Looks like there's a few miffed State fans out there, at least the ones who recognize the implications of this hire. Too soon to say, but Craig Smith may instantly be the top coach in the Summit. I think that is defiantly to soon to say that. Wait and see how he does after his 1st or 2nd year. Saul Phillips, Joe Scott, Jim Molinari, Scott Nagy are all proven head coach winners. Craig Smith could defiantly be apart of that group. Time will tell.

Nagy deserves to be on that list. He has 2 NCAA appearances and 1 regular season championship. You could say Wolters made that happen but somebody had to coach those teams. definitely*

Really? The comments I've read and heard from SDSU fans have been upbeat about the hire. We're optimistic about the hire contributing to the upward trajectory of the league which will someday get us an at-large bid to the dance. Compare Summit League women's basketball. We're close to being considered for a second entrant into the tourney and USD is a big factor. The USD women have traditionally been a good program and coach Williamson is making it better. If NDSU hadn't essentially killed its program, I think the SL would have gotten a second team in this year -- and that team would have been the regular-season champs. Guess who. SDSU fans are pleased to see what appears to be a great hire taking the reins at USD.

Ok...I love the hire too, but seriously? He hasn't coached a day for us yet. Pump the hyperbole brakes a couple times. There are some great coaches in this league. Comments like that are like comments from (some) State College fans about how Cody Larson was going to be the second coming...let's be smarter than that.

Pretty sure I'm preaching to the choir here, but JH has been killing it with USD coverage. Weekly chats, print articles, online articles, tweets, instagram, youtube. We are lucky to have him.

Agreed Cousin, let's be smarter than this too... (from Twitter) @stuwhitney With women's NCAA visit and men's hiring of Craig Smith, USD seems ready to legitimately engage SDSU in battle for state supremacy. Finally.

Stu Whitney lives for controversial comments. Drives me nuts. Someone should revoke his twitter account. Hes been down right rude about several topics, most recently the departure of James. Probably his job but really gets under my skin with it

As an aside, this is a response from an SDSU fan to Stu's tweet - just goes to show you can read everything two ways: Joe Schulte @joeschulte 9h @stuwhitney Why do you care so much about USD? I heard predictions that they were going to be so much better than SDSU this year. NOT

A couple comments on recruiting for context - he knows the upper Midwest, but also the following:
Robin Washut @robinwashut Craig Smith was lead recruiter for Nick Fuller, Nate Hawkins, Jacob Hammond and Tarin Smith. Also recruited Terran Petteway at CSU.
Nick Fuller (Wisc.) is going to be a RS Frosh. Nate Hawkins (Texas) played as a true freshman. Jacob Hammond (Oklahoma) is the first top 150 recruit for Nebraska in YEARS - 2014 recruit. Tarin Smith (N.J.) played for legendary coach Bob Hurley Sr. (yes, the father of Duke's Bobby Hurley) as his starting PG - 2014 recruit. Terran Petteway (Texas) lead the B1G in scoring this year.
In addition, he also has strong ties into Arizona.

I agree that Smith is a great hire but until he turns this ship around we should hold off placing him in the top tier of coaches in the league. S. Smith, S. Nagy, J. Scott, J. Molanari and S. Sutton (in no particular order) are solid coaches and have taken teams to the NCAA's. T. Jasik and D. Hanson appear to have their houses in order. Overall, TSL has some very solid coaches. I am happy to see USD has stepped up to join the fray.

Every new coach is going to sound good coming or they wouldn't be hired. The true test will be next November when he has to put his team on the court against other teams. Side note: My hope is that Craig Smith will bring in guys to play at USD who will play all 4 years at USD. In my opinion, it is hard to build good programs in the mid major programs being so reliant on JUCOs. The team chemistry just takes too long to build so we struggle at the first months of the season.

I did say it's too soon to say how great of a coach Smith will be for us, but I fully believe that it will take little time for him to shine above the rest in the Summit. I believe that, for the most part, that's what he'll do here. Perhaps a JUCO or two at the beginning to fill some holes, but then mostly high school seniors after that. That's what they did at Nebraska at least, three transfers that first year and then just high school seniors since.

We could go 30-0 and he'd have some snide remark about us not being that great.
