The arrogance attributed to backers of USD in VJ Smith's "Howlers" essay is similar to the attitude exhibited by many SDSU message board posters towards resuming the State-U rivalry.

Nice dig.... kind of along the lines of if you want to work on the farm you go to SDSU - if you want to own the farm you go to USD. Yotemeal: Another example of what you and I have talked about and the essay "Howlers". Comments like the above may have been a little funny many years ago but they're pretty dumb now. Of course, the premise (SDSU grads don't own farms, they're only laborers on farms) is flat wrong and provably so. Reminds me of the dumb comments I heard people from Augustana make when I was at USD: suggesting USD grads would be working for Augustana grads. I haven't seen that happen. I didn't feel motivated enough to compose my thoughts again on this issue, so I tracked down a post I made awhile back on the SDSU board: "... I have very good friends who are very loyal SDSU supporters, and we're not afraid to engage in some friendly sparring. If one of my SDSU buddies calls me an ex-frat boy, pansy, liberal arts, greasy used car salesman, two-bit, blood-sucking ambulance chasing lawyer, a jest of which I’ve heard countless variations over happy hour, I’ll sarcastically ask that he refrain from stabbing me with his pitchfork, we cheers our beers, and then we go on talking about our mutual distaste for Nick Punto. Seriously. In this fantasy land of college sports fandom, the potshots, notwithstanding the tasteless antics of some students, are stupid and toothless. They don’t play in real life, at least not in my life. I don’t care to take the time to count how many times on this board USD is referenced as the needy little sibling or something to that effect. I think one could make an argument for arrogance there (in fact, I believe I have), but that’s just a bunch of message board BS. We should be pooling our resources to confront real problems, like Nick Punto."I stand by that statement, but I personally like a little piss and vinegar in a rivalry. At the end of the day, reasonable people recognize the value of both universities. I move that we move off this subject.

I agree it is time to move on. Barbs and friendly banter are best exchanged person to person among friends and family and not on a message board.
Add one more item to the New Years resolution list.
