Thanks you. Did you happen to note who has taken over at left tackle? Joe Cotton

Does anyone know of a way to watch a replay of the game? I was out of town and was only able to catch the radio call. It’s archived on ESPN+

Coyote Football Alumni,
It’s been a challenging first two weeks of the season as we dropped our home opener to a good Montana team 31-17 and then lost again this past Saturday to a high-powered Oklahoma squad in front of 85,000 fans.
I was proud of the way our guys battled the Sooners and felt we played a highly competitive first half against what may well be the country’s best offensive football team. Down 21-0 late in the second quarter we drove the ball deep into Oklahoma territory only to fumble and turn the ball over. Oklahoma responded with a two-minute drive that made the score 28-0 at the half. Unfortunately, we started slow in the second half as an Austin Simmons interception was returned for a touchdown during our first series and Oklahoma added a big play score on its next possession. We moved the ball well in the third quarter, scoring touchdowns on back to back possessions to make the score 56-14 and had a third drive end with an interception in Oklahoma territory.
While the score was lopsided, our team showed improvement in many areas. Our offensive line continues to improve and Simmons had a good game going 25-34 for 250 yards passing yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, we showed flashes and were good at times but found difficulty getting Oklahoma’s offense off the field at critical times. Our kicking game continued to be solid, led by kicker Mason Lorber and punter Brady Schutt.
This week we return home to play Houston Baptist who is currently 1-1 on the year. The Huskies are a member of the Southland Conference (same league as Nicholls State and Sam Houston State who we played in 2017 national playoffs). They return 20 starters from their 2018 team and are led by one the league’s top quarterbacks. They are a tempo offensive team who will throw the ball 40 times per game.
We will need to show improved defensive play on the perimeter and be much more consistent offensively. We hope to regain the services of junior cornerback Mark Collins who missed the game Saturday due to injury.
Congratulations and thanks to the Coyote Brotherhood alumni group who raised over $39,000 during the month of August for football scholarships. What a tremendous response to the challenge and shows once again what a special place USD truly is.
Hope to see at the game in the Dome this week. Fight South Dakota.

Coyote Football Alumni,
We are just a little over one week into preseason camp and our preparation for the home opener versus Montana on August 31st. Practice has gotten off to a good start and we are seeing high-level competition at every position. Our emphasis during the first preseason week has been on technique improvement and scheme installation but we are already adding a lot of situational work and that will become an increasing portion of our practices over the next week.
Congratulations to Sr. Devalon Whitcomb, Jr. Mason Scheidegger, and Jr. Jack Cochrane who were elected to join seniors Austin Simmons and Darin Greenfield as captains for the 2019 season.
It has been fun to watch the continued progress of the Dome renovation project during the last month and it is really starting to take shape and look like a stadium again. The turf is scheduled to be down for practice on August 25th as we prepare for Montana that next week.
We will be holding an open practice for football alumni and season ticket holders on August 24th as part of a new Coyote Block Party event. Information for this event can be found on the website at Coyote Block Party.
I also want all alumni to be aware of a fundraising initiative being headed by the Coyote Brotherhood group. As of Monday night, they surpassed their second goal of $24,000! Once again, Coyote Family, we are amazed at everyone’s generosity! The new goal is to have 200 donors participate! Gifts of any size make a difference. More information on this initiative and the Coyote Brotherhood’s season-opening event can be found by visiting the Coyote Brotherhood Fundraiser webpage. All football alumni are being encouraged to join this group and participate in the fundraising challenge.
Thanks again for your support and see you on the 31st. Go Yotes!!!
Sincerely,

Coyote Football Alumni,
Summer is going fast and in one month, official practice will be starting. Summer training is going well with over 100 of our guys on campus working out in the weight room. August 2nd is our first day of official practice and our players will get a short break in late July before the start of fall camp.
Our 2020 recruiting is off to a great start and we had nearly 250 underclassmen on campus for camps in June and will have another 400 to 500 on campus in July. Our staff will be taking a few well deserved days off in early July and then we get back to the office for camps and to put final touches on our preparation for the 2019 season.
Our 2019 schedule is a great one starting off with the University of Montana at home on August 31st. Following our first-ever trip to Oklahoma the next week, we return home against Houston Baptist on September 14th. Our annual D-Days game will feature a Missouri Valley contest against Indiana State on October 5th and we will close the regular season at home against “State” on November 23rd. We will also be recognizing the 2005 Coyote football team that won the NCC championship on October 26th during our game with Southern Illinois. More information on that reunion event will be coming.
The DakotaDome renovation project has been in full swing now for several months and you can begin to see how the west side will look when completed. With limited seating for this fall, season ticket sales are approaching a record level so get your tickets now for 2019. We anticipate being able to access the Dome for practice beginning in mid-August until then we will be practicing on our new outdoor complex. Check out the Dome Renovation Live Feed on the website.
I hope your summer months are enjoyable and productive. Look forward another update as camp begins in August.

The USD web sites lists 17 on the roster. Which ones are not on scholarship? Isaiah Smith, Caden Hoffman, Kanon Koster for 1 year, not sure who the 4th would be. Either someone that we signed is not coming or someone taking a year witout a scholarship like Koster.

Dear Coyote Football Alumni,
Hope you had a great holiday break as it’s been back to full speed for our coaching staff. We will be out recruiting over the next two weeks prior to the second signing date on February 6th. We expect to sign another small group of student-athletes that will complete our 2019 class.
Over 85 returning players have started winter workouts with an emphasis on position specific training. Coach Clete McLeod and his strength staff are doing a great job of working with our team and focusing on the individual development of each player. The focus, energy, and enthusiasm have been outstanding. Our motto for the off-season is “No Excuses, WE WILL WIN” with the emphasis on doing what it takes for us to win a championship.
I am pleased to announce that we have hired Travis Johansen as our new defensive coordinator. Coach Johansen comes to us from Grand View University in Iowa where he has been the defensive coordinator since 2013. He was the defensive coordinator at Concordia University, St. Paul prior to Grand View. Coach Johansen brings an innovative defensive approach to our program and was recently featured in a Sport Illustrated future edition for his unique defensive thinking and schemes. His Grand View defenses have been nationally ranked in multiple categories every year and he has been a part of multiple national playoff berths and a national championship.
Finally, the beginning of the dome renovation process is upon us as all nonattached items are currently being moved from inside the Dome to allow for demolition and construction starting next month. Check out the following for Dome Renovation Updates.
It is truly an exciting time for Coyote Football and I hope you are making plans to join us for the 2019 home opener vs Montana on August 31st. Thanks again for your continued support.

Coyote Football Alumni,
It has been a challenging last five-week period that ended with a 17-12 win over Western Illinois on Saturday afternoon. Inconsistencies and mistakes at critical times had hurt us during our four-week losing stretch but our players have continued to work hard.
Saturday we overcame everything the game threw at us and played a much more complete game to beat the nationally ranked Leathernecks on Senior Day. I felt really good for our 13 seniors as many of them had their best games of the year including LB Alex Coker and DB Michael Fredrick.
Defensively, we put together a solid performance holding Western to 21 yards rushing and allowing no offensive touchdowns. Offensively, we were led by junior quarterback Austin Simmons who threw for 250 yards and rushed for another 50. Sophomore running back Kai Henry added another 75 yards rushing and a key fourth quarter touchdown that gave us a 17-6 lead. Sophomore punter Brady Schutt earned Missouri Valley Special Teams Player of the Week honors for his punting efforts on the day.
This week we head to Brookings for the last regular season game of the year. It will be a great opportunity for us to build on the momentum of Saturday’s win and put together a great football game against the in-state rival.
Keys will be our defense’s continued ability to stop the running game and we must create some turnovers and field position. Offensively, we need to be highly productive and take advantage of all scoring opportunities.
The weather conditions should be interesting as projected temperatures are showing to be in the low 20’s at kickoff.
While the year has had its disappointments, I couldn’t be more excited about the future of Coyote football. Our new outdoor practice complex is almost complete and will be fully available for use this spring.
The Dakota Dome renovation is scheduled to start right after the first of the year and the combination of those two projects will give us high quality facilities to recruit to and develop in. Recruiting for 2019 is going well and our staff will be heading out on the road immediately following the Thanksgiving holiday.
Thanks to all of you for your continued support and belief.

Dear Coyote Football Alumni,
We head into conference play this weekend on the road at Southern Illinois Saturday night.
Southern comes into the game with the same 1-2 record but as one of the leading offensive teams in the league. They feature a talented senior quarterback and running back to go along with an experienced group of receivers. We must rebound from our poor performance at Weber State two weeks ago and play a complete football game on Saturday night.
Defensively we were sound against Weber State allowing only one offensive touchdown but we found ourselves in several short field situations where Weber converted field goals. Offensively, we struggled to move the football. Turnovers and negative plays did not allow us to get any consistency going against a strong Weber State defense.
During the bye week, we have worked to address the issues that have hurt us over the first three weeks. It has also been good to see the return of several players to the practice field who missed the game at Weber or who have missed significant practice time over the past two weeks due to injury.
We must improve in the following areas:
Kicking game Punt Coverage – we have given up too many yards and too much field position in the punt game Offense Offensive Line – we have struggled in pass protection and in the our ability to establish a consistent ground game Defense – forcing more turnovers will be big this week just as it was against Kansas State Overall to win at Southern, it will take a great effort and we must play our best football. That’s what it will be in the Valley every week and that’s what makes the Missouri Valley conference great.
We return home the following week for our annual D-Days game against Missouri State. Hope to see you there as part of a packed Dakota Dome.

Dear Coyote Football Alumni,
Well we couldn’t quite finish the task Saturday night and lost a heartbreaking game at Kansas State 27-24. We took a 24-12 lead into the fourth quarter only to give up a punt return touchdown and a 60-yard drive that gave the Wildcats the lead with around 7 minutes to play. After forcing a fumble with just under a minute to play, we mounted a drive to the Kansas State 30 yard line only to stall and have our 50 yard game tying field goal attempt fall short as time expired.
Our guys played with great passion and our first game execution level was high giving us chances to win. I was truly proud of our effort, but we must continue to improve as we move forward with our challenging nonconference schedule. The K-State game saw 18 Coyotes play their first college football snaps and our young guys responded to the bell. CB Cam Tisdale played the majority of the second half for the injured Ike Armstead and OG and Kansas native Braden Schneider got his first start just to name a few.
Offensively we were led by QB Austin Simmons who threw for almost 300 yards and one touchdown. He also added a rushing touchdown and directed our offense to 17 first half points. Senior Alex Gray led the defense and scored a TD on an interception return that gave us the 24-12 halftime lead.
We failed to capitalize on two 3rd quarter scoring opportunities, missing a 47 yard field goal and losing the ball on downs at the Kansas State 35. Those points would prove to be important at the end.
The punt return energized K-State’s 50,000 plus fans and helped to shift the momentum that we could never quite get back. Check out the complete game story at Kansas State Game Story.
This week we host former NCC rival Northern Colorado in our home opener. We need to fill the Dome and create that same home field advantage that K-State had last week. We will work this week to improve in all three phases of the game. Thanks to all of you that made the trek to Manhattan, we had a great group of supporters there.
