I agree that Smith is a great hire but until he turns this ship around we should hold off placing him in the top tier of coaches in the league. S. Smith, S. Nagy, J. Scott, J. Molanari and S. Sutton (in no particular order) are solid coaches and have taken teams to the NCAA's. T. Jasik and D. Hanson appear to have their houses in order. Overall, TSL has some very solid coaches. I am happy to see USD has stepped up to join the fray. 100% agree. Win first and then we can talk about how good of a coach he is. Every new coach is going to sound good coming or they wouldn't be hired. The true test will be next November when he has to put his team on the court against other teams. Side note: My hope is that Craig Smith will bring in guys to play at USD who will play all 4 years at USD. In my opinion, it is hard to build good programs in the mid major programs being so reliant on JUCOs. The team chemistry just takes too long to build so we struggle at the first months of the season. JUCOS are very important to any program. West Virginia brings in a ton of JUCOS. Baylors starting PG is a JUCO player. JUCO doesnt mean not good enough, its usually kids that need some help academically to get to the next level, and could be suffering from living in poorer circumstances at home. Yes you have to get the RIGHT JUCO guys but they can be a huge asset to every team. Cleanthony Early- D3 Juco Chris Jones- Louisville Dustin Hogue- Iowa St Kenny Cherry- Baylor The list goes on. Like I said you have to get the RIGHT Juco guys. They are great for plugging holes you may not be able to fill with 4 year guys.

I hope that Mick Garry reads this message board. That might be the best article he has ever written. It will be interesting to see if the Argus and Mick give the U a little bit more attention then in the past. He will be hard pressed to cover the Yotes as well as Terry V. covers the bunnies.

All of that and more, a well-thought piece from an experienced writer. I might just have to subscribe to the Argus Leader, well, no not really, but that was very good!

A few observations since the hire...
First of all for those that didn't think USD could land a good basketball coach because "they were USD" are sorely mistaken. USD is an attractive landing spot for an aspiring coach. Smith took a pay cut for this opportunity.
I have now listened to the press conference and 2 radio interviews today from Smith. There were a lot of things that make one very excited to have him now on board. What struck me and what I heard in all 3 instances was Smith's insistence that he wanted a dramatic improvement including a possible Summit League title and NCAA birth next year. I hear way too often fans and coaches not being very specific about wanting to win NOW. He wants to win NOW and in the future. Amy Williams is similar being that she said she wanted a championship team and/or wanted to win Championships. Not stating or believing in big goals is kind of by default a defeating personality. Both of these coaches GET IT. Everyone should share in those lofty goals and/or expectations.
There is one thing I think has become overrated as a result of this hire, Amy's hire and Joe Glenn's hire. That is that the South Dakota schools would be severely hampered by not being able to offer multi year contracts. I don't think this has hurt USD very much at all. Maybe sometime in the future it will but there are no real signs that it's a crutch as of late.
I am just giddy about the hiring of Craig Smith. He will make Joey James a distant memory in a very short period of time. This is the exact breathe of fresh air this program has needed for years.
Lastly I gotta give a major shoutout to David Herbster. I believe that I said in a PM that my opinion of him would begin to be shaped depending on how he handled the situation with James and the possibility of having a national search for a head coach. I think he hit a homerun with how he handled everything.
Things won't be easy from here on out but I think the days are gone of going into gyms and routinely losing by 20 points. What happened at the end of the year was simply unacceptable in how the last 3 games unfolded. SDSU losses a ton, NDSU losses a ton. Smith is coming on board in a year where the top of the Summit is there for the taking. Why can't the Yotes be that team to ascend to the top.

He knows exactly what it takes to win, and he wants to do it now. NDSU loses everyone, IPFW loses their top two guys (and I wouldn't be shocked to see their coach leave), SDSU loses a few starters, and Denver loses their top guy Udofia. Let's embrace that, perhaps not as lofty as it seems, goal of winning the Summit next year. Only four teams finished in front of us this year, and three of them are replacing a massive chunk of their talent. First step is to believe, and I believe that Craig Smith is the man to get the job done.

That's so awesome. Tim Miles is such a fantastic coach, and I love that we got his partner in crime. I've been watching Nebrasketball for a while, and those guys finally made it fun to watch. I'm so excited for Craig Smith to do the same thing here.

The author needs to think about his acronyms. It is GATA , not GETA. As in get after their asses.

Doesn't look like a bad guy to have.
Any word yet on whether or not Lloyd Williams will have a spot? I kind of figured giving him a job would be a requirement of whoever we brought in as head coach, but haven't heard anything on him yet.

Without knowing, I think it'd make sense for Craig to a) bring along one of his guys, he won't want to get going here all on his own, and b) to keep one of the current assistants, given USD returns so many players for 2014-15. I'd expect Lloyd to stay on in some capacity, wherever it is.

The head coach should have final say as to who is on his coaching staff regardless of what the adminstration has to say. He has to have a close working relationship and trust in his staff. That's why they have "their" guys.
I'm sure Mr. Williams could be taken care of with a position inside the athletic dept. There are plenty of things that need to be taken care of to make sure the department runs smoothly. If not coaching than maybe an adminstrative position is an option.
