It is no secret that I like Ed, and I always will like Ed. That being said, I will always place the well being of USD above any and all friendships as long as everything is balanced. I think I know Ed pretty well, and if he stole, or had a tendency to steal, I certainly never had any knowledge about that. In a way, it's like learning your spouse has cheated on you, because if it is actually true, as a friend, you feel betrayed.
I had a very long conversation with for me AD Sayler awhile back, and these so called stories of Ed stealing university funds or camp funds was not mentioned, nor part of the reasoning he was let go. There were other antics associated with his behavior that gave him grounds to be dismissed. If you recall when Ed was fired, and there was definitely a split in ideas amongst the fans, the reason I was opposed to Ed's firing was because he wasn't given a job review, and a so called chance to correct what was wrong. Had he been given a review, and he kept doing whatever it was he did. Wrong over and over, well then Sayler had no choice. Again, that doesn't mean my friendship is over, it just means I support USD first.
At the end of the day, if you would say he had near perfect behavioral skills and conducted himself always with the best interest of USD in mind, then Ed shouldn't have been fired. On the surface, he was good for USD. He brought in athletic with skill sets we haven't seen the likes of before. He did raise a lot of money for his program. He knocked off Big Ten Minnesota, and he had placed players in the pros. The only so called hitch in his giddyup was losing so many games after big leads. That wasn't good, I agree. Unfortunately, that is a trend that has continued yet today with the new coach. However, that being said, I do think Coach Glenn will get the job done.
My point in this is I am embarrassed for him if it is all true. I tend not to want to believe all of it, but then again, there is an old say that says WHERE THERE IS SMOKE, THERE O'S FIRE. If he stole, he stole, and he should be fired. If he threw his weight around, then maybe a performance review gives him a second chance, maybe not. I don't know, I guess it depends on the severity of the so called crime. My bet is he took on someone he shouldn't have.
I like Ed, I always will. And unlike some others, I do believe he left USD better off than when he took the job. If he's guilty, I would even help pay for his rehab, because he probably needs it. If however, all this is overstated, and perhaps enhanced, then someone should pay as well.
We have two posters on here saying they have personal knowledge of him stealing. My issue with that is there were never charges or accusations made public. I'm not saying he didn't, I'm just saying it bothers me. I was twice in my life accused of something false that could have affected my life as I know it. It hurts, I know that.
And lastly, in my opinion Nidaros, Ed doesn't have a gambling problem. But then again, I didn't think he would ever steal.
