Here were my thoughts on the game. Like everyone else, I agree the O-line was bad. We average over 300lbs and look like a bunch of soft hippos stuck in the sand. They need to play with power and some attitude and then the skill players can shine. Despite some freshman errors from Carson Camp, and there will be more, he is an exceptional talent who has good vision, incredible pocket awareness, and the ability to escape trouble, and finally an exceptional arm able to throw from many angles. There will be more rough times ahead, but keep surrounding him with talent and he might become one of the best ever. On defense, can we please stop arm tackling and allowing yardage after the first contact! DB's are playing well, LBs are playing below expectations and the d-line better improve or we will continue to get pushed around all year. The simple answer is if we win on the line of scrimmage we could be very good, but if we continue to be inconsistent, then expect another up and down average .500 season. Let's hope we get better! Go Yotes!

"Is that wrong?" Is that right? None of us know what the future holds for this kid. Your negative one liner implies you know more than the rest of us, and by not elaborating you come off as a jackass. Yeah, every kid out there gets multiple offers, and therefore can't attend every interested school. Why did you pick this specific kid to enlighten us of that fact? Wow, who could have imagined saying a kid is not coming here would get a reaction like this? If you are being serious I will tell you why. As for me being a jackass trust me sir I know way more than your ass. First of all he plays for one of the best Illinois HS teams in the state. He will get multiple offers from the BIG schools in Illinois. Second, USD has done NOTHING to attract big time talent in the last 5 years. I have read others threads and already “wait for next year” again. I know his coaches and I guarantee they laughed at the offer. Not because it's USD because that's how cocky they are. They will tell the kid where to go once he decides from his multiple offers he will receive. AND it won't be USD. Keep drinking the punch thinking that these coaches are going to change the program. Wait til next year. Go ahead and ask yorefbfan I he thinks this kid is coming here. I already know the answer. By the way, is arguing with you going to get me kicked off the site? It seems that if people have different opinions they get booted, just asking all might know it all. Wow don't often get called out like this but, what the heck I'll answer. I have no idea where this young man will go? I do know his dad and I will talk about it often before he decides and no school is off the table. He does have offers to many MAC schools and the entire armed forces. He might get more offers and some may be from Power 5 schools, but let's be clear this athlete or other quality athletes will never go to USD unless they get the offer first. I hope the coaching staff continues to go after kids that other schools are also going after who are quality kids looking for an opportunity. You may not get them all, but hopefully we continue to get a few. I'll continue to post offers when I see them to keep everyone informed and when an athlete commits I'll post that as well. Go Yotes!

Watched the entire game, still, some work to do on offense, need to be able to run better behind the hippos who need to do much better. Carson Camp is the real deal, plays with some attitude as well, great pocket presence, and able to throw from all kinds of angles. The defense woke up after a bad first quarter, but that prevent D at the end almost prevented us from winning.

I have been a contributor to this board since 2016 and have done my best to give an honest unbiased opinion as a fan and as a former high school football coach, but I have also been a parent of a player, Ben Klett. This week, Ben made a tough decision, with the loss of the fall season and his upcoming graduation in December, he listened to his body, and after playing football since he was 7, his body was hurting more than he wanted. He met with his coaches this week and concluded his career. I could not be more proud of him. I want to thank Coach Nielson and the staff, my son originally committed to him at WIU and liked what they wanted to build so much that he followed him here to USD. I have enjoyed every minute of watching him play and am very proud of all he accomplished, but most importantly, I am so proud that he will be earning his degree from this fantastic university. To be honest, I had never heard of USD prior to Ben committing here, but it is truly a hidden jewel in the middle of the country and the education he received is second to none. I am confident that Coach Nielson and his staff are building a championship team and be assured both Ben and I are looking forward to attending that final game of the season in Texas when USD wins a National Championship. I may still pop in and add a post occasionally, but I will always be watching a following the Yotes in football and in other sports as well. My son and my wife and I have made many lifelong friends and will miss all of the tailgating. Good luck this spring and in the future. GO YOTES!

Fall camp roster yet to be posted, but some more names have disappeared from the spring roster. #26 D’Andre Ferguson #51 Jacob Headlee #55 Jontrell Oliver #56 Conner Thiele #68 Cole Ernst #79 Spencer Gavin Headlee not super surprising after his dad was blowing off steam during NDSU game about hiw Bob should go back to Duluth and Sega too. Hunter is still on the roster. I’m a little bummed about Gavin. I remember hearing he was battling hard for the starting center spot last season, and hate to see us lose depth. I'm pretty sure Headlee graduated and is pursuing his degree in medicine. Can't blame him if he wants to be an MD.

If the issue is the fact that it has the same name as the slightly older and more famous Little Brown Jug,.. Just call it the "Roy C Davis Little Brown Jug". That's literally what is engraved on its side. Or: Davis Little Brown Jug Dakota Little Brown Jug Davis Trophy SD Corn Showdown Series LBJ Denny Sanford's LBJ Doritos LBJ Hell, call it Shirley for all I care. Just bring it back. BRING SHIRLEY HOME! The new slogan we should see all over SD! LOL

Great idea to put it on display in the SCSC Lobby. Maybe we need to get ElsenMidco to do an investigation into this conspiracy regarding the LBJ?? Jay is pretty good about toeing the company line if he is asked not to discuss something from the university, I think. I'm wildly speculating that there is a cover-up afoot, of course. Could be all in my imagination. If you really want a pot-stirrer, I'd talk to John Gaskins at KWSN. I think he'd be all over a story like this. I say stir the pot, let's get the LBJ back to USD!!!

As I was walking out of the SCSC tonight after the volleyball game, I was thinking how great the Little Brown Jug would look in a display case right there in the center of the lobby of the SCSC. Especially when we play the bunnies. #StigGiveItUp #GetYourJooseOutofOurTrophy Great idea to put it on display in the SCSC Lobby. Maybe we need to get ElsenMidco to do an investigation into this conspiracy regarding the LBJ??

So has anyone heard if the little brown jug has made it to campus? I would love to see a picture of the team with the jug, then have it proudly displayed as you enter the Coaches offices! Why was it not at the game???

"The Lost Season" should be the title for this year. There was a lot of promise before the season with so many returning players, a new D Coordinator with a positionless defence that could revolutionize the game, and many other things that gave so much promise and hope that the program had turned the corner and could establish USD Football in the top tier of the MVFC for years to come. Instead, we have seen a season of undisciplined football including mental mistakes, penalties, turnovers, a defense that can best be described as "Soft Butter", and many questionable personnel decisions that have resulted in players being released from the team or leaving the team. On the field, we may have seen some nice individual stats, but as a team, we have embarrassing loses.
As far as decisions regarding the coaching staff, I would hope Herbster will be ready to have some difficult discussions with Neilson and if the decision is to continue the relationship then I would hope there are some significant changes. None of the assistant coaches should have any level of job security as there is plenty of blame to go around. The amount of questionable decisions observed this year is staggering, from "interesting" play-calling and personnel decisions on offense, a "Soft Butter" defense that has given up staggering yardage both in the passing game and the running game, poor play on special teams (although with some personnel changes this did improve), and many questions regarding the development or use of depth on the roster. If the staff is relatively intact for next year, then I feel sorry for the many talented young men who committed to the program who will only get another year of unfulfilled promise.
While commenting on the post after each game may be cathartic for me and others it is becoming exhausting as well. We have 3 games left against 3 teams in the top tier of the MVFC and my expectations are very low. Since the season is truly lost, I would hope the team would concentrate on improvement, pride, and player development. In regards to player development, can anyone tell me who might be our next QB? While Simmons has put up some great numbers, let's be honest, his W/L record is not going to jump off the page in any record books. None of the 3 backup QBs who travel with the team (Tsagalis, Parks, or Moore) have seen any significant playing time other than mop-up play at the end of games. Is there any logic in getting all 3 of these players a few series of significant playing time over the course of the last three games to evaluate talent? While I don't want to just "mail it in" the last few games, we also have little else other than pride to play for, so why not take advantage and use this opportunity to evaluate these players. I could care less if Simmons breaks any individual records, I would rather see us move toward setting team records in wins. We seem to be able to rotate RBs and have even got the freshman, Theis, some carries during significant times in the game. Why not rotate the QBs some, even if that means we give up some continuity because let's face it, does it matter if we go 3-9, 4-8, 5-7, or an unlikely 6-6? Next year, we bring back almost all of our offense except a QB, I would think the opportunity to start evaluating our options would be a priority.
I will continue to be hopeful that we can become something more than we are, and I will make a few more games this season and will cheer hard for the boys and hopefully, we can end the year on a high note by upsetting our in-state rivals SDSU and creating renewed hope for the next season. I look forward to seeing what changes occur after "The Lost Season". Let's Go Yotes!

Depth?
Oct 22, 2019 4:44:30 GMT -6
Post by yotefbfan on Oct 22, 2019 4:44:30 GMT -6
I have kept some recent data myself and in 2016 we had 47 players join the team. Currently there are 20 players left and 3 have already graduated, Streveler, Brooks & Lewis. In 2017 we had 39 players join the team. There are 18 players left and 1 who graduated, Jennings. In 2018 we had 30 players join the team and currently 23 are still on the team. So what does this tell us about our depth? The USD coaching staff needed to bring in players and it looks like they took a lot of chances trying to find some diamonds in the rough. This means a lot of kids moved on as they either were not what the coaching staff was looking for or they found out that D1 football is more than they wanted. Each year we are bringing in less players which would tell me that our depth is improving. It is hard to compare with either XDSU team or other established teams with a history of success, because that success will bring in players all by itself. The process to build a winning program is difficult and hopefully we are getting closer each year. This is interesting stuff. It sounds like your take is that we are bringing in fewer, thus there must already be some depth there. Is your list able to determine how many peole came in and left 'on schedule' (graduation, injury retirement, ran out of eligibility, etc.) vs. leaving early/transferring somewhere else? Yes, my take is that since Coach Nielsen arrived he needed to bring in more players to help build the depth he wants. For 2019 he brought in another 31 players. It would appear that the fist two years of his tenure, the staff brought in many players that they were taking chances on hoping that they would work out. The last two years, as the roster has been getting deeper, they did not need to bring in that many players with that high risk/reward factor (Note: another factor is the amount of scholarships available each year). Now the question is how does this translate to wins on Saturdays? As far as the extensive information regarding why players left, my list is not that extensive, sorry, but that would be interesting to know.
