Cal Poly is very good at their option running game. Other than that I was more impressed with the UC Davis team I saw last year. I will credit Poly though as their sideline was real fired up compared to most that come into the dome.
I call it an even game. UC Davis needs to stop the option. USD was very good at home against the run and allowed quite a few yards especially to the pitch man on that triple option. Poly has an explosive back that definately need to be accounted for.

Just a bit more on the game. I am writing this point by request of a friend of mine that was bothered about something.
USD after getting out to a 14-0 lead went back into the all too familiar play "not to lose" attitude. If you subtract the Pick 6 for the defense USD was outscored 38-3 by the Cal Poly offense over basically the last 3 quarters of the game. What does that tell you right there. Once things start to not go so well USD tends to go into a shell. Meierkort is admittedly a conservative running style coach when it comes to offense.
After carefully considering everything I am on the "lets get a new coach mentality" more now than I have been for 6 years. After all we are D1, we are in the MVFC and still have a D2 coach that came from D3 in the first place.
I want to thank my good friend for pointing that out to me. As far as my own thoughts go, I am more invested into this athletic program from an emotional standpoint as ever. That is why I want to badly for success and want to badly for it to be ensured to happen to the greatest extent possible.

This is neither a defense of Coach Ed nor an indictment of the coordinators but as most folks know, Ed has very little to do with the way the game is called. He lets Wesley and Chuck do all of that. Ever see Ed with a headset on? So before we vilify Ed for everything that has gone on let's keep in mind the O coordinator is very young and the D coordinator just moved up about three levels. I'd say let's see about next year before creating a hateful website.

My point about tailgating being good and getting better is in relation to previous years. Most of the spots were filled yesterday and even some in the concrete lot. That's pretty good considering there were about 10 of us out there by ourselves just 3-4 years ago. The groups that I see tailgating out there now are regulars, there is a strong core of groups that are going to show up every weekend now. That can be built upon.
I have heard of the plans to upgrade the tailgate aarea. Next season we should have nice plush grass, and I hope they follow through on the plans to have a power source at each lot.

Ever see Ed with a headset on? So before we vilify Ed for everything that has gone on let's keep in mind the O coordinator is very young and the D coordinator just moved up about three levels. I'd say let's see about next year before creating a hateful website. What you are saying definately has merit. I don't know who is calling plays (I am assuming Wes for the most part) and how much Ed is telling Wes what to do. It has been my impression (and this may be right or wrong) that Wes has more of an attacking go down field mentality where-as Ed is more conservative in his approach. It certainly seems like when USD does go conservative they don't do very well. Ed may not call the plays but he can definately be influencing what Wes is doing either on the sidelines or all week in practice and film sessions. One thing to consider in all of this is that the coordinators have come and gone but the general character of the football team hasn't changed and has been on a spiral not going upwards for a few years now. My biggest problem is that USD has not proven able to put all aspects of their team together at once. If the offense is going well the defense is struggling and visa-versa. The kicking game still has problems although they are improving. Teams just have a characteristic. USD's characteristic is to not come up big and not do what it takes in big moments. Alot of Meierkort's success early in his tenure at USD may have come from an element of surprise in his first couple of years or maybe just out talenting many of the teams that USD played. Maybe he has some burnout, I don't know. USD certainly won't be out talenting team now-a-days. They will be even in the talent department for the most part. So the coaching becomes a bigger element to the equation. USD now will be moving to the Missouri Valley Football Conference which is generally a good conference from top to bottom, moreso than having one or two dominant teams always being serious threats to win it all. Because of that USD will find themselves in alot of tight games and in tight moments. Basically high pressure situations. USD is in a situation where they will need to be better in big game moments. That is probably the biggest weakness in the program. They will face adversity every week. If you want to point to the biggest different right now between USD and SDSU it's how the teams do in pressure packed situations and the general consistancy of play from week to week. USD has about 2 games a year where they would beat SDSU but another 7 or 8 where they would lose because of having too many things go wrong. The MVFC is also a very physically demanding defense and those types of games tend to really zap the energy from a team. USD has too many long lapses during games which will be costly. There is no doubt that USD has shown the upside to play well and beat almost anyone. Problem is they also have shown no doubt that they cannot keep momentum sustained for long periods of time in games and during long stretches of seasons either.

Yotes, Who do you like between UC Davis and Poly considering you have now played both? I think UC Davis has a solid and physical enough defense to keep the Cal Poly offense mostly in check. Your offense should have a field day, their pass defense is suspect. Score four TD's and you win the game in my opinion. I cannot see them scoring more than 24 on you. Overall I thought I would see a better Cal Poly team. OL and DL are avg. Skill players at RB were very quick as straight line runners - highlight in my opinion. QB was ok, but I understand we did not see their true starter there. WR seemed very lazy at times - probably helped our DB's know when a pass was coming - I could tell from the stands watching them take their first four to five steps as a run/pass key. Cal Poly was a good tackling team - except on special teams. If I was a betting man, I would say UC Davis by 10. I will be interested to see if other Yote fans agree or disagree with me on this. Should be a fun game. Just so you know as far as our pass defense was concerned, we had 2 three year starter out in the defensive secondary. We had a Rfr starting at safety for the first time and a true freshman playing as the 5th DB in the nickle. Both Asa Jackson and Greg Francis are expected back for Davis. How can you say our OL is average when they just put almost 400 yards rushing against your defense. Yes the RBs had good games, but that was because the O-line openned the holes for them. That being said, I expect a real good game with UC Davis.

Someone brought up the fact that Ed doesn't have a headset so he lets Chuck and Wes have complete control.
That is TOTALLY on Ed. Next time you watch a college football game, look for how many coaches are not wearing headsets.
Ed NEEDS to have that headset on to give his input, because it's too easy to pass the buck that way, but it also shows that he isn't capable of making the adjustments or even know what adjustments need to be made.
This is 2010, use the technology that is at your hands and use the freakin' head set. It's a VERY important part of the game. This isn't Wisconsin-Stout anymore. USD isn't playing St. Cloud State anymore.

Your scheme is solid, your OL are not anything special. Not a smack or personal slight to you. Just the way I see it in comparison to other OL's we have seen. I do not know if a single one of your OL would start for NDSU this year.

I don't really have an opinion one way or another about the O-line but they did a good job of at least keeping USD's initial penetration out of the backfield. Generally Midwest offensive lines are usually bigger and nastier than west coast O-Lines. I will defer to usdfbalum on that as it seems like he was focusing on the line a bit more than I may have been.

Most likely none of NDSU's OL would start for Cal Poly. Different offense that require different type of linemen. Cal Poly uses quick and athletic OL. Ones that open holes in opponents d-lines to the tune of 255 rushing yards a game. They perform very well in Cal Poly's offense. Also while we are talking lines, our d-line has not had a single RB rush for over 100 yards and they have racked up 21 sacks. I would say they are above average.

I was at the USD v Cal Poly game and then watched a recording of the game this morning. Your offensive line is ok - they got the job done, but they are far from dominant. I get what your OL is trying to do with their schemes - in fact NDSU used to run a scheme similar to yours very effectively and am well aware of stylistic differences. I think your OL is average (from what I saw this Saturday). Your DL is average (from what I saw Saturday). That is in comparison to the DL and OL I saw USD play this year. Good luck this year - just telling you what I saw. If you are looking for a pat on the back - go elsewhere. Congratulations on the win - your team is better than USD. That unfortunately does not make your OL and DL better than average this year. Looking forward to the game in SLO next year. Hopefully will be a good game.

We will just have to agree to disagree. I do not think Cal Poly's lines are dominant, but I do believe they are above average. It was many years ago, but I did play OL for Cal Poly so I guess I have can get a little defensive and maybe a little less than objective when it comes to them.

I think it is really hard to judge which line is better than any other particular line because so many factors come into play. Cal Poly runs a different offense than most so their lineman may have different talents and be asked to do slightly different things than a team like NDSU. The skill or the runningbacks and the ability of a quarterback to scramble out of trouble, have a quick release or be a quick decision maker can affect how a line is perceived. The skill of the D-Lineman that they are playing against makes an obvious huge different as well. Poly seems to be primarily a running team so they are going to be more effective at run blocking but perhaps less effective in pass blocking. Cal Poly also probably stresses smaller but more athletic lineman since they will likely be stretched out wide more often or have more linemen pulling. It's hard to judge lineman because of not only the teams they play on but also the teams they play against. There are way too many factors to say that one line is definately better than another because they may not even be judged on an even scale.
