Regarding Will Powell, he is without a doubt an exceptional talent. I personally have told him more than once how much I appreciate him as a player. Congrats Will on your record. I hope you get a few more to solidify that record. You're a great young man.

I would have to agree with all of the posts out there now. JVM is a terrible qb and from what I understand he did the same thing as he did in college as he did in high school, look to see for a second if anyone was open then run that is exactly what Wes did when he was in college but the difference with him is that he played D2 which is pretty much like high school in today's game. He thinks that running the ball on 3rd and 8 then kicking the ball is a great idea. If Earl was in after the first game we would probably only have lost 2 games. I can't stand WB and he needs to go coach high school football somewhere and never look back, unfortunately for USD we will be stuck with a high school playbook until they fire that dumb ass and get a real OC! This is a plea to the head coach to bench JVM and fire coach Wes and get this program back to where it should be and not move backwards. Kevin Earl, I really hope you get to start the rest of this year and win us some games. TO WILL POWELL, YOU ARE THE MAN AND CONGRATS ON GETTING THE RECORD, DEFINITELY SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED IN THE FIRST GAME BUT UNFORTUNATELY YOU HAD A SHITTY QB TO GET YOU THE BALL! DO WORK THE REST OF THE YEAR AND MAKE IT SO NOBODY CAN TOUCH THAT RECORD! If you actually think getting a new QB and OC is the fix to all your problems you're clueless. Building a program doesn't happen overnight.

I haven't been a fan of JVM, but there's no need to take shots at him like that... I agree, Earl should get shot, but seriously -

If you actually think getting a new QB and OC is the fix to all your problems you're clueless. Building a program doesn't happen overnight. Of course it's not the fix to all of the problems but when the QB is as bad as JVM has been and Earl comes in and provides a spark, that would be a good fix. Also, the offense has been less than average for a couple of years now under Wes, so those seem like two things that need to be fixed.

According to John Thayer JVM will be the starter this weekend. My confidence in this coaching staff is about as low as I think it can get if they do not realize a change needs to happen. YSU will be the worst pass defense we face in the MVFC this year. May want to have a QB play that can accurately throw to give USD a shot.
Seriously - does anyone on this board think JVM is the best option at QB?

The BEST option? No.
But we hadn't seen Earl in a game until last week in mopup duty vs NDSU, and then we got a glimpse Saturday. We had no idea what kind of qb he was. Now we have a pretty good idea.

Just listened to the coaches show on the radio. I think Glenn is off. He said YSU is ranked 92nd in pass defense and top 10 in rush defense. After saying that he said he thinks YSU will be working hard on shoring up their pass defense for the game this week and we should expect a 7 man in the box front dropping 4. After watching USD what DC would be worried about USD's passing attack with JVM at QB? We will see a steady diet of 8 in the box - word is out - stop the run and contain JVM (keep him between the tackles) and USD will be three and out most series. I wanted to have faith in Glenn - if he puts JVM back in and we see the same result we have the last few weeks, that will be very disheartening. This fan has about had it - extremely embarrassing.
Go watch the replay of the game on ESPN3 and watch how the rest of the USD team responded when Earl got in. They stepped it up and visibly had a better intensity.

We may be in for a surprise on Saturday. Then again, maybe just wishful thinking on my part.

notkiotees - my guess is the post referenced by you comes from someone who has never set foot on the USD campus let alone in the Yotes locker room

notkiotees - my guess is the post referenced by you comes from someone who has never set foot on the USD campus let alone in the Yotes locker room I have heard there are some frustrations are going on and such. The post is right...Will should've gotten this TD a long time ago, and that could lead to some locker room stuff. The frustrations I have heard could just be general things with losing and such, but we shall see. Nothing has happened on the sidelines from what I know. Anyway, this has to be the do or die week for JVM.....even if he should be benched for this game. If JVM can't pass against Youngstown...who can he pass against? This week Glenn sounds like Rex Ryan sticking up for Sanchez....even though Earl is an actual QB and Tebow is not haha.

Unless the Dixie Chicks are playing defense, Earl's gotta play.

I can't blame a kid for playing if Glenn tells him he is starting. And I can't blame an asst coach, even one woefully under-exposed and under-experienced, for trying his hardest if he has been hired by the head man to do the job. I don't expect JVM to refuse to play, or WB to tender his resignation. But I do expect more out of Glenn.

Let's all remember that being the back-up QB is the easiest position on the team. Not being called upon until s*** really hits the fan. Then what? You fight or flea. You get thrown into a position where you have nothing to lose. I agree Earl stepped in and played a good game. Against the 2-Defense of Ind. St. mind you. What if he hadn't? Would we still be calling for a change at QB, perhaps looking further down the bench for some "miracle"? I don't think there would be all the bitching.
That being said, I think we can all agree that Earl needs to be more of a contributor on this squad. Now, I do NOT think we need to hastily throw him into the starting line-up after watching him play for 2 series against a second team defense.
My proposal, we use them both. We proceed with JVM as the starter but are not hesitant to put Earl in the game when we need to. Passing downs perhaps? 2-minute offense? It's obvious we have two very different styles of QB in JVM and Earl. Why not utilize the resources we have?
Thoughts?
