easily big enough to see.

I made a post in the football thread about the new arena that should actually be posted here. So since I don't have a clue how to move it ( seriously technology challenged individual ) I will give a summation of my tour yesterday of the new arena.
One word can sum it up..........AWESOME
The obvious place people are curious about is the arena/playing surface and seating around it. Needless to say a new floor always looks great. The seating is fantastic. I don't think there is one seat in the entire arena that I would consider not good. The far corners, top row, the view is amazing. You feel like you're close to the floor. The section for the donors that has an entertainment area underneath the arena seating with glass fronts looking out onto the floor is amazing. If you bring customers/clients to a game, it is a first class place to entertain them.
The ceiling is lower than most, but I think that's good, as the noise level will be a huge home court advantage. Because of the low ceiling, there won't be a center scoreboard hanging down, but I think there's a scoreboard in all four corners plus an "electronic ribbon" that runs round the perimeter of the facility. I have no issues with no center court scoreboard after seeing the rest of it. Access to seats is very fan friendly. Entry into the arena is awesome. Concessions are in all four corners with lot of room. Bathrooms everywhere. Color schemes are great. It's a wow.
There are also two practice courts inside the building that men's and women's basketball, along with volleyball will have to use. The locker rooms for the kids are nothing short of amazing. There is a meeting/film watching room that is tiered, and will seat 28 people in very comfortable chairs. It will also be used as the media room for post game interviews. The training facilities are simply mind blowing. Our athletes will have top drawer equipment and stations to take care of them.
The story of this facility outside of the floor itself is the weight room. Ho Lee Cow. Unbelievable. The equipment we will have to enhance is off the charts. I think the room is 7800 square feet if I remember correctly. The representative from the company providing us the equipment happened to be there, and I talked to him for about 10 minutes. He indicated to me, that our facilities would be superior to that of over half the power 5 conferences, and as good or better than anywhere else he could think of. I'm telling you, they are that good. Jevon Bowman did an excellent job in laying it out in a manner that allows our athletes to not only get stronger, but work on endurance, cardio, etc.
As I stated in the football thread, many times donors sort of feel obligated to make a donation or pledge because that's just the way it is. I will publicly state after seeing this arena yesterday, I am extremely proud to have made a pledge and be a part of something this special. I was blessed to play at USD several million moons ago, and I was fortunate enough to be able to make a pledge, and I am extremely glad I did. And if I can see fit to bump that amount up when they announce the plans to renovate the Dome, I will be first in line to do so. I have seen plans and schematics of that, and it's off the charts cool. What a great place to come to to watch or play sports. If you are capable of making a pledge that won't put you in a bad way financially simply because you also want to be part of something special, no matter what the amount, please consider doing so. It's literally fantastic. If you can't, please join the Howling Pack on an annual basis and buy season tickets. USD is on the verge of something very special.
If anybody has any questions about it, I'd be more than happy to answer them if if I can.
