www.summitmadness.com/This Oakland backer does a refreshing look at the Summit. SDSU slipped from 1st to 3rd on the basis of the ORU game. But overall, Jacks are much higher than Yotes. 64-19-4 in Brookings over the years + difference in teams' strengths and weakness, IMHO, Yotes will be returning to Vemillion with tails between legs after getting thumped.

I think USD could win but SDSU should win. They are at home, have a better record and have more players that have DI experience. It takes more time to build a DI men's team than I women's team. SDSU has a lot more to lose being able to go to the Summit League tourney so how will they handle the pressure? We'll see!

That was embarrassing! Wow! Embarrassing! I figured we would have to play well to keep it close, but we played terrible in the first half. Unacceptable! Losing is one thing but that was embarrassing!

Well this was embarrassing. From what I have heard and such, it seems like USD's perimeter defense was just awful, and the fact that they couldn't score, probably because the guard play for SDSU was so much better. Until USD learns how to play defense on the perimeter, which means a lot less Jordan Boots since he is definitely not a D-I player, then USD will continue to be at the bottom of the Summit League. You just can't get by without playing defense.
Plus the fact that Louie is not a point guard and it sounds like that hurt the offensive end because he couldn't get much going. I think it's time for Nimrod to start seeing more playing time at the 1 and move Louie to the 2 and play Westbrook, who looked like he had an awful game, to the 3. This season is a letdown, so time to see what Nimrod and Bos can do for USD.

Can't play zone against state--they chewed up the Yotes with 3s the first half and only shot 20% from the arc in the 2nd against man to man. That was the biggest single factor is the lop sided score.

Nagy was quoted as saying USD does the same stuff it did from when it played back in 2004, so Nagy had eight years to plan for the match-up zone ... doesn't hurt to change things, especially when the match-up zone had been a disaster in Division I.

SDSU and other schools have figured out how to beat the match up zone. It is time to switch it up a little since it is not working.

I attended the game last night and I was impressed with the behavior of both schools. I was at the women's game two years ago and I am glad that the USD students didn't scream out "Yotes" at the end of the National Anthem and everyone waited until the flag was off the court. The moment of silence for Governor Janklow was well done by everyone also.

Trying to avoid overreacting to last nights butt kickin, but have a few thoughts/questions?
Are we getting the pieces in place to be competetive come next season when we are eligible for the Summit League post season tournament?
Do we need to step up recruiting within the 4 state area? SD, NE, MN & IA Seems like that is the path the women's team at both USD and SDSU have followed. Also seems like the return to more area recruiting by SDSU men's coincides with their becoming a better team? Not that any body looked real great last night, but our 2 leading scorers were Krogman & Gruis (both local area products)
Will being fully transitioned allow us to do attract better recruits? The bottom end of our bench would struggle to be competitive in the top intramural league at the U.
How much does the lack of a facility hamper recruiting? On a side note, as my SDSU alum brother pointed out after watching the game on TV last night, the Yotes put up enough bricks last night to give us a good start on the exterior walls for a new arena.
Coaching
I have confidence the Yotes will get there and I believe we have the commitment from both President Abbott & our AD Sayler to do so. We as fans & alumni need to do our part both in improving and continuing to support the Yotes with our attendance and financial support.

This season is a letdown, so time to see what Nimrod and Bos can do for USD. That Boots kid is not good at all. The main issue regarding your guard play is that everyone is so short. Louie and Boots are maybe 5'11"-'6'? Guessing here. They aren't there yet and Nimrod isn't that tall either. SDSU starts 6'4 in Wolters and 6'5" with Carlson. And both are much better basketball players than those three. Side note: I was impressed with Westbrook's athletic ability. He is very quick off the dribble and can get off the floor very quickly. When he threw down that slam I was like WHOA! At times during the game he played very well, but he doesn't have a good enough shot to be that super dominant player. At least he didn't last night but I imagine he was trying to force some things. I still can't believe he applied for the draft last year though. Also, Gruis held his own against Dykstra and I was impressed. You could tell there was some friction there, but that's good. It brings out the best in them. I'd probably still take Dykstra just because he can shoot, but if SDSU could have both they would. I can't even imagine if SDSU would have had two scholarships available and Dykstra AND Gruis would have went to State. It would probably be uglier down south for you guys. Anyways, this game was about what I expected. I was guessing 25 points, but I didn't see it going that quickly. USD has a ways to go and they have a lot of work to do. They can start by putting Boots on the bench.

I was really impressed with Gruis. He held his own down low and might have been the best post on the court. SDSU had 2 posts that could rotate against him so he had his work cut out for him. I look at players like Twiet from NDSU and Gruis and think it's a shame that SDSU couldn't get them. I guess SDSU got Cordova and Dykstra instead so they didn't come up empty but there are players that you miss out on that are fun to watch. Blake Hoyer is another example but I'm sure every team misses here and there.
Westbrook is an athletic freak. That dunk was really impressive. I still think Matt Jones's dunk against NDSU in 2004 was the best I've seen in Frost but this one was right up there. I don't know what to think about his outside shot though. He hit a couple but not very many. I know you can't judge a player by one game though. I think he shoots better than Taevaunn Prince though. I'd make those 2 prove to me that they can hit the outside shot because they are sold at getting to the rim. I'm not comparing those to because Westbrook has a much better game but they both seem like they want to get to the basket and they play much better when they do.
The zone didn't do anything against SDSU. Their man to man was much better. I think that is the way I'd guard them in the dome. SDSU didn't have their starters in for the last 6+ minutes so who knows how their starters will turn out against USD's man to man but I think you'll see a lot of that the next time they play.

We seem to have a bunch of SDSU Fans telling you guys how good we are and how poor USD is. They are forgetting that SDSU has to come to Vermillion on Feb 9th less than a month away. They are also forgetting that we done UND in by 38 pts on Saturday Dec 9th and the following Thursday we went up their and lost to UND by 19 pts. I, personally, am wiery of our trip to Vermillion Feb 9th. What I saw of last night game on JumpTV, the USD game reminds me of UND that we saw in December. Without the crowd or with the USD crowd being pumped, SDSU will have an uphill battle on Feb 9th.

Maybe its time to move away from some of those Augsburg sets that worked all those years in the NCC. Seems like Boots came from Augsburg who had a real good mentor whose name escapes me but he also mentored Erv Entinger from NDSU and he got the same training. It just might be that Boots might decide to hang it up after all these years. Its getting complicated for him. I would not blame him if he does. He looked tired in the press conference. I am sure Nagy had to dig deep in his file drawer to find his Boots file. I dont think he has had a USD Match on his mind for some time.
